Venus in Leo and Venus in Capricorn look like a match of opposites. One loves out loud. The other loves by building. But the gap between them is not just a matter of taste. It is written in the calendar. We ran the sky from 1600 to 2400, and the result is plain: a Leo Venus is born between early June and early October, and a Capricorn Venus between early November and early March. Their birthdays never fall in the same month, and their Sun signs never match.
This guide gives you those numbers first. Then it reads the pair the way the old books do, as a lens, not a verdict. Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved.
Leo and Capricorn sit a hundred and fifty degrees apart, the quincunx, an angle the tradition treats as adjustment without resolution. Leo and Capricorn as Moon signs reads the same two signs through emotional need, the layer Venus leaves untouched.
A summer birth meets a winter birth
Venus never strays far from the Sun. Seen from Earth, the gap between them tops out at about 47 degrees. Astrologers call that gap the elongation. It is why Venus in any sign pulls the Sun along with it, and so it pulls your birthday too.
We found every date Venus entered and left Leo and Capricorn from 1600 to 2400. Here is the span of the calendar each one covers.
| Venus sign | Earliest birthday | Latest birthday | Season. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Venus in Leo | June 4 | October 10 | Summer into early fall. |
| Venus in Capricorn | November 5 | March 8 | Late fall to the end of winter. |
Look at the gaps. From October 10 to November 5, neither placement is possible. That is almost four weeks. From March 8 to June 4, it is three months. April and May belong to neither. So if you have a Leo Venus and your partner has a Capricorn Venus, you were born in different parts of the year, every time. At least 26 days of the calendar sit between your birthdays.
That fits the old picture well. Leo is the sign of high summer in the northern half of the world. Capricorn opens the winter. The tradition gave Leo to the Sun and Capricorn to Saturn, the cold, far planet. Here the sky backs the metaphor with dates.
How common each Venus sign is
Venus does not spend the same time in each sign. Its path, seen from a moving Earth, speeds up and slows down. Over a long window, the shares settle. Here are the two that matter for this pair.
| Venus sign | Share of time, 1600 to 2400 | Rank among twelve. |
|---|---|---|
| Venus in Leo | 8.46 percent | Fourth most common. |
| Venus in Capricorn | 8.04 percent | The rarest of all twelve. |
| Even split | 8.33 percent | One sign in twelve. |
Our guide to Venus in Capricorn first showed that it is the rarest Venus sign over those 800 years, at 8.04 percent. We found the same figure. Leo sits in the upper half, just behind Cancer, Taurus and Gemini.
The window matters. Venus runs in an eight-year loop, and a short span can tilt the count. Over 800 years, Venus is in Leo 8.46 percent of the time, the figure our guide to Venus in Leo also gives. For people born from 1950 to 2010, we count 8.38 percent. Both say the same thing: Leo Venus is close to one person in twelve.
Which Sun signs each Venus can hold
Because Venus stays near the Sun, each Venus sign can only pair with five Sun signs. Here is who holds each one, as a share of all people with that Venus, over 1600 to 2400.
| Sun sign | Share of Leo Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Gemini | 8.4 percent | Venus far ahead of the Sun. |
| Cancer | 29.8 percent | The largest group. |
| Leo | 23.9 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Virgo | 29.2 percent | A close second. |
| Libra | 8.8 percent | Venus far behind the Sun. |
| Sun sign | Share of Capricorn Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Scorpio | 9.6 percent | Venus far ahead of the Sun. |
| Sagittarius | 28.8 percent | A close second. |
| Capricorn | 23.2 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Aquarius | 29.0 percent | The largest group. |
| Pisces | 9.4 percent | Venus far behind the Sun. |
The two lists share no sign at all. A Leo Venus runs from Gemini to Libra. A Capricorn Venus runs from Scorpio to Pisces. So a couple with this Venus pair never shares a Sun sign. That is not true of every Venus pair. For signs next door, or two apart, the Sun lists overlap. Here the space between Leo and Capricorn is too wide.
The same rule runs through every Venus pair: in our Venus sign compatibility guide, opposite Suns never share a Venus sign.
For people born from 1950 to 2010, the order shifts a little. Virgo Suns lead for that span, at 32 percent. The long window puts Cancer just ahead. Either way, fewer than one Leo Venus in four is also a Leo Sun.
One random couple in 74
Pick two people at random. How likely is it that one has Venus in Leo and the other has Venus in Capricorn? The math is short. Take 8.46 percent times 8.04 percent. Double it, since either one can be the Leo. You get 1.36 percent. That is about one couple in 74.
An even split of signs would give one couple in 72. So this pair is a touch rarer than average, and Capricorn is the reason. For people born from 1950 to 2010, we get 1.35 percent. The answer barely moves.
Now add the Sun. What share of these couples are also a Leo Sun with a Capricorn Sun? Take 23.9 percent times 23.2 percent. You get 5.5 percent, about one couple in 18. So most of these couples will not read their match in a Sun sign column. For them, Leo and Capricorn as Sun signs tells a different story from the one in their Venus.
Two signs that do not see each other
Leo and Capricorn are five signs apart. The angle between them is 150 degrees. Modern astrologers call it a quincunx, or inconjunct. The word means “not joined.”
Ptolemy lists the classic aspects in the Tetrabiblos, in the second century. They are the conjunction, sextile, square, trine and opposition. Signs that form one of those angles “behold” each other. Signs one apart or five apart form none of them. Later writers called such signs averse, meaning turned away. Vettius Valens and William Lilly use the same frame. In their terms, Leo and Capricorn have no line of sight.
The old books add more links between signs. Two signs the same distance from a solstice have days of the same length. The old books call these mirror signs antiscia. Leo mirrors Taurus. Capricorn mirrors Sagittarius. So none of these links joins Leo to Capricorn either. By the rules of the tradition, these two signs are strangers.
Their elements and modes differ too. Leo is fire and fixed. Fixed signs hold the middle of a season. Capricorn is earth and cardinal. Cardinal signs start a season. Fire and earth do not blend in the old scheme of hot and cold, dry and wet. They share one quality: both are dry.
Then there are the rulers. The Sun rules Leo. Saturn rules Capricorn. In the old scheme of rulership, the Sun and Moon hold Leo and Cancer. Saturn holds the two signs across from them, Aquarius and Capricorn. So the Sun and Saturn stand at the two ends of the chain. Light and warmth sit at one end. Cold and limits sit at the other. Robert Hand and Chris Brennan both trace this scheme back to the Hellenistic era.
Modern writers read the quincunx as a call to adjust. Stephen Arroyo treats it as friction that asks for small, steady changes. No one grand fix will do. Our guide to the zodiac signs sets out how each sign stands toward the others.
What Venus finds in each sign
The old books rank a planet by the sign it sits in. These ranks are called dignities. A planet in a sign it rules is at home. A planet in the sign across from its home is in exile. Here is what Lilly’s table in Christian Astrology gives Venus in these two signs.
| Rank | Venus in Leo | Venus in Capricorn. |
|---|---|---|
| Home or exile | Neither, the Sun rules Leo | Neither, Saturn rules Capricorn. |
| Triplicity, a rank shared by the signs of one element | None, fire goes to the Sun and Jupiter | Yes by day, Venus leads the earth signs. |
| Term, a small slice of a sign | Leo 13 to 19 degrees | Capricorn 0 to 6 degrees. |
| Face, a ten-degree slice | None in Leo | None in Capricorn. |
So Venus has a little more standing in Capricorn than in Leo. Ptolemy gives Venus the lead of the earth signs in a day chart. A day chart is a birth with the Sun above the horizon. In Leo, Venus is a guest in the house of the Sun. Lilly calls a planet with no rank at all peregrine, which means a traveler. A Leo Venus outside its six degrees of term fits that word.
This does not mean one partner loves better. It means each Venus works through a host. In Leo, the host is the Sun. Love wants to be seen, named and warm. In Capricorn, the host is Saturn. Love wants proof over time. The Leo sign and Capricorn sign pages give more on each host.
How this pair shows love
Read this as a grid, not a forecast. The same Venus plays out in many ways across many charts.
The Leo Venus way
A Leo Venus likes love that is visible. Think of the loud birthday, the bold note, the photo that goes up the same day. Praise feels like care. Being chosen in front of others feels like proof. The Sun rules Leo, so this Venus wants light on the bond. It gives warmth freely and hopes to see it come back.
The Capricorn Venus way
A Capricorn Venus likes love that lasts. Think of the kept promise, the fixed shelf, the plan for next year. Care looks like effort and time. Saturn rules Capricorn, so this Venus trusts what holds up under strain. Liz Greene wrote a whole book on Saturn in 1976. She reads its touch on love as a guard that drops once trust is earned. This Venus gives slowly, then keeps giving.
Where the two meet
Both signs care about standing. Leo wants to shine. Capricorn wants to rise. Both like quality over noise. Both like loyalty. A Leo Venus brings joy to the work of a shared life. A Capricorn Venus brings a frame that lets the joy last. When it works, one partner makes the plan and the other makes the plan feel like a party.
Where friction shows up
The quincunx does not bring open fights so much as small misreads. Here are the ones astrologers name most.
- Timing. A Leo Venus wants to hear it now. A Capricorn Venus wants to show it later.
- Display. Public praise can feel like a gift to one and a show to the other.
- Pride. Leo pride is about being seen. Capricorn pride is about being right over time. Both can dig in.
- Money. One spends on moments. The other saves for the long run.
- Rest. One wants a night out. The other wants a quiet night after a long week.
None of these is fixed. The rest of each chart shapes how they play out. A Moon, a rising sign or a strong Saturn can change the tone a lot.
What each partner can offer
The tradition does not tell you to stay or go. It gives you a map of needs. Here are simple ways to meet them.
- The Capricorn Venus can say the kind thing out loud, not just do it.
- The Leo Venus can see a paid bill or a fixed door as a love note.
- Both can set one ritual that holds both styles, like a set date night with a small surprise.
- Both can name a goal, then mark the steps with a real treat.
Your birth seasons can help too. The Leo partner was born in the long days. The Capricorn partner was born in the short ones. Some couples mark both birthdays in the style of the other: a quiet, planned summer party, and a bright, loud winter one.
When Venus visits each sign
Venus crosses each sign for about 25 days. Every eight years or so, it turns back while in one of these signs. Astrologers call that retrograde. Then it stays about four months. Here are recent and coming visits. Dates are in New York time.
| Venus in Leo | Length of stay. |
|---|---|
| June 5 to October 8, 2023 | 125 days, with a turn back. |
| July 11 to August 4, 2024 | 24 days. |
| August 25 to September 19, 2025 | 25 days. |
| June 13 to July 9, 2026 | 26 days. |
| July 27 to August 20, 2027 | 24 days. |
| September 5 to October 2, 2028 | 27 days. |
| June 5 to October 9, 2031 | 126 days, with a turn back. |
| Venus in Capricorn | Length of stay. |
|---|---|
| January 23 to February 16, 2024 | 24 days. |
| November 11 to December 7, 2024 | 26 days. |
| December 24, 2025 to January 17, 2026 | 24 days. |
| February 3 to March 1, 2027 | 26 days. |
| November 25 to December 19, 2027 | 24 days. |
| January 7 to January 31, 2029 | 24 days. |
| November 5, 2029 to March 6, 2030 | 121 days, with a turn back. |
A few edges fall near midnight. In UTC, Venus left Leo on October 9, 2023, and on August 5, 2024. It enters Capricorn on January 8, 2029, and leaves on February 1. If you were born on one of these edge days, check your chart with a birth time.
What the research says
Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will do. The largest test we know of is by David Voas, a British social scientist. In 2007 he looked at about ten million married couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales. He checked whether some Sun sign pairs wed more than chance would allow. They did not. The pattern he found was flat.
That study looked at Sun signs, not Venus signs. No test on the same scale exists for Venus. So take this page as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast. The numbers above are about the sky. They are not about your odds as a couple.
How we counted
We used the tropical zodiac. For the first method, we used the astronomy-engine library. We took the place of Venus and the Sun every six hours from 1600 to 2400. That gave 1,168,776 moments.
For the second method, we used the Swiss Ephemeris. We found each moment Venus crossed into a new sign, down to the second. Then we added up the time in each sign. We read the Sun sign every five hours on a new grid.
The two methods agree. Venus in Leo came out at 8.454 and 8.457 percent. Venus in Capricorn came out at 8.039 and 8.041 percent. The Sun sign shares agree to a tenth of a point. We checked a few crossing times with both tools. They match to the minute. For 1950 to 2010, we took a reading every hour.
Questions people ask
Are Venus in Leo and Venus in Capricorn compatible?
Astrology gives no yes or no. The two signs form a quincunx, an angle the old books treat as unlinked. Modern readers see it as a pair that must keep adjusting. Leo Venus wants love it can see. Capricorn Venus wants love that lasts.
How rare is a Leo Venus and Capricorn Venus couple?
About one random pair in 74. Venus is in Leo 8.46 percent of the time and in Capricorn 8.04 percent, over 1600 to 2400. Doubled, the product is 1.36 percent.
Can a Leo Venus and a Capricorn Venus share a Sun sign?
No. A Leo Venus goes with a Sun from Gemini to Libra. A Capricorn Venus goes with a Sun from Scorpio to Pisces. The two lists never overlap.
When are people with Venus in Leo born?
Between June 4 and October 10, in every year from 1600 to 2400. People with Venus in Capricorn are born between November 5 and March 8.
Is Venus stronger in Leo or in Capricorn?
By Lilly’s table, Venus has more rank in Capricorn. It leads the earth signs by day and holds the first six degrees as its term. In Leo it holds only a term, from 13 to 19 degrees.
