Sagittarius Moon and Sagittarius Moon compatibility starts with one simple fact. Both partners were born while the Moon crossed the same sign. The two Moons share an element, fire. They share a mode, mutable. They share a ruler, Jupiter. On paper, very little keeps them apart.
Yet the old books add a twist. The Moon holds no rank at all in Sagittarius. It is a guest there, not an owner. So this page is about two guests in the same house, with the same host. It is also about a small pattern we measured: this pair leans toward full moon births.
First, a plain note. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will fare. Read what follows as a way of looking, not as a forecast.
The pair in one table
| Question | Short answer. |
|---|---|
| Distance between the signs | None: same sign, a conjunction by sign. |
| Element and mode | Both fire, both mutable. |
| Kind of sign | Both day signs, which Ptolemy calls masculine. |
| Moon strength | No major rank in Sagittarius, for either Moon. |
| Ruler | Jupiter, for both Moons. |
| How close are the Moons? | Within 8 degrees in 46 percent of couples. |
| How common is the pair? | About 1 couple in 144, like any same-sign pair. |
| Full moon births | At least one in 16.17 percent of couples, 4th of 78 pairs. |
What a Moon sign means
Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your inner weather. It shows what calms you, what upsets you, and how you care for others. Your Sun sign is how you shine. Your Moon sign is how you rest.
Two Moons are compared by counting the signs between them. Here the count is zero. Astrologers call two planets in the same sign a conjunction by sign. Our moon sign compatibility guide walks through every distance, from the same sign to the opposite one.
Two guests in Jupiter’s house
Tradition gives each planet a few special signs. The home, or domicile, is the sign a planet rules. The exaltation is where it is an honored guest. Across from these sit the exile and the fall. For the Moon, the home is Cancer and the exaltation is Taurus. Its exile is Capricorn and its fall is Scorpio.
Sagittarius is none of these. A planet with no major rank in a sign is called peregrine, from a Latin word for a traveler. It gets no boost and no harm. The Moon does own one small slice of the sign. The middle ten degrees are a Moon face, also called a decan. That is a minor seat, and the old authors gave it little weight.
So each partner carries a traveling Moon. In the old reading, such a Moon settles by moving. It finds calm in a new road, a new idea, or an open sky. Our page on the Moon in Sagittarius looks at this seat on its own.
Two peregrine Moons have no rank to trade. Neither partner starts from a strong seat, and neither starts from a weak one. That makes the pair even. It also means neither Moon can lean on the other for a sense of home.
One host for both Moons
Each Moon answers to the ruler of its sign. Jupiter rules Sagittarius. In the old scheme, Jupiter is the planet of faith, growth, teaching and good luck. It is one of the two benefics, the planets the old books call kind. The other is Venus.
Sagittarius is Jupiter’s day house. Pisces is its night house. So both Moons hand their moods to Jupiter, in the same house. When one partner feels low, the cure the other reaches for is the one they would want. That might be a trip, a joke, a plan, or a talk about big ideas.
This is the gift of a shared host. Both know what hope looks like. Both believe the next chapter can be better. The risk is the same gift turned around. When both reach for the horizon, nobody stays with the hard feeling in the room.
Fire and a restless mode
Fire is the element of heat, drive and spirit. Fire Moons feel fast and show it. A fire Moon wants to act on a feeling, not sit with it.
Mutable is the mode of change. Mutable signs close each season. Sagittarius ends autumn, just before the winter solstice. A mutable Moon adapts. It bends with events and lets go of plans with ease.
Put fire and mutable together, twice, and you get two Moons that crave room. In a good week, that feels like freedom. Both give the other space without being asked. In a hard week, it feels like drift. Plans pile up, and nobody lands them.
Sagittarius forms a fire trine with two other signs. One pair is covered in our page on Aries Moon and Sagittarius Moon compatibility. The other is in Leo Moon and Sagittarius Moon compatibility. Across the wheel sits Gemini, which our page on Gemini Moon and Sagittarius Moon compatibility explores.
Same sign does not mean close
A conjunction by sign is not always a conjunction by degree. Each sign spans 30 degrees. One partner could have the Moon at 2 degrees Sagittarius, and the other at 28 degrees. They share a sign, but they sit 26 degrees apart. Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle, called an orb.
| Orb allowed | Share of couples with a true conjunction. |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees | 19 percent of couples. |
| Within 6 degrees | 36 percent of couples. |
| Within 8 degrees | 46 percent of couples. |
| Within 10 degrees | 56 percent of couples. |
These shares hold for every same-sign pair, because the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. So fewer than half of Sagittarius Moon couples have a close conjunction at an 8 degree orb. For the rest, the shared sign is the link, not the degree.
Why this pair leans toward full moons
Here is a small pattern that holds up. A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon in the sign across from the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.
| Sagittarius Moon births | Where the Sun sits | Share of all Sagittarius Moons. |
|---|---|---|
| New moon, by sign | Sun in Sagittarius | 7.96 percent. |
| Full moon, by sign | Sun in Gemini | 8.44 percent. |
The cause is the speed of the Sun. Earth is closest to the Sun in early January. So the Sun moves fastest in the winter months, including December, when it crosses Sagittarius. That leaves fewer days for the Moon to join it there. Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July. So the Sun moves slowly through Gemini in late spring. That leaves more days for the Moon to face it from Sagittarius.
In a couple, the two leans add up. 16.17 percent of Sagittarius Moon couples include at least one full moon birth. That is the 4th highest share of all 78 Moon pairs. Only 15.29 percent include at least one new moon birth, 75th of 78.
What does that mean in the old symbols? A full moon birth puts the Moon across from the Sun. Some astrologers read it as a person pulled between two sides of life. The data does not say how anyone feels. It only says where the Sun and Moon stood.
How common is the pair?
The Moon gives each sign almost the same share of its time. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent. So a couple who both have a Sagittarius Moon turns up about 1 time in 144. That is true of any same-sign pair. A pair of two different given signs turns up about 1 time in 72. We do not rank Moon pairs by how common they are. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.
Check both Moons first
The Moon moves fast. It spends about 54.6 hours in a sign on average, and anywhere from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. As a result, the Moon changes sign on 43.92 percent of days. For people born on those days, only the birth time tells the Moon sign.
Many free charts fill a missing birth time with noon. That guess names the wrong Moon sign for 10.98 percent of people, about one in nine. For a couple, two noon charts give the wrong Moon pair 20.75 percent of the time, about one couple in five. Only about 31 percent of couples have both Moons settled by their dates alone.
Say a noon chart gives you a Sagittarius Moon. If you were born early in the day, your Moon could still be in Scorpio. If you were born late, it could already be in Capricorn. Check your time before you read too much into the match.
Where the numbers come from
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time the Moon and the Sun changed sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second. It then added up the hours. The noon test used a chart cast at 12:00 UTC each day.
The second method used the Swiss Ephemeris, a separate set of star tables. It checked the Moon’s sign once an hour over the same eight centuries, on a grid offset by half an hour. That makes more than seven million checks. No random draws were used. The two methods agree within 0.04 points on every Moon figure here. All values use the tropical zodiac, as seen from Earth.
What the evidence says
The largest test of star-sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples in a 2007 paper called “Ten million marriages”. Sun signs had no effect on who married whom. A small excess of couples sharing a sign traced back to errors in the data. His test covered Sun signs only. No test of that size has been run on Moon signs.
So a shared sign is not a promise, and a peregrine Moon is not a flaw. They are symbols. Two Sagittarius Moons share a host and a hunger for room. The symbols show where that shared hope helps, and where it needs a place to land.
In Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos, some pairs of signs “behold” or “command” each other. Those ties link two different signs, so they do not apply to a same-sign pair. Our page on Sagittarius Moon and Aquarius Moon compatibility covers the one sign that beholds Sagittarius, read by whole sign.
Habits that suit two Sagittarius Moons
These follow the symbols. They are not rules.
- Both name one feeling out loud before they pitch a fix or a trip.
- Both pick one shared plan each month and see it through to the end.
- Each keeps some solo room, so the need for space never reads as a rejection.
- Both keep humor kind, since a joke that dodges a hurt only delays it.

Frequently asked questions
Are two Sagittarius Moons compatible?
Astrology reads them as a conjunction by sign under one ruler, Jupiter. Both want room and hope. No study has shown that Moon signs predict a couple’s future, so treat this as a lens.
Is the Moon strong in Sagittarius?
It is neither strong nor weak. The Moon has no major rank there, which the old books call peregrine. It owns only the middle ten degrees as a minor seat, called a face.
Who rules a Sagittarius Moon?
Jupiter, the planet of faith and growth. Sagittarius is Jupiter’s day house. So both Moons in this pair answer to the same host.
How common is a Sagittarius Moon couple?
About 1 random couple in 144. The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign, so every same-sign pair has the same odds.
Do I need a birth time to know my Moon sign?
On many days, yes. The Moon changes sign on 43.92 percent of days. A noon guess is wrong for about one person in nine, and for about one couple in five.
