Leo and Capricorn compatibility is one of the most searched sign pairs in the US. Most pages answer with a score. This one starts with a count. Leo is the most common Sun sign in US births. Capricorn is the rarest. So I asked how the most common sign and the rarest one add up as a pair. The answer: about 1 random US pair in 73 is a Leo with a Capricorn. That is almost exactly what an even split of twelve signs would give.
Then I went back to the oldest book on the subject. It turns out that Leo and Capricorn mark the two ends of the half of the zodiac that the old books gave to the Sun. The ruler of one sign was built as the rival of the ruler of the other. Here is what that means, what it does not mean, and how each number was found.
First, what no chart can promise
Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that a Sun sign predicts whether a couple will last. The largest test I know of was run by David Voas, then a researcher at the University of Manchester, in 2007. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales, which holds the birth dates of more than 10 million married couples. He asked if some sign pairs marry more than chance allows, and if others marry less.
His answer was no. He also found why some raw counts looked odd. Too many couples shared a sign, because a clerk or a spouse had written the same birthday twice. Once he took out those errors, the table looked as random as real data gets. The Skeptical Inquirer reported his result in March 2008.
Here are the Leo and Capricorn cells from his corrected table, Table 7. It holds 9.5 million couples.
| Couple in the 2001 census | Found | Expected by chance | Gap. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leo wife, Capricorn husband. | 63,614 couples. | 63,810 couples. | 196 fewer. |
| Capricorn wife, Leo husband. | 63,126 couples. | 63,492 couples. | 366 fewer. |
| Both kinds together. | 126,740 couples. | 127,302 couples. | 0.4 percent fewer. |
The expected count is what you get if people choose partners with no regard to sign. Voas notes that with so many couples, any one cell can drift up to 450 above or below that count by pure chance. Both Leo and Capricorn cells sit inside that range. So Leos and Capricorns do not seek each other out, and they do not avoid each other.
This page reads the pair as a lens, not a forecast. The lens gives two partners words for how each one works. The two people decide the rest.
The most common sign meets the rarest
A Sun sign is the slice of the sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. But the slices do not last the same number of days. Earth moves fastest in early January, when it is closest to the Sun, so the Sun races through Capricorn in about 29.4 days. That is the shortest stay of the twelve, as our Capricorn sign page shows. In high summer Earth moves slower, and the Sun lingers in Leo for about 31.3 days.
US births are not flat through the year either. They peak in late summer and dip in winter. So Leo gets a long season and busy days. Capricorn gets a short season and quiet days. Both push the same way.
The same shortfall makes Taurus with Capricorn the rarest of the 12 trine pairs, as our page on Taurus and Capricorn compatibility shows.
I counted it with two public files of daily US births. Each day’s births were given to the Sun sign of that day. When the Sun changed sign during a day, I split that day’s births by the hours on each side.
| Question | Social Security file, 2000 to 2014 | Health Statistics file, 1994 to 2003. |
|---|---|---|
| Births in the file. | 62.2 million births. | 39.7 million births. |
| Share born with the Sun in Leo. | 8.96 percent, first of twelve. | 8.96 percent, first of twelve. |
| Share born with the Sun in Capricorn. | 7.63 percent, last of twelve. | 7.60 percent, last of twelve. |
| Chance a random pair is one Leo and one Capricorn. | 1.37 percent, or 1 pair in 73. | 1.36 percent, or 1 pair in 73. |
Why multiply by two? A pair can be a Leo woman with a Capricorn man, or the other way round. Both count. So the chance is two times the Leo share times the Capricorn share.
Now compare that with an even split. If every sign held one twelfth of births, any mixed pair would turn up once in 72 draws. Leo and Capricorn turn up once in 73. The Leo surplus and the Capricorn shortfall almost cancel out. The top sign and the bottom sign land in the middle as a pair.
Two more ways to picture the gap between them:
- For every 100 Capricorns born in the US, about 117 Leos are born.
- A day in Leo season sees about 5 percent more births than the average day. A day in Capricorn season sees about 5 percent fewer.
None of this is about love. It is about the shape of Earth’s orbit and the months when US couples conceive. But it answers a plain question that most sign pages skip: how common is this pair at all?
Five signs apart, and turned away
Place the twelve signs on a wheel. Count forward from Leo: Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn. That is five steps. Five slices of 30 degrees make 150 degrees.
Modern astrologers call this gap a quincunx. The word is Latin for five twelfths. Some books call it an inconjunct, which means not joined. The classic links between signs cut the circle into equal parts. The trine cuts it in three, the square in four, the sextile in six. A gap of 150 degrees does none of that. It leaves one side of the wheel bigger than the other.
What Ptolemy called such signs
Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. It is the oldest full textbook of Western astrology. I read Book 1 in the English version by Frank Robbins, from 1940. In chapter 16, Ptolemy names the signs that share no link at all. He calls them disjunct and alien. He says they are one sign apart or five signs apart. Of the five apart, he writes that they “divide the whole circle into unequal parts.”
Leo and Capricorn are five apart. So in his scheme they are disjunct. The later Greek tradition used a close idea, called aversion, which means turned away. Capricorn is the sixth sign counted from Leo. Leo is the eighth counted from Capricorn. The sixth and eighth places are the ones that do not see the first. Either way you count, the two signs face in different ways.
Do not read this as doom. In the old books, not seeing is not the same as fighting. A square is a clash in plain view. Aversion is more like two people who work in the same building on different floors. Nothing is wrong. They just have to take the stairs.
How many pairs have a true quincunx
A sign is a slice, so the label does not fix the angle. A Leo born on the first day of Leo and a Capricorn born on the last day of Capricorn have Suns about 180 degrees apart. A late Leo and an early Capricorn can be only about 120 degrees apart. The label says 150, but the real gap runs from about 120 to 180 degrees.
Astrologers only count an aspect when the angle is close to exact. An aspect is a set angle between two points in the sky. The leeway around it is called the orb. I weighted each degree of Leo and of Capricorn by real US births and asked what share of pairs sit within a given orb of 150 degrees.
| Orb allowed around 150 degrees | Share of Leo and Capricorn pairs with a true quincunx. |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees. | 19 percent of pairs. |
| Within 6 degrees. | 36 percent of pairs. |
| Within 8 degrees. | 47 percent of pairs. |
| Within 10 degrees. | 56 percent of pairs. |
These are the same shares that our pages on other pairs found. That is expected: the width of a sign sets them, not the pair. What changes here is the orb. The quincunx is a minor aspect, and many astrologers allow it only 2 or 3 degrees. At 3 degrees, just one Leo and Capricorn pair in five has a real Sun quincunx. The other four share the label, not the angle.
The birthdays behind a real quincunx
For an exact quincunx, both Suns must sit at the same degree of their signs. From one degree of Leo to the same degree of Capricorn, the Sun takes between 150.2 and 152.1 days. Counted the other way, from Capricorn round to Leo, it takes between 213.2 and 215.0 days.
Here is a real example. In 2026, the Sun reached 15 degrees of Leo on August 7, New York time. It reached 15 degrees of Capricorn on January 5 of the same year. A Leo born on August 7 and a Capricorn born on January 5 have the exact angle the books describe, whatever the birth years. A Leo born on July 23 and a Capricorn born on January 18 sit close to 180 degrees apart. That is an opposition in size, not a quincunx.
What else the old lists say
Ptolemy sorts the signs in several more ways. For this pair, each one comes up empty.
| Old way to sort the signs | Leo | Capricorn. |
|---|---|---|
| Element. | Fire, hot and dry. | Earth, cold and dry. |
| Mode. | Fixed, a sign that holds. | Cardinal, a sign that starts. |
| Gender in the old books. | Masculine. | Feminine. |
| Rulers of its element, by day and by night. | The Sun, then Jupiter. | Venus, then the Moon. |
| Season in the north. | High summer. | The start of winter. |
The two signs share only one quality in the old theory: both are dry. They share no element, no mode and no gender. Ptolemy also lists signs that command and obey, which sit the same distance from Aries or Libra. Leo and Capricorn are not such a pair.
Signs that behold each other: two readings
In chapter 15, Ptolemy says two signs behold each other when they sit the same distance from the same solstice sign. When the Sun is in either one, the days have the same length. Readers take this in two ways.
Read by whole signs, as Robbins does in his note 83, the pairs are Gemini and Leo, Taurus and Virgo, Aries and Libra, Pisces and Scorpio, and Aquarius and Sagittarius. Cancer and Capricorn are left without a mate. So Leo beholds Gemini, and Capricorn beholds no sign at all.
Our page on Gemini and Leo compatibility measures how well that whole sign pairing fits the true length of the day.
Read by degrees, as William Lilly does in Christian Astrology in 1647, each point has a mirror point across the solstice line. Lilly calls them antiscia. The mirror of Leo is Taurus. The mirror of Capricorn is Sagittarius. Under both readings, Leo and Capricorn do not behold each other.
The Sun and Saturn: rivals by design
Each sign has a ruling planet, like a host who owns a house. The Sun rules Leo. Saturn rules Capricorn, and Aquarius too. Here the old books do tie the pair, but as a pair of rivals.
The two ends of the Sun’s half
In chapter 17, Ptolemy explains why each planet got its signs. Cancer and Leo are the signs of high summer, the ones closest to the top of the sky in the north. So they went to the two lights: Leo to the Sun, Cancer to the Moon. Then, he writes, the half of the circle “from Leo to Capricorn” was taken as the Sun’s half.
The other planets were then placed in the order of their spheres, as the Greeks saw them, from the nearest to the farthest. Count from Leo through the Sun’s half. Virgo goes to Mercury. Libra goes to Venus. Scorpio goes to Mars. Sagittarius goes to Jupiter. And Capricorn, the last sign of the Sun’s half, goes to Saturn, the slowest planet, which Ptolemy calls the one farthest from the lights. So Leo and Capricorn are the two ends of the same row. One holds the Sun. The other holds the planet set farthest from it.
Ptolemy gives Saturn its signs because they are “cold and wintry,” the reverse of the Sun’s heat. He adds that Saturn’s signs face the homes of the Sun and Moon across the wheel, and that this facing “is not consistent with beneficence.” Aquarius faces Leo. Capricorn faces Cancer.
Opposite in rank as well
Chapter 19 goes further. Each planet has a sign of exaltation, a place of high honor, and a sign of depression, later called its fall. The Sun is exalted in Aries, where the days start to grow, and falls in Libra. Ptolemy then says Saturn took the reverse, “in order to have a position opposite to the sun, as also in the matter of their houses.” So Saturn is exalted in Libra and falls in Aries.
Lilly adds one more rank. A planet is in detriment, which means out of place, in the sign across from its home. Saturn’s home Aquarius faces Leo, so Saturn is in detriment in Leo. And the Sun holds none of the three main ranks in Capricorn: not home, not element, not exaltation. In those main ranks, neither ruler has a foothold in the other’s sign.
Yet on the same side
There is one twist, and it softens the picture. The old books split the planets into two teams, called sects: one for the day and one for the night. In chapter 18, Ptolemy puts Saturn in the sect of the Sun. Saturn rules the air signs by day for that reason. So the two rulers are rivals in rank, but they play for the same team.
The modern astrologer Liz Greene, in her 1976 book on Saturn, reads the planet less as a villain and more as a teacher of limits. In that light, a Sun that wants to shine and a Saturn that wants to last are two halves of one daylight task.
Ruler at home: all or one in ten
One more contrast sits in the charts themselves. The Sun is always in the Sun sign, so every Leo has the ruler of Leo at home. Our Leo sign page counts it: 100 percent of Leo charts. Saturn moves on its own clock. Over 27 full laps of Saturn, from 1613 to 2408, only 10.15 percent of Capricorns have Saturn in Capricorn. So a Leo always carries the ruler in the sign. Nine Capricorns in ten carry it somewhere else, and that sign colors how they build and wait.
Saturn’s other home, Aquarius, sits straight across from Leo, and our guide to Leo and Aquarius compatibility covers that opposition.
No shared Venus, no shared Mercury
Venus orbits closer to the Sun than Earth does. From here, it never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. Mercury never strays more than about 28 degrees. Those limits box in each partner’s inner planets.
- A Leo can have Venus only in Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo or Libra.
- A Capricorn can have Venus only in Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius or Pisces.
- A Leo can have Mercury only in Cancer, Leo or Virgo.
- A Capricorn can have Mercury only in Sagittarius, Capricorn or Aquarius.
The lists never overlap. Signs five apart are too far for either planet to bridge. So a Leo and a Capricorn can never share a Venus sign or a Mercury sign. Their tastes and their ways of talking always start from different signs. A pair three signs apart, such as Libra and Capricorn, can share two Venus signs. This pair can share none.
The Venus pair for these two signs is a separate question. People with Venus in Leo and people with Venus in Capricorn are never born in the same month, as our page on Leo and Capricorn Venus placements shows with dates.
How the pair can play out day to day
Here the page turns from counts to tradition. What follows is how astrologers read the two signs. Treat it as a set of images to test against your own life, not as facts about any person.
What each partner brings
Leo is a fixed fire sign. Fire means warmth, pride and a wish to be seen. Fixed means it holds its course. A Leo partner shows care out loud. Praise, gifts, a big plan for the weekend. Loyalty that is said, then kept.
Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign. Earth means the concrete, the body and daily work. Cardinal means it starts things. A Capricorn partner shows care through effort. A plan with dates. A bill paid before it is due. A promise that still holds in ten years.
Where they meet
Both signs like to be taken seriously. Both care how they look to the world, Leo for its light and Capricorn for its standing. Both like a leader, and both can be one. The old picture pairs the Sun’s warmth with Saturn’s frame. One gives the house its fire. The other gives it walls.
Where they rub
The friction is about signals, not values. With no shared element and no shared mode, each one reads the other’s care in the wrong key.
| Where it snags | What Leo feels | What Capricorn feels | A small step that helps. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Praise. | Unseen when thanks stays silent. | Put on show when thanks is loud. | Say one thank you out loud each day, and keep it short. |
| Money. | Held back when every cost is weighed. | Worried when spending comes first. | Set a fund for joy inside a budget both have signed. |
| Time. | Second place when work runs late. | Pulled off course by plans made on a whim. | Put fun on the calendar with the same weight as work. |
| Who leads. | Sidelined when the plan is set alone. | Slowed down when every choice is a show. | Split the lead by area, and swap now and then. |
None of these steps needs a chart. Any two people with different styles can use them. The signs only give a name to the pattern. The fix lives in plain talk.
Look past the Sun
A Sun sign is one point in a chart with ten planets and twelve houses. To read two people well, astrologers compare whole charts. That method is called synastry. It looks at how each planet in one chart meets each planet in the other.
Three placements matter most for love in the old view. The Moon shows needs and moods. Venus shows what someone finds lovely. Mars shows desire and how someone pushes for what they want. A Leo with a Capricorn Moon and a Capricorn with a Leo Moon would read very differently from the Sun pair alone. The small rhythms of home belong to the Moon, and Leo and Capricorn read through the Moon covers them.
If a birthday falls near a sign change, check it first. The guide to the 12 zodiac signs gives the real Sun dates for each sign. The start of Leo moves between July 22 and 23. The end of Capricorn moves between January 19 and 21.
How I measured this
You can redo each number on this page.
For the Sun sign shares, I used two daily birth files published by FiveThirtyEight. One comes from the Social Security Administration and covers 2000 to 2014. The other comes from the National Center for Health Statistics and covers 1994 to 2003. I found each moment the Sun changed sign with astronomy-engine, an open source sky library, in the tropical zodiac. I spread each day’s births evenly over its 24 hours in Chicago time. When the Sun changed sign that day, I split the births by the hours before and after. Both files gave the same ranks: Leo first and Capricorn last.
For the pair rate, I assumed that partners’ birth dates are not linked, which is what Voas found. The chance of one Leo and one Capricorn is then two times the Leo share times the Capricorn share.
For the census cells, I used Table 7 of the Voas paper. It leaves out couples with a birthday on the first of a month, since too many of those dates came from blanks the census office filled in, and it removes the excess of same sign couples. The expected count for each cell is the row total times the column total, divided by the grand total.
For the quincunx, I took the Sun’s position at each hour of 2000 to 2014, weighted by births. I built the spread of Leo Sun degrees and Capricorn Sun degrees and combined them to get the spread of the gap. As a check, a simple formula that treats degrees as flat gives 19, 36, 46 and 56 percent, within a point of the table.
For the days between birthdays, I timed the Sun from each degree of Leo to the same degree of Capricorn, and back, for every year from 1990 to 2030. I did it once with astronomy-engine and once with the short solar formula of Jean Meeus. Both gave the same days to within a hundredth.
For the old rules, I read Ptolemy’s Book 1, chapters 13 to 19, in the Robbins version, and checked the detriment table in Lilly. The season lengths and the Saturn figure come from our sign pages, which measured them over long windows.
Frequently asked questions
Are Leo and Capricorn compatible?
Astrology reads the pair as two signs turned away from each other, five signs apart. Their rulers, the Sun and Saturn, were set up as rivals in the old books, though they share the day sect. No study has shown that any sign pair lasts longer, so treat it as a lens, not a forecast.
How common is a Leo and Capricorn couple?
In US birth data, about 1 random pair in 73 is one Leo and one Capricorn. Leo is the most common Sun sign in US births and Capricorn the rarest, and the two effects almost cancel out.
What is the aspect between Leo and Capricorn?
A quincunx, 150 degrees, or five signs apart. Ptolemy called signs five apart disjunct, meaning they share no aspect. By degree, only about one pair in five has a true quincunx within 3 degrees.
Why are the Sun and Saturn called enemies?
Ptolemy gave Saturn the signs across from the homes of the Sun and Moon, and set Saturn’s exaltation in the Sun’s fall. He says he did this so that Saturn would stand opposite the Sun. Later writers added that Saturn is in detriment in Leo.
Can a Leo and a Capricorn share a Venus sign?
No. Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. A Leo’s Venus falls between Gemini and Libra, and a Capricorn’s between Scorpio and Pisces, so the lists never meet.
