The Sun spends less time in Capricorn than in any other sign. I measured it: 29.45 days, against 30.44 if the twelve were equal. That makes the Capricorn sign the rarest of the twelve, and the reason sits in the shape of Earth’s orbit.
Pair it with Aquarius, the sign next door, and you get the rarest mix of two signs in US births, as our guide to Capricorn and Aquarius compatibility shows.
Paired with Leo, the most common sign in US births, it still lands close to an even split, as our page on Leo and Capricorn compatibility counts.
There is a second problem, and it is worse. Google, Britannica and every big astrology site print the same date range: December 22 to January 19. I checked that range against the real place of the Sun for 33,238 days in a row, from 1940 to 2030. If you were born on January 20, that table calls you an Aquarius. In 45 of the 91 years I checked, you were a Capricorn. That is 49 percent. A coin toss.
So this is the rarest sign, with one border that fails half the time. This page gives you the dates that hold up, the traits, and three counts you can check. Our wider guide to all twelve zodiac signs runs the same method across the year. This page goes deep on one sign.
The Capricorn sign is the shortest season of the twelve
The twelve signs are equal slices of sky. Each one covers 30 degrees. They are not equal slices of time.
Earth’s path around the Sun is an ellipse, not a circle. Our planet runs faster when it is close in and slower when it is far out. From here, the Sun looks like it hurries through some signs and dawdles through others.
I timed every crossing from 1600 to 2400, the site’s reference window, by two separate routes, astronomy-engine and the Swiss Ephemeris. Here is the whole zodiac, ranked from the shortest solar season to the longest.
| Rank from shortest solar season to longest | Name of the zodiac sign | Mean length of the season in days | Share of the whole year |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 of 12 | Capricorn | 29.446 days | 8.062 percent. |
| 2 of 12 | Sagittarius | 29.557 days | 8.092 percent. |
| 3 of 12 | Aquarius | 29.592 days | 8.102 percent. |
| 4 of 12 | Scorpio | 29.899 days | 8.186 percent. |
| 5 of 12 | Pisces | 29.961 days | 8.203 percent. |
| 6 of 12 | Libra | 30.389 days | 8.320 percent. |
| 7 of 12 | Aries | 30.462 days | 8.340 percent. |
| 8 of 12 | Virgo | 30.900 days | 8.460 percent. |
| 9 of 12 | Taurus | 30.964 days | 8.478 percent. |
| 10 of 12 | Leo | 31.292 days | 8.567 percent. |
| 11 of 12 | Gemini | 31.330 days | 8.578 percent. |
| 12 of 12 | Cancer | 31.451 days | 8.611 percent. |
Capricorn wins by a nose. It beats Sagittarius by two and a half hours. It beats Cancer, at the far end, by two full days.
That two-day gap is measured from the other end as well, in the guide to the Cancer sign and its record-long season.
Our guide to the Sagittarius sign works through that second shortest season of the twelve.
Two checks on that table. The twelve lengths add to 365.243 days. The tropical year is 365.2422 days, so the sum is out by under a minute. And the two routes agree on every row to within a ten-thousandth of a day.
So there are fewer Capricorns alive than there are people of any other sign. The gap against Cancer is 6.8 percent. It is small, and it is real.
In US birth records the gap grows wider still, and our page on Virgo and Capricorn compatibility shows how the holiday week adds to it.
Why the Sun hurries through this one sign
Here is the cause, and it is a fact of orbits rather than a claim about people.
Earth reaches its closest point to the Sun once a year. That point is called perihelion. Our planet moves at its fastest there, so the Sun appears to shift along the sky at its fastest too.
I looked up the date of perihelion for all 91 years. It fell on January 1 six times, January 2 in 26 years, January 3 in 27, January 4 in 29, and January 5 in three. It never once left that five day window.
Now put that beside the dates. The Sun sits in Capricorn from about December 21 to about January 20. Perihelion lands inside Capricorn season every single year, without fail.
That is the whole story. The one sign that always holds the fastest point of our orbit is the one sign the Sun clears quickest. Sagittarius and Aquarius sit on either side, which is why they come second and third.
Capricorn dates: what the sky says, not what the table says
The Sun does not move by the calendar. It crosses into a sign at a clock moment, and that moment shifts from year to year. A printed border hides that shift.
Here is where the start of Capricorn actually fell across those 91 years. The ingress is the exact second the Sun crosses the line.
| Calendar date the Sun entered Capricorn | Number of years out of the 91 I checked |
|---|---|
| December 21 | 43 years. |
| December 22 | 48 years. |
Two dates, almost half and half. The far end of the season is messier.
| Calendar date the Sun left Capricorn | Number of years out of the 91 I checked |
|---|---|
| January 19 | 7 years. |
| January 20 | 77 years. |
| January 21 | 7 years. |
The honest range is this, for births from 1940 to 2030, in New York time as in Universal Time. The Sun enters on December 21 or 22, and it leaves on January 19, 20 or 21. From 2012 to 2051 the start falls on December 21 every year in New York time, and December 20 starts appear from 2052. The moment of entry drifts across a window of 33 hours, and the moment of exit across 34.
Born on January 20? Read this part before anything else
One birth date carries almost all of the damage here. Here is how the common table scores on each edge day.
| Birth date in question | Sign the common table gives you | Sign you were really born under, in the years it fails | Share of the 91 years the table gets it wrong |
|---|---|---|---|
| January 20 | Aquarius | Capricorn | 45 years, or 49 percent. |
| December 22 | Capricorn | Sagittarius | 8 years, or 9 percent. |
| December 21 | Sagittarius | Capricorn | 5 years, or 5 percent. |
| January 19 | Capricorn | It never fails on this day. | 0 years, or 0 percent. |
Read the first row twice. The table hands January 20 to Aquarius. The Sun was still in Capricorn in 45 of the 91 years I checked. So the sign that is already the rarest also gets robbed of a day it owns half the time.
Match two people from this rare sign and you get the rarest couple of all, as our page on Capricorn and Capricorn compatibility explains.
There is a sharper number behind that one. On January 20, the Sun changed sign during the day itself in 77 of the 91 years. On those days no date table can be right or wrong. There is no single answer for the whole day. The hour of birth decides, and nothing else can.
January Capricorns face a second border as well, because the Lunar New Year never comes before January 21, as our guide to Chinese zodiac signs shows with the start date of every year.
There is no such thing as being half Capricorn and half Aquarius. The Sun stood in one sign at the minute you were born. Get your birth hour and your birth place, and the answer is exact.
The other side of that same border is covered in our guide to the Aquarius sign, which measures how far the modern ruler of that sign really is from home.
Saturn rules this sign, and nobody has ever taken it away
A ruling planet is the body the old writers put in charge of a sign. Capricorn has one ruler, and it is Saturn.
That sounds dull until you compare it with the neighbours. Scorpio belonged to Mars for eighteen centuries, then got handed to Pluto after 1930. Aquarius belonged to Saturn, then got handed to Uranus. Pisces went from Jupiter to Neptune. Three signs were reassigned in living memory.
Capricorn was not. Claudius Ptolemy gives Saturn charge of Capricorn in the Tetrabiblos, written in Alexandria around 150 AD. Vettius Valens works the same rulership through the case charts in his Anthology in the same century. William Lilly still prints it in Christian Astrology in 1647. Modern books print it now. The chain is unbroken.
So when you read a Capricorn description, ancient and modern sources are pointing at the same planet. That is not true of Scorpio, and it is why our guide to the Scorpio sign has to argue two cases at once. Here there is only one case.
One detail worth knowing. Saturn holds two signs, and they do different jobs. The old scheme gives each planet a day house and a night house. Capricorn is the night house, and Aquarius is the day house. Capricorn sits directly opposite Cancer, which belongs to the Moon, so it lands on the night half of the circle. Our guide to Saturn in your chart covers what the planet does once you find it.
Saturn also moves slowest here, and our page on Saturn in Capricorn gives the dates of every stay from 1900 to 2100.
By day, Saturn governs the air signs too, Gemini among them, and our page on Gemini and Capricorn compatibility follows that link.
Modern writers such as Liz Greene and Stephen Arroyo kept Saturn and changed the reading. The old books treat Saturn as limit and hardship. Greene reads the same limit as the thing that builds a person. Same planet, warmer language.
Mars is exalted here, and Jupiter is at its weakest
This is the part almost no page explains, and it does more work than any trait list.
The old writers scored each planet by the sign it sits in. A planet in its own sign is at home. A planet in its exaltation is a guest of honour, strong but not on home ground. The opposite spot is called the fall, where the planet is least at ease. Ptolemy sets the whole scheme out in the Tetrabiblos.
| Planet and the score it gets in Capricorn | Name of that condition in the old books | What it points to in a reading |
|---|---|---|
| Saturn in Capricorn | Its own night house | Structure, patience and the long game, at full strength. |
| Mars in Capricorn | Exaltation, at the 28th degree | Drive that is aimed and paced rather than hot. |
| Jupiter in Capricorn | Fall | Growth and luck get held back and asked to prove themselves. |
| The Moon in Capricorn | Detriment | Feeling kept under guard, because the Moon wants Cancer. |
Look at what that adds up to. Saturn at home and Mars at its guest of honour rank. Jupiter, the planet of easy growth, at its weakest point in the whole circle.
That is the Capricorn reputation, written in the scoring system a thousand years before anyone wrote a listicle. Effort is strong here. Luck is not. A Capricorn gets there by working, because the part of the chart that hands out free wins is switched off in this sign.
Capricorn traits, read from the structure
Here is the picture this site uses. A birth chart is a house with twelve rooms. Each room covers one area of life: money, work, love, home. The planets are the furniture. Wherever a planet sits, it furnishes that room.
Three things set the Capricorn furniture. The element is earth. The modality is cardinal. The room is the tenth.
Earth, in the old grouping, means practical and slow to waste effort. Cardinal means a sign that starts things: the four cardinal signs open the four seasons, and Capricorn opens winter at the solstice. Put those together and you get a starter that builds rather than a starter that sparks. Our guides to the earth element and the cardinal modality go further on both.
The tenth room is the one this sign is tied to. It covers career, public standing and reputation: what you are known for outside your front door. The tenth house has its own guide here.
Work forward from those three and the trait list stops being a set of adjectives.
| Capricorn trait as it is usually named | Where the old reading gets it from |
|---|---|
| Ambitious | The tenth room. Career and public standing are its subject. |
| Disciplined | Saturn, the ruler, read as limit and rule. |
| Practical | The earth element, which the old writers tie to matter and use. |
| Starts hard things and finishes them | Cardinal earth. A starter that builds slowly. |
| Patient to the point of stubborn | Saturn again. Saturn is the slow planet of the seven. |
| Cool on the surface | The Moon is in detriment here, so feeling stays under guard. |
| Dry humour | The same guard, turned into a tool. |
| Hard on itself | Jupiter in fall. Nothing is granted, so nothing feels earned. |
The last two rows come from one cause. The wit and the self doubt are the same trait seen from two sides. Any page that sells you one as a strength and the other as a flaw has not read the structure.
Two longer portraits sit alongside this page: the Capricorn man and the Capricorn woman.
The planets a Capricorn is allowed to have
This is the part no competing page prints, and you can check every line of it.
Mercury and Venus circle closer to the Sun than we do. Seen from Earth, neither one ever strays far from it. Mercury stays inside a window of about 28 degrees. Venus stays inside about 47. That is why you catch Venus just after sunset or just before dawn, and never at midnight.
Now do the sum. The Sun crosses 30 degrees of Capricorn. Add Mercury’s narrow window to each end and Mercury is boxed into a short stretch of sky. Three signs fall inside it. The other nine are not rare. They are impossible.
Here is the split for every moment with the Sun in Capricorn over 800 years, from 1600 to 2400.
| Sign that Mercury can occupy for a Capricorn Sun | Share of Capricorn Suns, 1600 to 2400 |
|---|---|
| Mercury in Capricorn | 56.77 percent. |
| Mercury in Sagittarius | 26.47 percent. |
| Mercury in Aquarius | 16.76 percent. |
| The nine other signs, added together | 0 percent, at every moment. |
Nine signs at a flat zero. Mercury in Leo for a Capricorn Sun does not exist. Nor does Mercury in Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio or Pisces. The widest gap between Sun and Mercury in those 800 years was 24.67 degrees, which is where the orbit says it should be.
Mercury is the body the old writers tie to how a person thinks and speaks. So a Capricorn has one of three thinking styles, and the birth date alone narrows it down. Mercury in Capricorn, for 57 in every 100, means a mind that plans and states things plainly. Mercury in Sagittarius, for 26, means a wider, looser, funnier mind. Mercury in Aquarius, for 17, means a mind that goes sideways and argues from principle.
How close Mercury sits to the Sun matters too, and our page on the Sun in Capricorn counts how many Capricorns are born with Mercury lost in its glare.
Venus does the same trick with a wider window. Five signs are possible and seven score zero.
| Sign that Venus can occupy for a Capricorn Sun | Share of Capricorn Suns, 1600 to 2400 |
|---|---|
| Venus in Sagittarius | 29.17 percent. |
| Venus in Aquarius | 28.81 percent. |
| Venus in Capricorn | 23.15 percent. |
| Venus in Pisces | 9.71 percent. |
| Venus in Scorpio | 9.16 percent. |
| The seven other signs, added together | 0 percent, at every moment. |
Venus in Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo and Libra cannot happen for a Capricorn Sun. The widest Sun to Venus gap I measured was 47.27 degrees. Venus is the body the old writers tie to how a person loves. So a Capricorn loves in one of five styles, and no others are on the menu.
One honest note on that Venus table. Venus repeats its pattern against Earth on an eight year beat, so a short span of years does not sample it evenly. That is why I counted over 800 years. Sagittarius and Aquarius come out level at the top, less than half a point apart. Capricorn follows at 23 percent. So read those three as a group of near equals, each close to a quarter or more. Pisces and Scorpio each hold a little over 9 percent.
Mars sits outside our orbit, so it is free to go anywhere. All twelve signs turn up. The crowded end is a cluster of four, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Capricorn and Aquarius, each between 11 and 13 percent, and less than a point and a half apart. Call them level. The thin end is Cancer at 3.6 percent, then Gemini at 3.9 and Leo at 4.6. A Capricorn with Mars in Cancer is the rarest mix. Mars is in fall in Cancer, its weakest sign, and it is exalted in Capricorn.
Capricorn rising is one in twelve, and that is a coincidence
Your rising sign, also called the ascendant, is the slice of zodiac climbing over the horizon at the minute you were born. It needs your birth hour. It shifts one degree every four minutes.
People expect one in twelve here, which is 8.33 percent. For Capricorn that is close to what you get. For US births, 8.6 percent of Capricorn Suns also have Capricorn rising.
Now the check that makes it mean something. If babies were born evenly around the clock, Capricorn rising would take 8.07 percent of all US charts, and 8.07 percent of Capricorn Suns. That is no push at all. Real birth hours add a small one. US births bunch in the daytime, with a peak at 8 a.m. On a winter morning the rising sign sits close to the Sun’s own sign. So among Capricorn Suns the share climbs to 8.64 percent, against 7.93 percent for all US births. The push comes from the hospital clock, not from the Sun sign.
The matching answer for Scorpio is about one in ten, not one in twelve. Both results come from the same cause, and it has nothing to do with the Sun. Signs do not all climb the horizon at the same speed from the places where people live.
The old writers already knew this. They split the circle into signs of long ascension, which are Cancer through Sagittarius, and signs of short ascension, which run Capricorn through Gemini. Slow risers hang on the horizon and catch more births. My counts back them up: for US births, Scorpio rises for 10.3 percent of all charts, Aries for only 5.2.
Capricorn is the first of the short risers, so it sits on the boundary between the two groups. That is why it lands close to the average. The one in twelve is real, and it is luck of position rather than a rule. Our guide to the ascendant and your rising sign covers what it changes in a reading.
Capricorn compatibility, without the scoreboard
Take the Sun sign answer first, and take it quickly, because it is the weak one. The old pairing rules point Capricorn at the other earth signs, Taurus and Virgo, and at Scorpio and Pisces for warmth without fuss. They flag Aries and Libra as the hard ones, since three cardinal signs at right angles all want to lead. Cancer sits opposite, which reads as attraction and friction in one package.
Our page on Cancer and Capricorn compatibility shows why these two are the solstice signs, born hours of daylight apart.
Libra is a special case, since Saturn is exalted there, and our page on Libra and Capricorn compatibility counts how many US couples that square joins.
Scorpio has a tie of its own, since Mars rules it and is exalted in Capricorn, and our page on Scorpio and Capricorn compatibility counts how many charts carry it.
Pisces, where Venus is exalted, has a tie too, and our guide to Pisces and Capricorn compatibility counts the couples who carry both honors.
Now the stronger answer, and this is where my counts earn their keep. For any Capricorn you meet, Venus sits in one of five signs and Mercury in one of three. That is fifteen pairings. Those two placements do far more work in a real relationship than the Sun does, and both come from the birth date alone.
A Capricorn with Venus in Aquarius wants space and a friendship underneath. A Capricorn with Venus in Scorpio wants depth and proof. Same Sun sign. A different person to live with. Sun sign compatibility lists cannot see that difference, which is why they keep clashing with each other.
Capricorn at a glance
Here is the frame, with the questions people ask most.
| Fact about the Capricorn sign | What the answer is |
|---|---|
| Element that Capricorn belongs to | Earth, shared with Taurus and Virgo. Not water, and not fire. |
| Modality, meaning how the sign handles change | Cardinal, which reads as starting things. |
| Position in the order of the zodiac | Tenth of twelve. |
| Stretch of sky the sign covers | 270 to 300 degrees of ecliptic longitude. |
| Ruling planet, old and modern alike | Saturn, with no change in either era. |
| Symbol and the animal behind it | The Sea Goat, a goat with a fish tail, from the Latin for horned goat. |
| Season in the northern half of the world | It opens at the winter solstice, the shortest day. |
| Share of the year the Sun spends in it | 8.06 percent, the smallest share of the twelve. |
One more thing the solstice explains. Capricorn starts at the darkest point of the northern year, when the Sun is at its lowest and the days begin to grow again. The old reading of this sign as endurance that turns a corner comes straight from that.
How I measured all of this
Here is the method, so you can check it rather than trust me.
For the dates I used an ephemeris. An ephemeris is a table of where each body in the sky sits at a given moment, worked out from the laws of motion. I asked it for the Sun’s place once a day for every day from 1940 to 2030. That is 33,238 days. I then set each answer beside the printed table and counted the days where the two disagree.
For the crossing moments I narrowed each one down to the second, by halving the interval over and over.
For the planet counts I checked the sky every 72 minutes from 1600 to 2400, a span of 800 years, and kept every moment with the Sun in Capricorn. Then I timed each sign change to the second with a second library, Swiss Ephemeris, and the two runs agree. I used the tropical zodiac, the one Western astrology uses, which ties the signs to the equinox rather than to the star patterns.
For the rising sign I used US births. Each county counts by its Census population, with its real time zone and daylight saving time. Each birth hour counts by its share in the 2024 CDC birth records, month by month and weekday by weekday. I ran every day from 1940 to 2030, and checked a sample of days with Swiss Ephemeris. The ascendant depends on latitude and on the hour, so both had to be real.
Every set of shares here adds to 100. I did not use a short span of years, because Venus and Mars repeat their patterns slowly and a few decades would tip the order. Where signs sit close together, like the top three Venus signs and the top four Mars signs, I print them as groups instead of rankings.
One last point of honesty. Astrology is not a science, and I will not dress it up as one. What I measured here is the astronomy underneath it, which is exact. What the old writers read into those positions is a symbolic language with a long written record, and that is a different kind of claim.
Frequently asked questions about the Capricorn sign
What are the real Capricorn dates?
For births from 1940 to 2030, in New York time, the Sun enters Capricorn on December 21 or 22 depending on the year, and leaves on January 19, 20 or 21. The fixed range of December 22 to January 19 that most sites print is a rounding. It gives the wrong sign to anyone born on January 20 in 49 percent of years.
Is a Capricorn a water sign?
No. Capricorn is an earth sign, alongside Taurus and Virgo. The confusion comes from the symbol, the Sea Goat, which has a fish tail. The tail is part of a Babylonian myth. It has nothing to do with the element.
What planet rules the Capricorn sign?
Saturn, in both the ancient and the modern scheme. Ptolemy set it down around 150 AD and nobody has moved it since. Capricorn is Saturn’s night house, and Aquarius is its day house.
What type of person is a Capricorn?
Cardinal earth ruled by Saturn, tied to the tenth house of career and reputation. That reads as ambitious, patient, practical and slow to show feeling. Mars is exalted here and Jupiter is in fall, which is the old way of saying that effort is strong in this sign and easy luck is not.
Which signs is a Capricorn most compatible with?
By Sun sign alone, the old rules point to Taurus, Virgo, Scorpio and Pisces, and flag Aries, Libra and Cancer as the harder ones. The better answer comes from Venus, which for a Capricorn Sun can only be in Sagittarius, Aquarius, Capricorn, Pisces or Scorpio. That placement shapes how they love far more than the Sun does.
Can a Capricorn have Venus in Leo?
No. It is impossible, not rare. Venus never sits more than about 47 degrees from the Sun as seen from Earth, and Leo is far outside that window from Capricorn. The same rules out Venus in Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Virgo and Libra.
I was born on January 20. Am I a Capricorn or an Aquarius?
You need your birth hour to know. Across the 91 years I checked, someone born on January 20 was still a Capricorn in 45 of them, or 49 percent. The Sun crossed the line during that day in 77 of the 91 years, so the date on its own settles nothing.
Why is the Capricorn sign the rarest?
Because Earth passes its closest point to the Sun in early January, every year without fail, and that point falls inside Capricorn season. Our planet moves fastest there, so the Sun clears this sign in 29.45 days on average. Cancer, at the opposite end of the orbit, takes 31.45.
Why is my Capricorn friend nothing like the description?
Because the Sun is one body out of ten that a full reading uses. Knowing the Sun sign tells you which room holds one chair. It says nothing about the other nine pieces of furniture, and nothing about which room the front door opens into. That last one is the rising sign, and it needs the birth hour.
When is my Saturn return if I am a Capricorn?
Saturn takes about 29 and a half years to circle the zodiac, so it comes back to its birth place near age 29 for everyone, whatever their Sun sign. Capricorns feel it talked about more, because Saturn is their ruler. Our guide to the Saturn return and when yours lands gives the exact dates.
