What “fall” means, and what it does not
Tradition gives each planet four special signs. There is a home, where the planet rules. There is an exaltation, where it is an honored guest. Opposite the home is the exile. Opposite the exaltation is the fall. The Moon’s home is Cancer and its exaltation is Taurus. So its exile is Capricorn and its fall is Scorpio.
Ptolemy places the Moon’s exaltation in Taurus. William Lilly, in his Christian Astrology of 1647, lists the Moon’s fall in Scorpio. A planet in its fall is like a guest who arrives at the wrong party. It still works. It just has to work harder to feel at home.

The Virgo Moon: the helper

A Virgo Moon calms down by sorting things out. It shows love through useful help. When upset, it makes lists, cleans, or worries. It notices what is broken and wants to fix it.
The Scorpio Moon: the keeper
Scorpio is a water sign, and fixed, which means it holds a course. A Scorpio Moon feels in depth, not in width. It gives trust slowly and remembers a hurt for a long time. It shows love through loyalty. When upset, it goes quiet and watches.
Mars rules Scorpio in the old scheme. So the Scorpio Moon hands its mood to Mars, the planet of heat and defense. The Virgo Moon hands its mood to Mercury, the planet of words. One partner guards, and the other explains.

Both signs are night signs too. Ptolemy calls Virgo and Scorpio feminine and nocturnal, and he calls the Moon a night planet. So both Moons sit in signs of their own kind. Neither one likes to air its feelings in public. A quiet home suits them both.
The modes add texture. Scorpio is fixed and holds on. Virgo is mutable and adjusts. In a good week, Virgo tunes the plan and Scorpio sees it through. In a bad week, Virgo wants to talk it over, and Scorpio wants the subject closed.

Is the sextile exact?
A sextile by sign is not always a sextile by degree. A Moon at 1 degree of Virgo and a Moon at 29 degrees of Scorpio are two signs apart. Yet the real gap is 88 degrees. That is nearly a square, a tense angle.
Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle, called an orb. Here is the share of couples with a true sextile.

These values hold for every Moon pair. The Moon spends close to the same time in each degree, so the math is plain. With an 8 degree orb, fewer than half of Virgo Moon and Scorpio Moon couples have an exact sextile. In about 3.6 percent, the two Moons form a square across the sign line instead.
What Ptolemy adds: two readings
Ptolemy lists more ties than the aspects. Signs that “command and obey” sit the same distance from an equinox. He says they “ascend in equal periods of time and are on equal parallels.” The northern sign of the pair commands, and the southern one obeys.
There are two ways to count. The notes in the Robbins translation count whole signs from Aries. They list five command pairs, and Virgo with Scorpio is one of them. Virgo is five signs after Aries, and Scorpio is five signs before it. Read this way, Virgo commands and Scorpio obeys, on top of the sextile.
The other way counts degree by degree from the equinox point itself. Read that way, Virgo mirrors Libra, and Scorpio mirrors Leo. New moons in Virgo, full moons in Scorpio
Here is a small pattern that is real. A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. One born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.
The Sun does not move at one speed through the year. It is slowest in the northern summer. So the Moon meets it, or faces it, on a few more days in some signs than others.

The two rows mirror each other. Virgo Moons lean toward new moon births. Scorpio Moons lean toward full moon births. In a couple, the two leanings cancel out. 15.71 percent of Virgo Moon and Scorpio Moon couples include at least one new moon birth, and 15.72 percent at least one full moon birth.
How common is a Virgo Moon and Scorpio Moon couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank the Moon pairs. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.
Check your Moons before you read on
The Moon moves fast. It stays in one sign for about 54.6 hours on average, and between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. So on 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour. A person born on such a day has two possible Moon signs.
Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. About 20.7 percent of couples get the wrong Moon pair from two noon charts, one couple in five. Only about 31 percent have both Moons fixed by the date alone. A Scorpio Moon born early in the day could be a Libra Moon. A Virgo Moon born late could be a Libra Moon too.
How we measured
We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second, then summed time interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
What the research says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.
So the sextile is not a promise, and the fall is not a warning. They are symbols. A Virgo Moon and a Scorpio Moon share a quiet, private way of caring. The symbols point to where one helps, and to where the help has to wait.
