Libra Moon and Sagittarius Moon compatibility is a sextile, the friendly angle of two signs. Libra is air and Sagittarius is fire. Air feeds a fire, and the old books read this link as easy and warm.
The hosts make the pair unusual. Venus rules Libra and Jupiter rules Sagittarius. Tradition calls these two the benefics, the planets that help. So each Moon lodges with a kind host, and the two hosts sit two signs apart.
This page reads the pair step by step, with numbers where they help. One thing first: astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. Read what follows as a lens, not a forecast.

What a Moon sign shows
Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your private self. It is the part of you that reacts before you think. It shows what soothes you and how you care for the people you love.
Two Moons are compared by the number of signs between them. Libra and Sagittarius sit two signs apart, with Scorpio between them. That gap is a sextile, an angle of 60 degrees. Our moon sign compatibility guide covers every distance between two Moons.
Two kind hosts, two signs apart
Every sign has a ruling planet, the host of anything placed there. The old astrologers split the planets into helpers and troublemakers. Venus and Jupiter were the two helpers, called the benefics. Mars and Saturn were the two hard ones.
In this pair, both Moons lodge with a benefic. Venus hosts the Libra Moon. She stands for grace, pleasure, and fair terms. Jupiter hosts the Sagittarius Moon. He stands for growth, faith, and a wide view.
Neither host holds a major rank in the other’s sign. Venus is not at home or honored in Sagittarius. Jupiter is not at home or honored in Libra. So the two hosts do not lend each other strength. Each keeps its own house and its own rules.
Read as a symbol, this is a pair of generous hosts who run their homes in different ways. Venus wants the room to feel pleasant. Jupiter wants the room to feel open. Both want the guest to leave happier than they came.
A plain guest in both signs
Tradition gives each planet four special signs. The home is where the planet rules. The exaltation is where it is an honored guest. The exile sits opposite the home. The fall sits opposite the exaltation.
For the Moon, those four signs are Cancer, Taurus, Capricorn, and Scorpio. Libra and Sagittarius are none of them. So neither Moon starts from a hard seat, and neither gets a boost. Both are plain guests.
William Lilly, in his Christian Astrology of 1647, adds a small detail. Each sign splits into three parts of ten degrees, called faces. The Moon holds the first face of Libra and the middle face of Sagittarius. A face is a minor rank. It does not change the whole picture, but it is a quiet thread that ties the Moon to both signs.
For Libra alone, see our page on the Moon in Libra. For the other sign, see our page on the Moon in Sagittarius.
What Ptolemy says about the sextile
In Book 1 of the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy lists four angles that link two signs. They are the opposition, the trine, the square, and the sextile. He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. His reason is simple: the two signs share a gender.
The old books sort the signs into two groups. Fire and air signs are masculine. Earth and water signs are feminine. Libra and Sagittarius are both masculine, so their sextile links two signs of one kind. Ptolemy reads that as ease.
He also names two quieter links. Some signs “command and obey”. Others “behold” each other, which means they see each other on equal terms. There are two ways to read his list.
- By degree, as Lilly read it, the links come from mirror points around the solstices and equinoxes. Libra mirrors Pisces and Virgo. Sagittarius mirrors Capricorn and Cancer. The two signs do not mirror each other.
- By whole signs, as F. E. Robbins lists them in the Loeb edition (notes 80 and 83), Libra beholds Aries and Sagittarius beholds Aquarius. Libra stands outside the command scheme. So there is no link here either.
So the whole classical bond of this pair is the sextile itself. That is enough for the old books. A sextile between two signs of one gender is a mild, open door.
Is the sextile exact?
A sextile by sign is not always 60 degrees by degree. A Moon at 1 degree of Libra and a Moon at 29 degrees of Sagittarius are two signs apart. Yet the real gap is 88 degrees, close to a square. Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle. That slack is called an orb.
| Orb allowed | Share of couples with a true sextile. |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees | 19 percent of couples. |
| Within 6 degrees | 36 percent of couples. |
| Within 8 degrees | 46 percent of couples. |
| Within 10 degrees | 56 percent of couples. |
These values hold for every Moon pair, because the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. With an 8 degree orb, about 3.6 percent of these couples have a square across the sign line instead. For them, the easy angle by sign is a tense one by degree. Most couples fall in between, with no exact angle at all.
Air meets fire
Libra is air, the element of talk and links between people. It is cardinal, which means it opens a season: the northern autumn. A Libra Moon calms down by restoring balance. It weighs both sides before it reacts. It shows love through kind words, good taste, and time together.
Sagittarius is fire, the element of drive and faith. It is mutable, which means it closes a season and eases the shift to the next. A Sagittarius Moon calms down by moving. It needs space, a plan, a trip, or a big idea. It shows love through honesty, humor, and shared adventure.
Only two of the 78 Moon pairs join cardinal air and mutable fire at a sextile. This is one. The other is Aries with Gemini, where the elements swap roles.
The mix sets the tone. The Libra Moon brings the words and the social ease. The Sagittarius Moon brings the spark and the long view. Air lets fire breathe. Fire gives air something to talk about.
Where the two Moons pull apart
An easy angle does not mean no friction. The friction here is about speed and depth. The Libra Moon wants to settle a feeling with care, in the right words. The Sagittarius Moon wants to name it fast and move on.
Under stress, Libra smooths things over and waits. Sagittarius says the blunt thing and leaves the room for a walk. Libra hears the blunt thing as rude. Sagittarius hears the wait as a lack of trust.
Both Moons share one habit: they dislike heavy moods. So a hard talk can slide for weeks while both keep things light. The cost shows up later, as distance neither one chose.
- The Libra Moon states a need plainly, without first checking the mood.
- The Sagittarius Moon stays for the end of a hard talk, then takes the walk.
- Both set a time each month to raise what they have been skipping.
- Both treat a plan for fun as real care, not an escape.
New moon and full moon births
A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.
| Moon sign | New moon births, Sun in the same sign | Full moon births, Sun in the opposite sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Libra Moon | 8.19 percent, Sun in Libra | 8.20 percent, Sun in Aries. |
| Sagittarius Moon | 7.96 percent, Sun in Sagittarius | 8.44 percent, Sun in Gemini. |
The cause is the Sun’s speed. The Earth’s orbit is not a perfect circle. So the Sun seems to move fastest in early January and slowest in early July. It crosses Sagittarius at a fast pace, so a Sagittarius Moon has fewer days to meet it. It crosses Gemini at a slow pace, so a Sagittarius Moon has more days to face it. Libra and Aries sit near the average pace, so the Libra Moon stays level.
In a couple, 15.50 percent include at least one new moon birth. That puts the pair 62nd of the 78. And 15.95 percent include at least one full moon birth, which puts it 17th. The lean comes from the Sagittarius side alone.
How common is a Libra Moon and Sagittarius Moon couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank the Moon pairs by how common they are. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.
Check the birth time first
The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day. It stays in one sign for 54.6 hours on average, and between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. On 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour.
Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. Two noon charts give the wrong Moon pair to 20.75 percent of couples, about one couple in five. A Libra Moon born early could be a Virgo Moon, and one born late could be a Scorpio Moon. A Sagittarius Moon born early could be a Scorpio Moon, and one born late could be a Capricorn Moon.
How we measured
We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. It then summed the time, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
What the research says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.
So the sextile and the two kind hosts are not a promise. They are symbols. A Libra Moon and a Sagittarius Moon both like a light heart and a good time. The symbols show where that shared taste helps, and where one of them has to slow down and stay for the hard part.

Frequently asked questions
Are a Libra Moon and a Sagittarius Moon compatible?
Astrology reads them as a sextile between air and fire, with Venus and Jupiter as hosts. The old books call that easy. No study has shown that Moon signs predict a couple’s future, so treat it as a lens.
Why do Venus and Jupiter matter for this pair?
Venus rules Libra and Jupiter rules Sagittarius. Tradition calls them the two benefics, the helpful planets. So each Moon lodges with a kind host, though neither host holds a major rank in the other’s sign.
Do Libra and Sagittarius behold each other in Ptolemy?
No. By degree, their mirror points do not meet. By whole signs, Robbins lists Libra with Aries and Sagittarius with Aquarius. Their link is the sextile alone.
How common is a Libra Moon and Sagittarius Moon couple?
About 1 random couple in 72. The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign, so every pair of two different Moon signs has the same odds.
Can a noon chart give me the wrong Moon sign?
Yes. A noon guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine. For a couple, two noon charts give the wrong pair about one time in five.
