Moon sign compatibility compares where the Moon sat when each of you was born. Astrologers read the Moon as your inner weather: what calms you, what you need when you are tired, and how you show care. Two people with a good Moon match are said to feel at home with each other. That is the idea. This guide gives you the idea, the old rules behind it, and one number no other page on this topic gives you.
Here is the number. Most free tools ask only for a date of birth. They then guess the hour, and the usual guess is noon. We measured what that guess does to couples. Over eight centuries of real Moon positions, it gives the wrong Moon match for 20.7 percent of couples. That is about one couple in five. The error is not rare, and it is not small. It can turn a “good” match into a “hard” one, or the other way round.
One more point before we start. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. Read what follows as a way to talk about needs and habits, not as a forecast.
What is moon sign compatibility?
In a birth chart, the Sun stands for your will and your public self. The Moon stands for the private self. It is the part of you that reacts before you think. Astrologers such as Liz Greene and Stephen Arroyo give the Moon a central place in their books on love and partners.
Moon sign compatibility is the simplest form of that idea. You take the Moon sign of each partner. You then ask how the two signs relate. Do they share an element? Are they two signs apart, four signs apart, or face to face across the wheel? Each answer has a traditional reading.
The roots are old. In book four of the Tetrabiblos, on marriage, the Greek astronomer Ptolemy looked at the Sun and Moon of both charts together. He wrote that unions last when these lights sit in harmony, which for him meant a trine or a sextile. A trine is a link between signs four apart. A sextile is a link between signs two apart. Modern Moon matching is a stripped-down version of that rule. It keeps the two Moons and drops the rest.

Why a birth date is not enough
The Moon moves fast. It crosses all twelve signs in about 27.3 days. So it changes sign every two and a quarter days on average. The Sun is slow by contrast. It changes sign twelve times a year.
That speed has a plain result. On many days, the Moon starts in one sign and ends in the next. We call these split days. A person born on a split day has two possible Moon signs. Only the clock can say which one is right.
How many days are split? We counted every Moon sign change from the year 1600 to the year 2400. There were 128,335 of them, spread over 292,194 days. No day held two changes. So 43.92 percent of all days are split. That matches the figure on our Moon in Sagittarius page, linked below. For the Sun, the same count gives about 3.3 percent of days, just the twelve days a year when it changes sign.
So a date alone pins down your Sun sign almost every time. It pins down your Moon sign on fewer than six days in ten.
What does a free tool do on a split day? It picks noon and reports the sign the Moon held at noon. Sometimes noon is right. Sometimes it is not. Across all birth moments from 1600 to 2400, the noon guess gives the wrong Moon sign 10.98 percent of the time. That is about one chart in nine. How many couples get the wrong Moon match
One wrong chart in nine sounds small. But a match needs two charts. If either one is wrong, the match is wrong. So we asked a simple question. Take two people born at random moments. Give each a noon chart. What share of couples see a Moon pair that differs from the real one?

Read the second row again. One couple in five who look up their Moon match from dates alone gets a different pair from the true one. Most of them do not know it. The tool shows a clean answer with no warning.
The third and fourth rows matter most. Nearly every Moon guide sorts matches by element or by distance. If the distance is wrong, the reading is wrong. Some couples told they have an easy trine in fact have a square. Some pairs filed under “clash” in fact share an element.
How we measured it
We used two separate routes. They share no code and no star tables.
Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. We found every Moon sign change from 1600 to 2400 to within a tenth of a second. We then walked through each local day, set at six hours behind Greenwich, like Chicago in winter. For each day we knew the sign at noon and the true sign at every moment. That gives an exact table of “true sign against noon sign,” with no random draws.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. We drew one million birth moments at random over the same eight centuries, with a standard, well-tested random number tool. For each moment we found the true Moon sign and the noon sign for that date.
The two routes agree to the second decimal place. The noon error came out at 10.98 and 10.99 percent. The wrong-pair rate came out at 20.71 and 20.72 percent. We then paired partners at random, which is the fair base line. Real couples are not random, but nothing in the birth data ties a person’s Moon to their partner’s.
What moon signs go well together?
Tradition answers with the four elements. Fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn. Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces.
The usual reading runs like this. Two Moons of the same element speak the same language. Fire pairs well with Air, since air feeds a flame. Earth pairs well with Water, since water makes soil rich. The other mixes, such as Fire with Water, are said to need more work.
Here is how those groups split up across all couples. Each Moon sign holds almost exactly one twelfth of all moments, from 8.33 to 8.34 percent on our long count. So the shares below come from simple counting, and they are the same for every era.

So half of all couples land in the “harder” group by design. That is not bad news. It only shows how much weight the old grid puts on a single rule.
Moon sign compatibility chart
The element grid is one lens. The distance between the two Moons is another. Count the signs from one Moon to the other around the wheel. The count sets the aspect, which is the old word for the angle between two points.

Ptolemy counted only the sextile and the trine as harmony. The square and the opposition were hard for him. He did not use the semi-sextile or the quincunx at all. Those two came much later.
Keep the first section in mind as you read this chart. On noon charts, one couple in five sits in the wrong row.
Do soulmates have matching moon signs?
Some do, by pure chance. One couple in twelve shares a Moon sign. That is 8.33 percent, from both of our routes. Any two strangers on a bus share a Moon sign at the same rate.
Has anyone checked whether couples share Moon signs more than chance? The best test of love signs used the Sun, not the Moon. In 2007 the sociologist David Voas looked at the 2001 census of England and Wales. He studied more than ten million married couples. He found no link at all between Sun signs and who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples turned out to be a data entry error. A census gives dates but no birth times, so no one can run the same test on Moons. That tells you something too. The data that could settle it does not exist at that scale.
So a shared Moon sign is a nice detail, not a sign of fate. Our Cancer and Cancer page shows a neat case. Two Cancers share the Moon as ruler, yet their own Moons match only one time in twelve.

These dignities, home, exaltation, detriment and fall, come from Ptolemy and from William Lilly’s Christian Astrology of 1647. They rate the Moon’s comfort in a sign. They say nothing about whether two people get along.

Sun and moon sign compatibility
Many people search for the Sun and Moon together. That is closer to what Ptolemy meant. He did not compare Moon with Moon alone. He looked at the Sun and Moon of one chart against the Sun and Moon of the other.
Modern synastry, the craft of comparing two charts, keeps that cross check. A classic tie is one partner’s Moon in the same sign as the other’s Sun. It is read as a feeling of being understood. You can check it with a date alone for the Sun, but you still need a birth time to be sure of the Moon.

Vedic moon sign compatibility
Indian astrology puts the Moon at the center of matching. The Vedic system uses a different zodiac, tied to the stars rather than the seasons. The gap between the two zodiacs grows by about one degree every 72 years. In 2000 it stood at 23.86 degrees, by the common Lahiri measure.
That gap moves most Moons back one sign. With a gap near 24 degrees out of 30, about four charts in five get a different Moon sign in the Vedic system. So a Western Moon match and a Vedic Moon match are two separate tests. Do not mix their results.
How to find your real Moon sign
Start with the time on your birth certificate. In the United States, the long-form certificate lists it in most states. A parent’s memory within an hour or so is fine on most days.
If you have no time at all, check whether your birth date was a split day. If the Moon stayed in one sign from midnight to midnight, your Moon sign is safe. If it changed sign that day, you have two candidates. Read both. The one that sounds like you is a guess, not proof, but at least you know the doubt is there.
Then do the same for your partner. Only when both Moons are sure does the match mean what the chart says.

Moon sign compatibility FAQ
What moon signs go well together?
Tradition favors Moons in the same element, Fire with Air, and Earth with Water. By distance, the trine and the sextile are the classic good links. Half of all couples land in one of the easy element groups by chance alone.
Can I find moon sign compatibility by date of birth?
Only in part. The Moon changes sign on 43.92 percent of days. On those days a date gives two possible Moon signs. With noon charts for both partners, about one couple in five gets the wrong Moon pair.
Do soulmates have matching moon signs?
One couple in twelve shares a Moon sign by chance. No study has shown that couples share Moon signs more than that. The large census test by David Voas found no Sun sign effect on marriage at all.
What is the hardest Moon sign to have?
By the old rules, the Moon is weakest in Capricorn, its detriment, and in Scorpio, its fall. That is a statement about the Moon’s comfort, not about the person. Many people with these Moons feel deeply and care well.
Is moon sign compatibility more important than sun sign compatibility?
Many modern astrologers think so, since the Moon speaks to daily needs. Ptolemy looked at both lights together. Neither has been shown to predict how a couple does, so use both as prompts for a talk, not as a verdict.
Is Vedic moon sign compatibility the same as Western?
No. The Vedic zodiac sits about 24 degrees behind the Western one today. About four charts in five get a different Moon sign, so the two systems can give different matches for the same couple.
