Virgo Moon and Libra Moon compatibility gets two answers from the old books, and both come from the same author. Read sign by sign, the two Moons cannot see each other. Read degree by degree, each Moon has a mirror twin in the other sign. This page explains both readings and shows how many couples fall on each side.
The reason for the split is a line in the sky. Virgo ends and Libra begins at the fall equinox, the day when day and night last the same length. The two signs touch at that line. Some old rules count the signs as whole blocks. Others count the degrees on each side of the line. For this pair, the choice changes the answer.
One thing first. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. Read what follows as a lens, not a forecast.

A Moon sign in plain words
Your Moon sign is the part of the sky the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your private self. It is the part that reacts before you think. It shows what soothes you and how you look after the people you love.
To compare two Moons, you count the signs between them. Each distance has a name. Virgo and Libra sit side by side, one sign apart. Modern astrologers call that distance a semi-sextile, half of a sextile. It is a minor angle that later astrologers added. Ptolemy does not count it. Two Moons with no rank
Tradition names the signs where each planet does well or badly. The Moon’s home is Cancer, its exaltation is Taurus, its exile is Capricorn and its fall is Scorpio. Virgo and Libra are none of these. So both Moons here are peregrine, a Latin word for a traveler. A peregrine Moon gets no help from its sign, but it is not damaged either.
When the Moon has no rank, astrologers look to the ruler of its sign. Mercury rules Virgo. Venus rules Libra. So the Virgo Moon hands its mood to Mercury, the planet of words and detail. The Libra Moon hands its mood to Venus, the planet of taste and harmony.
One old detail links the two rulers. Virgo is the sign of Venus’s fall, the place where Venus has the least ease. Ptolemy and William Lilly agree on it. As a symbol, the Virgo Moon’s world is the one where the Libra Moon’s ruler feels least at home.
The Virgo Moon: careful and useful
Virgo is an earth sign, and mutable, which means it likes to adjust and improve. A Virgo Moon calms down by sorting things out. It shows love through useful help. Libra is an air sign, and cardinal, which means it opens a season. It opens the fall. A Libra Moon calms down when things feel fair and pleasant. It shows love through attention and good manners. Reading one: averted by whole sign
The Greek astronomer Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos around 150 AD. In Book 1, he lists the ties that join two signs. First come the four aspects: opposition, trine, square and sextile. Signs one apart share none of them.
Next come two extra ties. Signs that “command and obey” sit the same distance from an equinox. Signs that “behold” each other sit the same distance from a solstice. Signs with no tie at all, he says, are “disjunct” and “alien”. Of signs one apart, he writes that they are “as it were averted from one another”. Today that state is called aversion, from a Latin word for turning away.
The notes in the Robbins translation count the command pairs by whole sign, starting from Aries. They list five: Taurus with Pisces, Gemini with Aquarius, Cancer with Capricorn, Leo with Sagittarius, and Virgo with Scorpio. Aries and Libra are left out. Read this way, Libra commands no sign and obeys none. So a Virgo Moon and a Libra Moon are averted, like any two signs side by side.
As a symbol, averted Moons do not see each other’s needs at first glance. The Virgo Moon sees a task. The Libra Moon sees a mood in the room. Each has to learn to look where the other is looking.
Reading two: mirror twins by degree
Ptolemy’s own words point to the equinox itself. And the fall equinox is the exact line between Virgo and Libra. Read degree by degree, each point in Virgo has a twin in Libra, the same distance from that line. The twin of 10 degrees Virgo is 20 degrees Libra. The twin of 25 degrees Virgo is 5 degrees Libra. The two degrees always add up to 30.
These twins share two traits. They rise over the horizon in the same length of time. They sit the same distance from the sky’s equator, one north and one south. Ptolemy calls such points commanding and obeying. The one on the north side, where days are longer than nights, commands. Here that is Virgo. William Lilly used the same mirror in 1647 and called it a contra-antiscion.
Take the labels as sky words, not rules for who leads at home. In this reading, the two Moons are not strangers. They stand on either side of one line, facing each other.
How many couples are true mirror twins?
Every Virgo Moon has a twin degree in Libra. But the partner’s Moon has to sit on or near that degree. Here is the share of couples that meet the test.

So the mirror is a real tie for about one couple in five, with 3 degrees of slack. For the rest, the whole-sign reading is the one that fits. That is the honest answer to “do Ptolemy’s rules link these Moons?” It depends on the degrees.
What the pair looks like at home
Earth and air mix in a useful way. Earth wants results. Air wants talk and ideas. The Virgo Moon brings the plan. The Libra Moon brings the tone. In a good week, dinner with friends gets planned by one and hosted by the other.
Mutable and cardinal add a rhythm. Libra likes to start things. Virgo likes to adjust them once they run. That split works well when each respects the other’s part.
The friction comes from the rulers. Mercury likes things to be correct. Venus likes things to be kind. A Virgo Moon says the true thing. A Libra Moon wants it said nicely. Both are right, and both can feel hurt.

Is the semi-sextile exact?
By sign, the Moons are 30 degrees apart. By degree, the real gap runs from almost nothing to almost 60 degrees. With an 8 degree orb, 46 percent of couples have a true semi-sextile. In about 7 percent, the two Moons form a different major angle across the sign line instead. A Virgo Moon at 29 degrees and a Libra Moon at 2 degrees are only 3 degrees apart, a conjunction in all but name.
These shares hold for any Moon pair one sign apart. The Moon spends close to the same time in each degree, so the math is plain.
How common is a Virgo Moon and Libra Moon couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank the Moon pairs. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.
One birth time from a different pair
The Moon stays in one sign for about 54.6 hours on average, and between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. So on 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour. Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent.
For this pair, the risk has a special shape. The Moon moves from Virgo straight into Libra. A person born on that day can be either one. So a couple that reads as Virgo and Libra could turn out to be Virgo and Virgo, or Libra and Libra, once the hours are known. About 20.7 percent of couples get the wrong Moon pair from two noon charts. Only about 31 percent have both Moons fixed by the date alone.
New moon and full moon births
A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. One born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.
These shares shift with the season, because the Sun moves more slowly in the northern summer. Among Virgo Moons, 8.32 percent have the Sun in Virgo too. Among Libra Moons, 8.19 percent have the Sun in Libra. For a couple, 15.83 percent include at least one new moon birth, and 15.6 percent at least one full moon birth. How we measured
We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second, then summed time interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. The mirror shares assume the two Moons fall at random within their signs. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
What the research says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.
So neither reading of Ptolemy is a verdict on a couple. They are two ways of looking at the same line in the sky. A Virgo Moon and a Libra Moon stand on either side of it, one sorting and one smoothing.
