Venus in Sagittarius and Venus in Sagittarius compatibility sounds like a match of twins. Venus is the planet of love and pleasure in astrology. Two people with Venus in the same sign share a love style, at least on paper. But the sky adds a surprise. Most of these couples do not share a Sun sign.
We checked eight centuries of sky, from 1600 to 2400. A person with Venus in Sagittarius can have the Sun in five different signs. Put two such people together and their Suns match only about one time in four. In the other three, one partner is a Scorpio and the other a Capricorn, or some other mix.

Same Venus, different Suns
Venus never strays far from the Sun. Seen from Earth, the widest gap between them is about 47 degrees. A sign is 30 degrees wide. So Venus can sit in the Sun’s sign, one sign away, or two signs away, and nowhere else. For Venus in Sagittarius, that leaves five Sun signs.

Add the five same-Sun rows and you get 24.0 percent. So about 1 couple in 4 shares both the Venus sign and the Sun sign. The other 3 in 4 share a Venus sign with two different Suns.
The spread can be wide. One partner can have the Sun in Libra and the other in Aquarius. Those Suns sit four signs apart, a trine. Yet both Venuses sit in Sagittarius. That case covers 1.76 percent of these couples.
Why does this matter? Many readers find this page because both partners are Sagittarius by Sun sign. That is a different couple. Only 5.5 percent of Sagittarius Venus couples are also a double Sagittarius Sun pair. Check the real charts before you read one as the other.
Two guests of Jupiter
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book I, chapter 17, he gives each planet its signs. Jupiter got Sagittarius and Pisces, the signs at a trine to the homes of the Sun and Moon. Venus got Taurus and Libra.
So in Sagittarius, Venus is a guest. It is not at home, not honored, and not in exile. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology in 1647, calls a planet with no rank peregrine, which means a wanderer. A peregrine planet takes its tone from its host. Here, the host is Jupiter.
In the old books, Jupiter is the greater benefic, the planet that does the most good. Venus is the lesser benefic. So in this couple, a kind planet lodges with a kinder one, twice. Jupiter stands for growth, faith, travel and a wide view. The Venus it hosts loves in that key: open, frank and on the move.

One point follows from this. Both Venuses answer to one host, so the state of Jupiter matters twice. Where is Jupiter in each chart? In its own sign, it makes a strong host. In a weak sign, the host has less to give. Our page on Jupiter in Sagittarius covers the host at home.
How rare is this couple?
Venus spends 8.23 percent of its time in Sagittarius. That ranks ninth of the twelve signs, a little below the flat share of 8.33 percent.
A same-sign couple can form only one way, so its chance is the share times itself. For Sagittarius, that comes to 0.68 percent, about 1 couple in 148. Among all 78 Venus pairs, only three are rarer. All three are same-sign pairs: Aquarius, Scorpio and Capricorn. Capricorn with Capricorn is the rarest, at about 1 couple in 155.
So this is a rare pair, but only by a small margin. Two different Venus signs pair twice as easily, because they can form two ways. That alone puts every same-sign pair near the bottom of the list.

How close are the two Venuses?
Two Venuses in one sign form a conjunction by sign. In degrees, they can be anywhere from 0 to 30 degrees apart. Astrologers allow a margin around an exact match, called an orb. With an 8 degree orb, a gap of 8 degrees or less counts.
We measured the real gaps, using the true spread of Venus inside the sign.

At 8 degrees, the Sagittarius pair scores 46.38 percent. That is the highest of all 78 Venus pairs. With Venus spread evenly across the sign, the figure would be 46.22 percent. So Venus bunches up a little inside Sagittarius, and the two partners land close a little more than chance alone. The gap is tiny. It does not change the main point. More than half of these couples do not have a conjunction in degrees.
A close gap matters to astrologers. Two Venuses within a few degrees are read as one taste in love, shown twice. A gap of 20 degrees is the same sign, but a looser echo.
Reading the pair the traditional way
In a chart, Venus shows what you find lovely and how you draw love in. Stephen Arroyo reads it as your sense of value. Liz Greene reads it as the image of love you carry. Robert Hand reads a conjunction as a blend. Its tone depends on what is blended.

Where the two Venuses meet
- A love of the open road. Travel, study and new places feed both.
- Frank talk. Both say what they think, and neither sulks for long.
- Room to breathe. Neither one clings, and neither one needs to be clung to.
- Good humor. Jupiter lends both a light, generous touch.
Where they rub
- Two restless hearts. Both want the next thing, and no one keeps the home base.
- Promise against follow-through. Jupiter says yes to a lot. Someone has to keep the list.
- Bluntness twice over. A frank word from each side can land harder than meant.
- Different Suns. Three in four of these couples have two different Sun signs, so the likeness stops at Venus.
The skill here is anchoring. One partner learns to stay put for a season. The other learns that a plan kept is also a kind of adventure.
What the evidence says
No study has tested Venus signs in couples at scale. The largest test of love signs used Sun signs. In 2007 the sociologist David Voas looked at the 2001 census of England and Wales. He studied about 10.3 million married couples. He found no link between Sun signs and who marries whom.
Voas did not test Venus. So treat this page as words for a talk about freedom and follow-through. It is not a verdict on the couple.
How we measured it
We used two separate routes over the years 1600 to 2400. Every moment counts the same. The zodiac is tropical, seen from the center of the Earth.
Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun changed sign, to within a tenth of a second. It then summed the time in each case, with no random draws. The spread of Venus inside the sign came from hourly steps, in bins of a tenth of a degree.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It placed Venus and the Sun once an hour, on a grid shifted by 30 minutes from the first. That gave 7,012,656 moments. The two routes agree to within 0.01 of a point on every Venus figure here.
The couple figures assume two people born at unrelated moments. Real couples are born close in time, so treat the odds as a guide to the sky.
