Aries moon and Sagittarius moon compatibility is the textbook good match. Both Moons sit in fire signs, four signs apart, in the link astrologers call a trine. Most guides stop there. This one looks at two things they skip. The first is who rules the fire signs at night, which is when the Moon holds sway. The second is a lean toward full Moon births that we measured over eight hundred years of real sky.
Here is that lean in one line. In couples with these two Moons, a partner born near a full Moon is more common than a partner born near a new Moon: 15.93 percent against 15.52 percent. The gap is small, but it is real, and it comes from the way the Sun speeds up and slows down through the year.
First, a plain word on what this is. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. Read this as a way to talk about needs and habits, not as a forecast.

A few words on those terms. The element is the old four-way sort of signs into fire, earth, air and water. The mode tells you where a sign falls in its season. A cardinal sign opens a season. A mutable sign closes one and gets ready for the next. So the Aries Moon starts things, and the Sagittarius Moon wraps them up and looks ahead.
The rank is what old astrologers called dignity. The Moon rules Cancer, is at her best in Taurus, and is weakest in Capricorn and Scorpio. Aries and Sagittarius are none of those. So both Moons are peregrine, a word that means a traveler with no rank in that sign. In Sagittarius, the Moon holds a minor rank called a face over the middle ten degrees. It is a small plus, not a major one.
A trine of the same kind
Aries and Sagittarius are four signs apart. That link is a trine, an angle of 120 degrees. It is the classic easy aspect.
Ptolemy, the Greek astronomer who wrote the Tetrabiblos in the second century, gives a reason for that. In book one, chapter thirteen, he calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. His reason is that they join signs of the same kind, all male or all female. Aries and Sagittarius are both male signs in his list. So here, the old reason and the old rule agree.
Modern writers read the fire trine as shared warmth, fast humor and a love of the new. Both Moons like to move. Neither likes to sit with a heavy mood for long. The risk is the flip side of that ease. When both partners flee a hard feeling, no one stays to deal with it.
Who rules the fire signs at night
Here is the part most guides skip. Each group of three signs in the same element is called a triplicity. Ptolemy gives each triplicity its own rulers, one for the day and one for the night.
In chapter eighteen, he assigns the fire signs to the Sun by day and to Jupiter by night. He leaves Mars out, even though Mars rules Aries. His reason is that Mars does not belong to the Sun’s team, the group of planets old astrologers linked to the day.
Why does this matter for a Moon match? The Moon is the light of the night. In the old system, she leads the planets of the night team. So when an old reader looks at two Moons in fire, the night ruler of fire comes first to mind. That ruler is Jupiter, the planet that owns Sagittarius.
Put simply, the Sagittarius Moon sits in the home of the planet that rules the whole fire group at night. The Aries Moon sits in the home of Mars, a planet Ptolemy kept out of that role. It is a neat old detail. It hints at why readers cast the Sagittarius partner as the one who widens the view and the Aries partner as the one who pushes.
A lean toward full Moon births
Now for the measured part. The Moon’s phase depends on where it stands from the Sun.
- If your Moon sits in the same sign as your Sun, you were born near a new Moon.
- If your Moon sits in the sign opposite your Sun, you were born near a full Moon.
For a Sagittarius Moon, the same sign is Sagittarius, and the opposite sign is Gemini. We measured each case over every moment from the year 1600 to the year 2400.

The Aries Moon stays almost level, since Aries sits near the spring equinox. The Sagittarius Moon leans hard toward full Moons. Among all twelve Moon signs, only the Capricorn Moon leans further.
For the couple, the lean carries through. In 15.93 percent of Aries and Sagittarius Moon couples, at least one partner was born near a full Moon. In 15.52 percent, at least one was born near a new Moon. So in this pair, the full Moon partner is the more common of the two.
Why Sagittarius Moons lean this way
The cause is the Sun’s speed across the sky. Earth’s path around the Sun is a slight oval. We pass closest to the Sun in early January and farthest in early July. So the Sun seems to move fastest in the northern winter and slowest in the summer.
A Sagittarius Moon with a full Moon needs the Sun in Gemini, from late May to late June. The Sun moves slowly then, so it stays in Gemini longer, and more full Moons land in Sagittarius. A Sagittarius Moon with a new Moon needs the Sun in Sagittarius, in late November and December. The Sun moves fast then, so fewer new Moons land there.

How exact is the trine?
A trine by sign is not always a trine in degrees. Each sign spans 30 degrees. A Moon at 1 degree Aries and a Moon at 29 degrees Sagittarius are four signs apart, but only 92 degrees apart around the short way. That is near a square, the tense link of 90 degrees, not a trine.
The orb is how far from exact a link can be and still count. We measured the share of couples at each common orb.

So at the usual orb of 8 degrees, fewer than half of these couples have a true trine. About one couple in 28 has a square hiding under the trine instead. That happens only when the Aries Moon is early in its sign and the Sagittarius Moon is late. Ask for both exact degrees before you call the link easy.
Are you sure of both Moons?
The Moon moves fast. It spends about 54.6 hours in a sign on average, and anywhere from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. It changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. On those days, a birth date alone gives two possible Moon signs.
Many free tools guess noon when you give no birth time. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign for 10.98 percent of people, about one in nine. With a noon guess for both partners, 20.75 percent of couples see the wrong Moon pair, about one in five. Only 31.45 percent of couples can know both Moons from their dates alone.
For this pair, one slip changes the whole reading. An Aries Moon could be a Pisces Moon, which turns the trine into a square. A Sagittarius Moon could be a Capricorn Moon, which does the same. The other two slips turn it into a quincunx. Check both birth times first.
How common is this pair?
Not rare. The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign, between 8.331 and 8.336 percent. So any pair of two different Moon signs turns up in about one couple in 72. Any pair of the same sign turns up in about one couple in 144. The tiny gaps between pairs are smaller than the gap between two careful methods, so we do not rank them.
What studies say
The largest test of sign matching we know of is by David Voas. In 2007, he looked at the 2001 census of England and Wales, with about 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of couples with the same sign came from errors in how dates were written down.
That test covers Sun signs, not Moon signs. No large test of Moon signs exists to our knowledge. So a fire trine promises nothing on its own.

How we measured it
We used two separate routes that share no code. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every Moon, Sun and sign change from January 1, 1600 to January 1, 2400, to within a tenth of a second. We then added up the exact time in each case, with no random draws.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the Moon and Sun every hour on a grid shifted by half an hour, or just over seven million moments. The two routes agreed to within 0.04 of a point on every Moon figure. Signs are tropical, which means they are tied to the seasons. Days and noon charts use Greenwich time.
