Aries moon and Libra moon compatibility joins two Moons that sit face to face across the wheel. Aries opens spring. Libra opens fall. The line between them is the line of the equinoxes, the two days a year when day and night are the same length. This page reads the pair with the old rules and adds one fact we measured over eight hundred years of real Moon positions.
Here is that fact. The Moon’s sign and the Sun’s sign are linked by the phase of the Moon. In most signs, that link leans one way. In Aries and Libra, it does not lean at all. New Moon births and full Moon births come out even for this pair, to within two hundredths of a point. We explain what that means below, and why no other pair of two different signs does it the same way.
First, a plain word on what this is. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. Read this as a way to talk about needs and habits, not as a forecast.

A few words on those terms. The element is the old four-way sort of signs into fire, earth, air and water. The mode tells you where a sign falls in its season. A cardinal sign is the first sign of a season, so both Moons here belong to signs that start things.
The rank is what old astrologers called dignity. A planet in a sign it rules is strong. A planet in the sign opposite its home is weak. The Moon rules Cancer, is at her best in Taurus, and is weakest in Capricorn and Scorpio. Aries and Libra are none of those. So both Moons here are what the old books call peregrine, which means a traveler with no rank in that sign. In Libra, the Moon holds a minor rank called a face over the first ten degrees. It is a small plus, not a major one.
An opposition on the equinox line
Aries and Libra are six signs apart. That makes them an opposition, the widest link on the wheel. The two Moons look straight at each other.
Modern writers read the opposition as a pull between two sides. Each partner shows the other what they lack. The Aries Moon brings speed and nerve. The Libra Moon brings pause and tact. The pair can feel like a seesaw. It works when both keep a foot on the ground.
The two rulers fit that picture. Mars rules Aries. Venus rules Libra. In old myth and in old charts, Mars and Venus are the classic couple. One pushes. One draws in. It is a fair story for this pair to talk about.
What Ptolemy said about this axis
Ptolemy was a Greek astronomer who wrote the Tetrabiblos in the second century. It is the oldest full rulebook of Western astrology we have. He gave Aries and Libra a special place. In book one, chapter twelve, he calls both signs male and linked to the day. His reason is that the equinox circle runs through them.
In chapter thirteen, he sorts the links between signs. He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. He calls the square and the opposition not harmonious. His reason is that the two signs in those links are of opposite kinds. That reason works for the square. It does not work here. By his own list, Aries and Libra are both male signs. So the old rule calls this link hard, but the old reason for it does not fit this pair.
Ptolemy also sorts pairs of signs as ones that command and obey, and ones that behold each other. Aries and Libra fall outside both groups. They sit on the very line those groups are built around. They are not in aversion either, a term for signs that cannot see each other at all. They see each other fully, face to face.
New Moon and full Moon births come out even
Now for the measured part. It needs one idea first. The Moon’s phase depends on where it stands from the Sun.
- If your Moon sits in the same sign as your Sun, you were born near a new Moon.
- If your Moon sits in the sign opposite your Sun, you were born near a full Moon.
So an Aries Moon with a Libra Sun is a full Moon birth. A Libra Moon with an Aries Sun is a full Moon birth too. This pair holds both halves of the spring and fall full Moons.
What share of each Moon comes with each kind of Sun? We measured it over every moment from the year 1600 to the year 2400. Here is what we found for the signs that matter most.

Look at the gap in each row. For Cancer and Capricorn, it is more than half a point, and it runs in opposite ways. For Aries and Libra, it is three hundredths of a point or less. That is too small to mean anything. These two Moons are the only two where the scales sit level.
Now take a couple. What share of Aries Moon and Libra Moon couples has at least one partner born near a new Moon? We found 15.73 percent. What share has at least one partner born near a full Moon? We found 15.71 percent. The two numbers match.
A few other pairs match too, but by luck of the sum. In a Leo and Aquarius pair, for example, one Moon leans toward new Moons and the other leans back the other way. The two tilts cancel out. Aries and Libra do not cancel anything. Each Moon is level on its own. Among the 66 pairs of two different signs, this is the only one built that way.
Why the equinox signs stay level
The cause is the speed of the Sun across the sky. Earth’s path around the Sun is a slight oval. We pass closest to the Sun in early January. We are farthest in early July. So the Sun seems to move faster in the northern winter and slower in the summer.
When the Sun moves slowly through a sign, it stays there longer. More new Moons land while it is there. So Cancer, crossed in early summer, collects extra new Moons. Its opposite sign, Capricorn, collects extra full Moons. In winter, the reverse holds.
At the equinoxes, the Sun is close to its average speed. It is neither in a hurry nor in a crawl. So Aries and Libra get their fair share of both phases. The equinox line is the balance point of the whole pattern. That is a fitting result for a pair ruled by the sign of the scales.
What does this mean for a couple? In plain terms, nothing is tilted. Tradition reads a new Moon birth as a fresh start and a full Moon birth as a peak of light and pull. How exact is the opposition?
An opposition by sign is not always an opposition in degrees. Each sign spans 30 degrees. A Moon at 2 degrees Aries and a Moon at 28 degrees Libra are six signs apart, but they sit 206 degrees apart. That is 26 degrees away from a true opposition.
Astrologers allow a margin called an orb. It is how far from exact a link can be and still count. We measured how many couples fall inside common orbs.

So at the usual orb of 8 degrees, fewer than half of these couples have an exact opposition. The rest have Moons in opposite signs but no aspect in degrees. The same shares hold for every pair of Moon signs, since the Moon spends even time in each part of each sign. Ask for both exact degrees before you read the link as strong.
Are you sure of both Moons?
The Moon moves fast. It spends about 54.6 hours in a sign on average, and anywhere from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. It changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. On those days, a birth date alone gives two possible Moon signs.
Many free tools guess noon when you give no birth time. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign for 10.98 percent of people, about one in nine. A couple needs two right Moons. With a noon guess for both, 20.75 percent of couples see the wrong Moon pair. That is about one couple in five.
Only 31.45 percent of couples can know both Moon signs from their dates alone. Everyone else needs at least one birth time. If you read this page as an Aries and Libra Moon couple, check both times first. An Aries Moon on a split day could be a Pisces or a Taurus Moon. A Libra Moon could be a Virgo or a Scorpio Moon.
How common is this pair?
Not rare, and not special. The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign, between 8.331 and 8.336 percent. So any pair of two different Moon signs turns up in about one couple in 72. Any pair of the same sign turns up in about one couple in 144. The small gaps between pairs are smaller than the gap between two careful methods. We do not rank Moon pairs for that reason.
What studies say
The largest test of sign matching we know of is by David Voas. In 2007, he looked at the 2001 census of England and Wales. It held about 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of couples with the same sign turned out to come from errors in how dates were written down.
That test covers Sun signs, not Moon signs. No large test of Moon signs exists to our knowledge. So nothing here predicts how an Aries Moon and a Libra Moon will do together. The value of the reading is in the talk it starts.

How we measured it
We used two separate routes that share no code. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every Moon, Sun and sign change from January 1, 1600 to January 1, 2400, to within a tenth of a second. We then added up the exact time in each case, with no random draws.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the Moon and Sun every hour on a grid shifted by half an hour, or just over seven million moments. The two routes agreed to within 0.04 of a point on every Moon figure. Signs are tropical, which means they are tied to the seasons. Days and noon charts use Greenwich time.
