Venus in Sagittarius and Venus in Capricorn compatibility begins with a quirk of the calendar. The two signs sit side by side on the wheel. By the old rules, next-door signs are turned away from each other. Yet these two are the exception to that rule.
They meet at the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. A day with the Sun in late Sagittarius is as long as a day with the Sun in early Capricorn. Ptolemy saw that match and said such signs see each other. So this pair is next door, and still in view.

What a Venus sign shows
Venus in a birth chart shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. Its sign is the style. It is not the whole person, and it is not a score.

So one partner’s Venus answers to the giver, and the other’s to the keeper. That is the first thing to know about this pair.
Neighbors that see each other
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book I, he sorts pairs of signs into kinds. Some are linked by an aspect, a set angle on the wheel. Some are not.
In chapter 15 he names signs that behold each other. These are signs the same distance from one of the two solstice points. When the Sun is in either one, the days and nights run the same length. He lists Sagittarius with Capricorn among them.
In chapter 16 he names the signs that are disjunct, or alien. These are signs with no link at all. Signs next door would fall here. But Ptolemy says a pair is alien only if it has none of the links he lists before. Sagittarius and Capricorn have one. So they are not alien.
This makes them rare among next-door pairs. Only two such pairs sit on either side of a solstice. Sagittarius and Capricorn are the pair at midwinter. Gemini and Cancer are their twin at midsummer.
Two ways to read it
Astrologers read Ptolemy’s rule in two ways. Frank Robbins, who made the standard English version, notes both.
The first reading works by whole signs. Every Sagittarius Venus sees every Capricorn Venus, at any degree. On this view, all couples with this pair share the link.
The second reading works by degrees. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology, uses mirror points called antiscia. Each degree has a twin on the far side of the solstice. Venus at 10 degrees Sagittarius mirrors 20 degrees Capricorn. The two degrees in each twin always add up to 30.
On this view, the link is real only when the degrees match. We counted how many couples meet that test. Within 1 degree, 6.56 percent of couples have mirrored Venus positions. Within 3 degrees, 19.02 percent do.
So the whole-sign reading says yes for every couple. The degree reading says yes for about 1 couple in 15, at a tight orb. Both are old and both are in use. Ask which one your astrologer follows.
The angle between them
Signs one apart form a 30-degree angle. Modern astrologers call it a semi-sextile. Ptolemy did not count it. His aspects were the conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition. The 30-degree angle was added much later as a minor aspect.
The sign pair only sets a range. The real gap between two Venus positions runs from 0 to 60 degrees. So we measured the true angle across all couples with this pair.

So fewer than half form a tight semi-sextile at 8 degrees. That share is close to the same for every Venus pair.
A few couples form a major aspect across the sign line instead. A late Sagittarius Venus can sit right next to an early Capricorn Venus. That is a conjunction in degrees, the two at one spot. The far ends can reach a sextile, 60 degrees apart. At an 8-degree orb, 7.04 percent of couples have one of these. For them, the degrees tell a stronger story than the signs.
How rare is this Venus pair?
Venus does not spend the same time in each sign. We timed every Venus sign change from 1600 to 2400 and summed the days.

Take two people born at random moments. The chance that one has Venus in Sagittarius and the other Venus in Capricorn is 1.32 percent. That is about one couple in 76.
There are 78 ways to pair Venus signs. This pair ranks 64th. The most common mix, Taurus with Cancer, reaches 1.48 percent. The gap is small. The point is only that the one-in-twelve rule is not quite right.
Which Sun signs come with it
From Earth, Venus never strays far from the Sun. On our scan the widest gap was 47.28 degrees. A sign is 30 degrees wide. So Venus sits in your Sun sign or in one of the two signs on each side.
That rule limits who can have each Venus. Here is the Sun sign mix for each one.

Look at the top line of each column. The biggest group of Venus in Sagittarius people are Scorpio Suns. The biggest group of Venus in Capricorn people are Aquarius Suns.
So the single likeliest setup is a surprise. The Sagittarius Venus belongs to a Scorpio Sun, and the Capricorn Venus to an Aquarius Sun. That covers 8.45 percent of couples with this pair. Neither partner then has a Sun in either Venus sign.
Now group the Sun pairs without caring who holds which Venus. A Sagittarius Sun with a Capricorn Sun is the most common mix, at 13.69 percent. Most of that comes from a swap. The Sagittarius Sun holds the Capricorn Venus, and the Capricorn Sun holds the Sagittarius Venus. The swap covers 8.23 percent of couples. The plain match covers only 5.45 percent.
One more count sums it up. In 58.74 percent of these couples, neither partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. So you cannot read this Venus pair off two Sun signs. You need both birth charts.
Where Venus stands in each sign
Traditional astrology ranks a planet in each sign. These ranks are called dignities. The top ranks are home and exaltation, a sign of honor. The low ranks are exile and fall.
Venus is at home in Taurus and Libra, and exalted in Pisces. It is in exile in Aries and Scorpio, and falls in Virgo. Sagittarius and Capricorn hold none of those ranks. Lilly calls a planet with no rank peregrine, a wanderer or guest.
The old tables add smaller ranks, and here the two signs part ways. In a daytime chart, Venus rules the earth signs, Capricorn included. That rank is called triplicity. Venus in Sagittarius has no such claim. Each sign gives Venus a short run of degrees called its terms. The exact run differs from one old table to the next.
So neither Venus holds a major rank. The Capricorn one keeps a small daytime claim. The Sagittarius one is a guest of Jupiter, a friendly host by the old books.
How the two styles meet
Here the numbers stop and the reading starts. What follows is how astrologers read these styles. It is a lens, not a finding.
Fire and earth, in Stephen Arroyo’s reading of the elements, want different proof. Fire trusts the spark and the open road. Earth trusts what it can touch and keep.
So the Sagittarius Venus says yes with a trip, a laugh or a big idea. The Capricorn Venus says yes with a plan and a promise kept. Each can read the other’s way of love as too loose or too slow.
The modes add a second layer. Sagittarius is a mutable sign, one that adapts at the end of a season. Capricorn is a cardinal sign, one that starts a season. One bends, and one begins. On our count, this is the only pair of its kind among all 78. No other pair joins fire and earth one sign apart with a mutable and a cardinal sign.
Read through Ptolemy’s lens, the shared day length gives them a bridge. They stand on either side of midwinter, and they face each other. Jupiter’s warmth meets Saturn’s form. A couple can use this as a prompt. What does each of us count as proof of love?
What the evidence says about sign matches
David Voas, a British researcher, tested sign matches in 2007. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales, with 10.3 million married couples. He found no link between Sun signs and who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from form errors, not from the stars.
His test was on Sun signs, not Venus signs. No large test of Venus pairs exists. So treat this page as a map of old ideas and real sky counts. It is not a verdict on a couple.
How we measured it
We used two separate routes over the years 1600 to 2400. Every moment counts the same.
Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each Venus and Sun sign change to within a tenth of a second. It then summed the time in each sign, with no random draws.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It placed Venus once an hour, on a grid shifted by 30 minutes from the first. That gave 7,012,656 moments. The two routes agree to within 0.01 points on every Venus figure.
Degree shares use the true spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. They assume two people born at unrelated moments. The Ptolemy points come from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 16.
