Aries moon and Scorpio moon compatibility is an odd case in the old rules. Both signs belong to the same planet, Mars. Yet the two signs cannot see each other. Ptolemy put them in a small group of pairs he called disjunct, which means cut off. So this pair shares a boss but has no line of sight.
This page walks through that puzzle. It uses the old sources, the real geometry of the sky, and figures we measured over eight hundred years of Moon positions. One of those figures is simple and new: about four couples in a hundred with these Moons hide a close trine or opposition across the sign line.
First, a plain word on what this is. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. Read this as a way to talk about needs and habits, not as a forecast.
Two Moons, one ruler

Each sign has a ruler, a planet said to own it. In the old system, which stops at Saturn, Mars rules both Aries and Scorpio. Aries is the day home of Mars. Scorpio is its night home. Modern writers give Scorpio to Pluto as well. The old view is the one that makes this pair a puzzle, so we use it here.
Two signs with the same ruler share a kind of family tie. There are five such pairs on the wheel, one for each planet from Mercury to Saturn. Two of them are squares. One is a pair of next-door signs. The last two share a ruler across a gap of five signs: Aries with Scorpio, both ruled by Mars, and Taurus with Libra, both ruled by Venus.

The element is the old four-way sort of signs into fire, earth, air and water. Fire and water are the classic mismatch: one dries, one soaks. The mode tells you where a sign falls in its season. Cardinal signs start a season, and fixed signs hold it steady. So an Aries Moon likes to begin, and a Scorpio Moon likes to stay.
Why Ptolemy calls this pair cut off
Ptolemy was a Greek astronomer who wrote the Tetrabiblos in the second century. It is the oldest full rulebook of Western astrology we have. In book one, he lists the ways two signs can be linked.
- By aspect: the opposition, trine, square and sextile.
- By command: pairs set evenly on each side of the start of Aries.
- By beholding: pairs set evenly on each side of the start of Cancer, with days of the same length.
In chapter sixteen, he names the signs with none of these links. He calls them disjunct and alien. They are either one sign apart or five signs apart. Of the five-sign gap he writes that it cuts the circle into unequal parts, while the true aspects cut it evenly.
Aries and Scorpio are five signs apart. Modern astrologers call that gap a quincunx, an angle of 150 degrees. They also fail the tests of command and beholding. So they are disjunct in the strict sense. Only 16 of the 78 pairs of signs are cut off this fully.
Modern writers read the quincunx as a link that needs constant small fixes. The two sides do not share an element, a mode, or a kind. Nothing lines up by default. The couple has to build each bridge by hand. That reading fits a pair of Moons that feel things in very different ways.
The Moon’s fall, and where it comes from
A planet has a rank in each sign, which old astrologers called dignity. The Moon rules Cancer. She is at her best, or exalted, in Taurus. She is in her fall, her weakest place, in Scorpio. In Aries, she has no major rank at all. The old books call that peregrine, which means a traveler.
Ptolemy gives a reason for the Moon’s best sign, and it ties straight back to Aries. In chapter nineteen, he says the Moon meets the Sun in Aries at the spring new Moon. She then shows her first thin crescent in the next sign, Taurus. So Taurus became her place of rising power. Scorpio, the sign straight across from Taurus, became her fall.

A fall is a statement about the Moon’s comfort, not about the person. Writers such as Liz Greene read a Scorpio Moon as deep, private and loyal. The feelings run strong but show little on the surface. An Aries Moon shows its feelings fast and moves on. The gap between those styles is the real talking point for this couple.
The links hiding across the sign line
Here is the measured part. It needs one idea first. Each sign spans 30 degrees. Two Moons can be five signs apart and still sit close to a different angle in degrees.
Take a Moon at 2 degrees Aries and a Moon at 28 degrees Scorpio. By sign, that is a quincunx. In degrees, the two Moons are 124 degrees apart. That is only 4 degrees from a trine, the easy link of 120 degrees. Now flip it. A Moon at 28 degrees Aries and a Moon at 2 degrees Scorpio sit 176 degrees apart. That is close to an opposition, the face to face link of 180 degrees. Astrologers call these out of sign aspects. They count in degrees but not in signs.
How common is it? We measured the share of Aries and Scorpio Moon couples at each common orb. The orb is how far from exact a link can be and still count.

Two things stand out. First, fewer than half of these couples have a true quincunx at the usual orb of 8 degrees. The rest have Moons five signs apart but no aspect in degrees. Second, about one couple in fourteen at that orb has a different link instead, split evenly between the two kinds. The trine shows up when the Aries Moon is early and the Scorpio Moon is late. The opposition shows up the other way round.
Which reading wins? That depends on the school. A reader who works by whole signs sees a quincunx and aversion. A reader who works by degrees sees a trine or an opposition. Both views are old. Ask for both exact degrees before you decide what kind of link you have.
New Moon and full Moon births
The Moon’s phase depends on where it stands from the Sun. If your Moon sits in the same sign as your Sun, you were born near a new Moon. If it sits in the sign opposite your Sun, you were born near a full Moon.
For a Scorpio Moon, the opposite sign is Taurus. We found that 8.33 percent of Scorpio Moons come with a Taurus Sun, against 8.06 percent with a Scorpio Sun. That tilt is real. The Sun moves more slowly in late spring than in late fall, since Earth is farther from the Sun then. A slow Sun collects more full Moons in the sign opposite. The Aries Moon, near the equinox, stays almost level: 8.21 percent new Moon type, 8.18 percent full Moon type.
For the couple, this gives 15.83 percent with at least one partner born near a full Moon, and 15.61 percent with at least one born near a new Moon. The tilt is small, but it comes from the Scorpio side. Our guide to moon phase compatibility shows how to find each partner’s phase by hand.
Are you sure of both Moons?
The Moon moves fast. It spends about 54.6 hours in a sign on average, and anywhere from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. It changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. On those days, a birth date alone gives two possible Moon signs.
Many free tools guess noon when you give no birth time. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign for 10.98 percent of people, about one in nine. With a noon guess for both partners, 20.75 percent of couples see the wrong Moon pair, about one in five. Only 31.45 percent of couples can know both Moons from their dates alone.
For this pair, the stakes are high. An Aries Moon on a split day could be a Taurus Moon, the Moon at her best. A Scorpio Moon could be a Libra or a Sagittarius Moon, with no fall at all. Check both birth times first.
How common is this pair?
Not rare. The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign, between 8.331 and 8.336 percent. So any pair of two different Moon signs turns up in about one couple in 72. Any pair of the same sign turns up in about one couple in 144. The tiny gaps between pairs are smaller than the gap between two careful methods, so we do not rank them.
What studies say
The largest test of sign matching we know of is by David Voas. In 2007, he looked at the 2001 census of England and Wales, with about 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of couples with the same sign came from errors in how dates were written down.
That test covers Sun signs, not Moon signs. No large test of Moon signs exists to our knowledge. So nothing here predicts how an Aries Moon and a Scorpio Moon will do together.
Talking points for this pair
- Speed. The Aries Moon feels it, says it, and moves on. The Scorpio Moon feels it, keeps it, and turns it over for days. Neither is wrong. Say which pace you each need.
- Anger. Mars rules both of you. One of you flares and cools. The other smolders. Agree on how you will come back after a fight.
- Trust. The Scorpio Moon gives trust slowly. The Aries Moon gives it fast and can lose it fast. Talk about what builds it for each of you.
- Bridges. The quincunx means nothing lines up by default. Name one small habit that helps you meet in the middle.

How we measured it
We used two separate routes that share no code. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every Moon, Sun and sign change from January 1, 1600 to January 1, 2400, to within a tenth of a second. We then added up the exact time in each case, with no random draws. The shares in degrees come from Moon positions spread evenly inside each sign, which our hourly check confirmed.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the Moon and Sun every hour on a grid shifted by half an hour, or just over seven million moments. The two routes agreed to within 0.04 of a point on every Moon figure. Signs are tropical, which means they are tied to the seasons. Days and noon charts use Greenwich time.
