A Moon sign in plain words
Your Moon sign is the part of the sky the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your private self. It is the part of you that reacts before you think. It shows what calms you and how you look after the people you love.

Two Moons with no rank
Tradition gives each planet four special signs. The home is where the planet rules. The exaltation is where it is an honored guest. The exile sits opposite the home, and the fall sits opposite the exaltation. For the Moon, the home is Cancer and the exaltation is Taurus. Its exile is Capricorn, and its fall is Scorpio.
Virgo and Pisces are none of these. A planet with no rank in a sign is called peregrine, from a Latin word for a traveler. It gets no extra help, but it is not damaged. So neither partner starts from a hard seat. Both Moons are plain guests.
When a Moon has no rank, astrologers look to the planet that rules its sign. They call that planet the dispositor, the host who takes the Moon in. The Virgo Moon’s host is Mercury. The Pisces Moon’s host is Jupiter. That is where this pair gets its shape.
Each ruler is in exile across the axis
Mercury owns two signs, Gemini and Virgo. Jupiter owns two as well, Sagittarius and Pisces. A planet’s exile is the sign opposite its home. So Mercury is in exile in Pisces, and Jupiter is in exile in Virgo. William Lilly lists both in his Christian Astrology of 1647.
Read as a symbol, this is the core of the pair. The Virgo Moon hands its moods to Mercury, the planet of words, lists, and fine detail. Mercury would be lost in Pisces, where lines blur. The Pisces Moon hands its moods to Jupiter, the planet of faith and wide views. Jupiter would feel cramped in Virgo, where every detail counts.
So each partner’s inner host would feel like a stranger in the other’s world. That is not a verdict. It is a map of where the two will talk past each other. The Virgo Moon asks, “What exactly is wrong?” The Pisces Moon answers, “It is a feeling, not a fact.”
The same axis holds a second trade. In Ptolemy’s list of exaltations, Mercury is exalted in Virgo and Venus in Pisces. Their falls sit opposite, so Mercury falls in Pisces and Venus falls in Virgo. Mercury, the planet of sorting, rises on one side. Venus, the planet of softness, rises on the other.

The Pisces Moon: the one who absorbs
Pisces is a water sign, and mutable too. A Pisces Moon feels the mood of a room before anyone speaks. It shows love through presence, comfort, and forgiveness. In a couple, a Pisces Moon wants to be felt, not solved. A list of fixes can land as a sign that nobody listened. It feels safe when the other person simply stays.
What the opposition does
An opposition joins two signs that face each other. In Book 1 of the Tetrabiblos, the Greek astronomer Ptolemy calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. He calls the square and the opposition disharmonious. Modern writers read the opposition as a pull between two poles that need each other.
For this pair, the poles are clear. Virgo holds the detail, and Pisces holds the whole. Earth gives water a shape, and water keeps earth from cracking. Both signs are night signs, which Ptolemy calls feminine. So both Moons sit in signs of their own kind. Neither one needs to act out a mood in public.
Both signs are also mutable. That helps. Neither partner digs in on principle. The risk is the reverse. Two mutable Moons can both bend so much that no one decides. The Virgo Moon frets. The Pisces Moon floats. The dishes and the feelings both wait.

Is the opposition exact?
An opposition by sign is not always an opposition by degree. A Moon at 1 degree of Virgo and a Moon at 29 degrees of Pisces are six signs apart. Yet the real gap is 152 degrees, not 180. Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle, called an orb.

These values hold for every Moon pair, because the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. So with an 8 degree orb, fewer than half of Virgo Moon and Pisces Moon couples have an exact opposition. Unlike some pairs, this one never slips into a different major angle across the sign line. When the gap is not near 180 degrees, it is simply a wide opposition.
Ptolemy also names two quieter ties between signs. Some signs “command and obey”, and some “behold” each other. Virgo and Pisces share neither tie, on any reading. The opposition is the whole of their classical link.
New moons and full moons meet in the same two months
Here is a small pattern that is real. A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.
For an opposite pair like this one, the Sun signs are the same on both sides. A Virgo Moon is a new moon birth under a Virgo Sun, and a full moon birth under a Pisces Sun. A Pisces Moon is the reverse.

The gap comes from the Sun’s speed. The Sun moves slowest in the northern summer, so it stays in Virgo a little longer than in Pisces. That gives the Moon more days to meet it or face it while the Sun is in Virgo.

How common is a Virgo Moon and Pisces Moon couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank the Moon pairs. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.
Check your Moons before you read on
The Moon moves fast. It stays in one sign for about 54.6 hours on average, and between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. So on 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour. A person born on such a day has two possible Moon signs.
Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. Two noon charts give the wrong Moon pair to 20.75 percent of couples, about one couple in five. Only about 31 percent of couples have both Moons fixed by the date alone. A Virgo Moon born late in the day could be a Libra Moon. A Pisces Moon born early could be an Aquarius Moon.
How we measured
We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. It then summed the time, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
What the research says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.
So the exiled rulers are not a warning, and the opposition is not a promise. They are symbols. A Virgo Moon and a Pisces Moon both care deeply and quietly. One sorts the feeling, and one holds it. The symbols point to where each one needs to learn the other’s language.
