Your birthday tells you the Sun was in Sagittarius. It does not tell you where that Sun sat in your chart, or whether it was even up in the sky. In the United States, it usually was not.
I counted it. Six Sagittarius Suns in ten born in the US arrive with the Sun below the horizon. That makes most of them night births, in a sign the old books gave to Jupiter as its day home. This page is about that gap, and about what the hour of birth does to a Sun in this sign.

Here we treat the Sun as one piece of a chart, not as a label. Only about twelve in a hundred match the stereotype, as the computed data on the Sagittarius woman shows.
Why a December birthday is usually a night birth
The Sun moves through Sagittarius from about November 22 to December 21. Those are the last four weeks before the winter solstice, the day the Sun sits lowest in the northern sky.
Take New York on December 5, 2026. The Sun rises at 7:04 am and sets at 4:28 pm. That is 9.4 hours of daylight and 14.6 hours of dark. On June 21 the same city gets 15.1 hours of daylight.
The height of the Sun tells the same story. At noon on December 5, the Sun stands 26.9 degrees above the New York skyline. At noon on June 21, it stands at 72.7 degrees. A Sagittarius Sun is a low Sun, and a low Sun spends more of each day under the ground.
Astronomers call the north-south position of the Sun its declination. During this season it runs from about 20 degrees south of the sky’s equator to 23.4 degrees south. For anyone north of the equator, that means short days.
Six in ten: the count, place by place
A birth chart is a map of the sky at the minute you were born. Think of it as a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one part of life, and the planets are the furniture.
The ancient astrologers split every chart into two kinds. A day chart has the Sun above the horizon at birth. A night chart has it below. They called this split the sect of the chart. It is one of the first things a Hellenistic astrologer checked. The Hellenistic tradition is the Greek-speaking school, from about 100 BC to 600 AD, where Western astrology begins.
So here is the plain question. Of all the people born with the Sun in Sagittarius, how many were born by day? I counted births in every city with 100,000 people or more, weighted by size, across 1900 to 2100.

The pattern follows the map. The farther north the city, the longer the December night, and the fewer day births. In London or Dublin, two Sagittarius Suns in three are born at night. South of the equator, the season is summer, and the count flips.
Where Sagittarius sits among the twelve Sun signs
Every sign gets its own share of day births, because every sign falls in its own part of the year. Here is the full list for US births, from the most day births to the fewest.

Sagittarius and Capricorn share the bottom of the list. The winter solstice sits right between them, so they mirror each other. The gap between the two is a fraction of a point, too small to call. Cancer and Gemini sit at the top, on either side of the summer solstice. A US Gemini Sun is about half again as likely as a Sagittarius Sun to be born by day.
Why this matters more for Sagittarius than for most signs
In the old scheme, each planet belongs to a team. The Sun leads the day team, with Jupiter and Saturn. The Moon leads the night team, with Venus and Mars. A planet on the team of the chart is said to be in sect, which means working on home ground.
Jupiter is the planet that rules Sagittarius. Claudius Ptolemy, writing the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD, gave each planet two signs. One sits on the side of the Sun and one on the side of the Moon. Jupiter’s solar sign is Sagittarius. Its lunar sign is Pisces.
So Sagittarius is Jupiter’s day house, and the Sun in it belongs to the day team. Yet in the US, six of these Suns in ten are born at night. The sign is built for daylight, and most of its natives arrive in the dark.
What does the tradition make of that? In a day chart, Jupiter is the benefic of the sect. A benefic is a planet the old writers read as helpful. In a night chart that role passes to Venus, and Jupiter still helps, but from the bench. Vettius Valens, who worked through real charts in his Anthologies in the second century, used this split all through his work.

For a Sagittarius Sun, the upshot is simple. A day-born Archer has its Sun and its ruler on the same team as the chart. A night-born Archer has the Moon in charge, and the ruler of the Sun sign plays for the other side. That is the common case, not the odd one.
None of this is a law of nature. Astrology is not a science. These are the readings of a tradition that is two thousand years old, and this page tells you what it says.
The hour picks the room
The date gives the sign. The house comes from the turning of the Earth. The whole sky wheels past the horizon once a day, so the house of the Sun changes every hour or two.
This page uses whole sign houses. In that system, the sign rising in the east at birth fills the whole first house. The next sign fills the second house, and so on round the circle. It is the oldest house system on record. Our guide to the whole sign house system explains how it works.
Here is a real case. A baby born in New York on December 5, 2026 has the Sun at about 13 degrees of Sagittarius all day. These are the times the Sun moves into each new house, in local clock time.

Look at how long each stay lasts. The second, third, fourth and fifth houses each hold the Sun for about two and a half hours. The ninth and tenth hold it for about 1 hour and 12 minutes each. The Sun crosses the top of the chart in a hurry.
There is a quirk in the first row too. The Sun enters the first house at 6:04 am, but it does not rise until 7:04 am. In whole sign houses, the first house is the whole rising sign. The Sun can sit in that room for an hour before it clears the skyline.
The rarest room is the Sun’s own favorite
One city on one day is a start. For the wide view I counted every US city with 100,000 people or more, across 1900 to 2100.

The first six houses hold 60.6 percent of US Sagittarius Suns. In whole sign houses, those six rooms sit mostly below the horizon. That is the night count again, seen from a new angle.
Now look at the bottom row. The ninth house is where the old writers said the Sun has its joy. A joy is the one house where a planet was said to feel most at ease. The Sun rejoices in the ninth, the house of travel, study and belief. Modern writers link that same house with Sagittarius.
For a US Sagittarius Sun, the ninth house is the rarest of all twelve. It holds 5.3 percent of births, about half as many as the second house. Why the houses spread so unevenly
The reason is the rising sign. Signs do not take the same time to cross the eastern horizon. North of the equator, the signs from Cancer to Sagittarius rise slowly. The signs from Capricorn to Gemini rise fast.
Pisces and Aries are the fastest of all. In New York they each take about 72 minutes to rise. They are the two signs that put a Sagittarius Sun in the tenth and ninth houses. Scorpio, Libra, Virgo and Leo rise slowly, and they put the Sun in the second to fifth houses.
The gap grows as you go north. In Canada, the ninth house holds only 4.4 percent of Sagittarius Suns. In the UK and Ireland it holds 3.5 percent, while the second to fifth houses hold about 12 percent each.
South of the equator, the pattern turns over. In Australia and New Zealand, the eighth and eleventh houses lead at about 10.1 percent each. The third and fourth fall to about 5.6 percent. An Archer in Sydney lives in a different chart from an Archer in Chicago.

You do not need the whole grid to use this. If you know your birth hour to within two hours, this table narrows the house for a US birth.

The day-birth window is short. Between 8 am and 4 pm, almost every US Sagittarius birth is a day birth. Between 6 pm and 6 am, almost none are. The two hours at each end, 6 to 8 am and 4 to 6 pm, split about 40 to 60.
Known to within two hours, the house narrows to two choices in at least 81 percent of cases. Known to the minute, it is exact. Known only to the day, no house holds more than about one US Archer in ten.
A short season that is slowly getting longer
The Sun spends less time in Sagittarius than in almost any other sign. Only Capricorn is shorter. The reason is the shape of Earth’s orbit. Earth passes closest to the Sun in early January, a point called perihelion, and moves fastest there. The Sun in Capricorn sits right on top of that point, and Sagittarius sits next door.
I timed every Sun in Sagittarius from 1600 to 2400, which is 801 stays. The mean is 29.557 days. The shortest was 29.497 days, in 1604. The longest was 29.625 days, in 2400.
That drift is real and slow. The point of perihelion creeps forward along the zodiac, away from Sagittarius and deeper into Capricorn. So each century, the Sun’s stay in Sagittarius gets about 22 minutes longer.

What the rest of the chart adds
The Sun is one piece of furniture in a twelve room house. Three other pieces change how a Sagittarius Sun comes out.
The first is the Moon. In a night chart, the Moon leads the chart, and the tradition gives the inner life more weight than the public face. Stephen Arroyo reads the Sun as the core of vital force and the Moon as the way we take things in. For a night-born Archer, that second layer sits in front.
The second is the rising sign, which we have seen sets the house. The third is Jupiter, the ruler, and where it stands. Robert Hand, in Horoscope Symbols, makes the point for every sign. The Sun shows the will, and the rest of the chart shows how the will gets its way.
Neighboring signs show what changes when the Sun moves a few weeks. Sun in Scorpio places identity under intensity and control instead. Liz Greene reads the Sun as the hero’s path, and each sign sends that hero down a different road.
How I measured it
Every figure on this page comes from my own runs. Here is the method, so anyone can check it.
For the Sun, I used the astronomy-engine library, a standard ephemeris. An ephemeris is a table of where each body sits at a given moment. I used the tropical zodiac, the one tied to the seasons. I found each entry into Sagittarius, at 240 degrees, and each exit, at 270 degrees, by halving the time window until it was exact to the second. I checked the 2026 and 2027 times against NASA’s JPL Horizons service. They agree to within six seconds.
For day and night, I built a regular grid with no random draws. It took every fourth year from 1900 to 2100 and one moment every 15 minutes of each stay. Each moment was tested in 4,454 cities of 100,000 people or more, 353 of them in the US, weighted by size. A birth counts as a day birth when the center of the Sun is above the horizon. The rising sign came from the standard formula using star time and the tilt of the Earth.
The ranking of all twelve signs used the same grid with every fifth year instead of every fourth. That is why it shows 39.8 percent for Sagittarius, against 40.0 percent in the main count. The gap is the size of the sampling step, and it is also why I call the last two places a tie.
Then I checked it by a second route. I drew 400,000 US births at random with a secure random number source. The Sun’s sign came straight from its position, with no date table. The height of the Sun and the rising sign came from a different calculation that turns the sky into the local horizon. The day share came out at 39.8 percent, against 40.0 percent on the grid. Every house agreed to within 0.1 points.
I ran that second route again on the years 1626 to 2425. The day share was 39.7 percent, and every house stayed within 0.1 points of the first result.
Two limits are worth saying. City sizes stand in for where people are born, so rural births are left out. And I spread births evenly across the day, while real hospitals book more births in the morning. That would nudge the day share up a little. It would not turn six night births in ten into a minority.

In the US, a night birth. About 60 percent of Sagittarius Suns born in the US arrive with the Sun below the horizon. In the UK the share rises to 68 percent. In Australia it falls to 41 percent.

For a US birth, the second and fifth houses lead at about 10.3 percent each, with the third and fourth close behind. The ninth and tenth are the least likely, at about 5.3 percent each.
Can I find my Sun’s house without a birth time?

About 29.56 days on average. Across 1600 to 2400, the shortest stay was 29.50 days and the longest was 29.62 days. Only Capricorn is shorter.
Does a night birth weaken a Sagittarius Sun?
Not in the sense of a bad chart. In the Hellenistic tradition, a night birth puts the Moon in charge and makes Venus the helpful planet of the chart. Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius, then works from outside the sect. The tradition reads that as a change of emphasis, not a loss.
