Gemini Moon and Sagittarius Moon compatibility is a meeting of two ends of one line. The signs sit straight across the wheel from each other, an angle called an opposition. Ptolemy counted it as a hard angle. Yet the two signs share more than most opposite pairs do.
We found one more tie in the sky itself. The Gemini Moon is born near a new moon more than almost any other Moon. The Sagittarius Moon is born near a full moon more than almost any other. In both extra cases, the Sun sits in the same place: Gemini.

A word on what this is
Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. The largest test of love signs came from the sociologist David Voas in 2007. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales, with 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom.
A census holds no birth times, so no one has run that test on Moon signs. Treat this page as a map of old ideas and real sky facts. It can start a talk. It cannot score a couple.
Two Moons, two ways to calm down

So one Moon looks close, at the facts in front of it. The other looks far, at what the facts mean. That is the old story of this axis.
The opposition, in Ptolemy’s terms
To compare two Moons, astrologers count the signs between them. Gemini and Sagittarius sit six signs apart, the widest gap there is.
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 13, he sorts the angles into two groups. The trine and the sextile are harmonious. The square and the opposition are not. So by the plain rule, these two Moons pull against each other.
He gives two more kinds of link in the next chapters. Signs at the same distance from the start of Aries rise in equal time, and one commands the other. Signs at the same distance from the start of Cancer share the same length of day, and they behold each other. Gemini and Sagittarius fit neither rule. Their only tie is the opposition itself.
Opposite, but built alike
Every opposition joins two signs of the same polarity. Polarity is the old split of the signs into active and receptive. Gemini and Sagittarius are both active signs. That much is true of every pair across the wheel.
This pair shares more. Air and fire are friendly elements in the tradition, since air feeds a flame. And both signs are mutable. A mutable sign closes a season and adapts to change. Among all 78 Moon pairs, this is the only opposition between an air sign and a fire sign that are both mutable.
So the two Moons move at a similar speed. Both like change. Both get bored by a fixed routine. What differs is the scale. Gemini wants a new fact. Sagittarius wants a new horizon.
The two rulers
Mercury rules Gemini and Jupiter rules Sagittarius. Ptolemy gives each planet a nature. Mercury is quick, mixed and fond of detail. Jupiter is warm, broad and fond of meaning. In Book 1, chapter 17, the two planets rule the opposite signs of each other. Mercury’s other sign, Virgo, sits across from Pisces, Jupiter’s other sign.
The Moon has no major rank in either sign. It is not at home, exalted, in exile or in fall. So neither Moon starts with a traditional edge.
What we measured: a Sun in Gemini
A person born near a new moon has the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. A person born near a full moon has the Moon in the sign across from the Sun. For each Moon sign, both shares sit close to 8.3 percent. They are not equal, and the gaps are real.

Read the table from corner to corner. The Gemini Moon’s top case has the Sun in Gemini. The Sagittarius Moon’s top case has the Sun in Gemini too. Both Moons lean toward the same Sun.
The cause is the Earth’s path. The Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July, so the Sun moves slowest in the weeks around that date. It crosses Gemini from late May to late June, one of its slow stretches. The longer the Sun stays in a sign, the more Moons pass there or across from it.
In early winter, the reverse holds. The Sun moves faster through Sagittarius. So a Gemini Moon faces a Sagittarius Sun less than most Moons face their opposite. A Sagittarius Moon shares its sign with the Sun less than most Moons do.
What it means for the couple
The two leans cancel out. In 15.74 percent of these couples, at least one partner has Moon and Sun in the same sign. In 15.72 percent, at least one partner was born near a full moon. That is almost a tie.
So the fact tells you about each Moon, not about the pair. Tradition reads a new moon birth as need and will pulling the same way. It reads a full moon birth as the two pulling apart. Our guide to moon phase compatibility shows how to find your own phase.
How close is the opposition in degrees?
An opposition by sign is not always 180 degrees in the sky. Each Moon can sit anywhere in its sign. Astrologers allow a margin around the exact angle, called an orb.

Those shares hold for every Moon pair, since they come from geometry. One thing sets this pair apart from its neighbors. No other major angle can form across a sign line here. The gap between the two Moons runs from 150 to 210 degrees. That range never reaches a trine or a square. So every couple in this pair has an opposition or nothing.
The pair in daily life
Picture a bad week. The Gemini Moon wants to talk it out, piece by piece, with every detail. The Sagittarius Moon wants to step back, get out of the house, and find the lesson. Each thinks the other has missed the point.
To the Sagittarius Moon, the details can feel like going in circles. To the Gemini Moon, the big lesson can feel like a feeling skipped. Both are right about something. The facts matter, and so does the meaning.
The shared ground is real. Both Moons like to learn. Both prefer a light mood to a heavy one. Both need freedom. A trip, a class or a long talk on a walk suits them both.
First, check both Moons
A reading needs two correct Moon signs. The Moon stays in a sign for 54.6 hours on average, and changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. A birth on such a day has two possible Moons.
Tools with no birth time use noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign in 10.98 percent of charts. For a couple, it gives the wrong pair in about 1 case in 5. Only 31 percent of couples have both Moons fixed by their dates alone. Our pivot page on Moon sign compatibility gives the full count.
A Gemini Moon near a sign change might be a Taurus or Cancer Moon. A Sagittarius Moon might be a Scorpio or Capricorn Moon. The birth time settles it.

How we measured
We used two separate routes over the years 1600 to 2400, with all moments weighted the same. Route one used the astronomy-engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun to within a tenth of a second, then added up the exact time in each case. Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris and checked the sky once an hour, on a grid shifted by half an hour. The two routes agree to within 0.05 points.
