The Moon’s walk out of its fall
Tradition gives each planet four special signs. The home is where the planet rules. The exaltation is where it is an honored guest. The exile sits opposite the home. The fall sits opposite the exaltation.
The Greek astronomer Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 19, he puts the Moon’s exaltation in Taurus. Scorpio sits straight across from Taurus, so it is the Moon’s fall. Then the Moon moves on. On average, it stays in a sign for about 54.6 hours. After that, it enters Sagittarius. There it is what Lilly calls peregrine, a traveler with no major rank. The weight comes off, but no crown goes on. Our page on the Moon in Sagittarius covers that sign.
Read as a symbol, this pair is a before and after. One partner carries the fall. The other was born with a Moon that had already climbed out.
The Scorpio Moon: the keeper
Scorpio is a water sign, and fixed, which means it holds a course. A Scorpio Moon feels in depth, not in width. It gives trust slowly and remembers a hurt for a long time. It shows love through loyalty. When upset, it goes quiet and watches.
Mars rules Scorpio in the old scheme. So the Scorpio Moon hands its moods to Mars, the planet of heat and defense. When it feels safe, that heat turns into fierce care.
The Sagittarius Moon: the traveler
Sagittarius is a fire sign, and mutable, which means it adapts and closes a season. It ends the fall. A Moon here calms down by moving, by learning, by finding a bigger view. It shows love through humor, honesty and shared plans for the road.
Jupiter rules this sign. So this Moon hands its moods to Jupiter, the planet of growth and faith. When upset, it wants air and space. It talks the feeling out, or walks it off.
Neighbors that cannot see each other
Ptolemy counts four aspects in Book 1, chapter 13: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. Next-door signs form none of them. In chapter 16, he calls signs one or five apart disjunct. The later word is aversion. The two signs are turned away from each other.
Modern astrologers call the one-sign distance a semi-sextile, or 30 degrees. Most treat it as a minor angle. Here the two signs share nothing in the old scheme. Water and fire differ. Fixed and mutable differ. Scorpio is a night sign, and its neighbor is a day sign.
Ptolemy names two quieter ties in chapters 14 and 15. Some signs command and obey. Others behold each other as equals. This pair has neither, on either reading.
- By whole sign, Frank Robbins sets out the lists in notes 80 and 83 of his 1940 Loeb translation. Virgo commands Scorpio, and Scorpio beholds Pisces. The Archer beholds Aquarius and obeys Leo. Scorpio and its neighbor are not paired.
- By degree, Lilly reads the ties as mirror points, called antiscia. Scorpio mirrors Aquarius and Leo. The Archer mirrors Capricorn and Cancer. Again, no link.

Close by degree, even when apart by sign
A pair of next-door signs hides a surprise. The two Moons can sit very close by degree, across the sign line. A Moon at 28 degrees Scorpio and a Moon at 2 degrees Sagittarius are only 4 degrees apart. That is a true conjunction in degrees, the closest bond there is.

An orb is the slack astrologers allow around an exact angle. The semi-sextile values hold for every Moon pair, because the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. With a 3 degree orb, 19 percent of couples have an exact semi-sextile. In all, 7.11 percent of these couples form a conjunction or a sextile instead. Check both degrees before you trust the signs alone.
A pair one clock can swap
Because the signs touch, the Moon passes straight from one to the other. On the day it crosses, a baby born before the crossing has a Scorpio Moon. A baby born after it has a Sagittarius Moon. Two people born on the same date can form this very pair.
The Moon changes sign on 43.92 percent of days. Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. Two noon charts give the wrong Moon pair to 20.75 percent of couples, about one couple in five.
For this pair, the error can swap one sign for the other. A Scorpio Moon born late in the day could really be a Sagittarius Moon. A Sagittarius Moon born early could really be a Scorpio Moon. So a couple that reads as Scorpio and Sagittarius could turn out to be two Scorpio Moons, or two Sagittarius Moons. Fewer new moons, more full moons

The cause is the Sun’s speed. The Sun moves fastest in the northern winter and slowest in the northern summer. It crosses Scorpio and the Archer quickly, and Taurus and Gemini slowly. So both Moons have fewer days to meet the Sun in their own sign, and more days to face it.
In a couple, the lean adds up. 15.38 percent of these couples include at least one new moon birth, which ranks 70th of the 78 pairs. But 16.07 percent include at least one full moon birth, which ranks 9th.

How we measured
We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. It then summed the time, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
What the research says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.
So the fall is not a warning, and the missing tie is not a verdict. They are symbols. One Moon holds on and one Moon moves on. The symbols point to where that contrast helps, and to where it needs words.
