Gemini Moon and Scorpio Moon compatibility is a strange case in the old books. Most pairs of signs get a label, good or bad. This pair gets none. The two signs sit five signs apart, an angle called a quincunx. Ptolemy did not count that angle at all.
He had other ways to link two signs, and none of them fits here either. So in his system, a Gemini Moon and a Scorpio Moon have no bond of any kind. Only 16 of the 78 Moon pairs share that fate. On top of that, the Moon sits in its fall in Scorpio, its lowest rank.

First, what astrology can and cannot say
Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. The largest test of love signs came from the sociologist David Voas in 2007. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales, with 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom.
No one can run that test on Moon signs, since a census holds no birth times. So read this page as a map of old ideas and real sky facts. It can help two people talk. It cannot grade them.
What a Moon sign is
Your Moon sign is the part of the sky the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your inner weather. It shows what calms you, what you need when you are tired, and how you show care.

So one Moon speaks first and feels later. The other feels first and speaks much later, if at all. That gap is the heart of this pair.
Five signs apart: an angle with no name in Ptolemy
To compare two Moons, astrologers count the signs between them. Gemini and Scorpio sit five signs apart. Modern astrologers call that distance a quincunx, from a Latin word for five twelfths. Some call it an inconjunct.
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 13, he lists only four angles. The trine and the sextile are harmonious. The square and the opposition are not. The quincunx is not on his list at all. For him, two signs five apart simply do not look at each other.
Modern writers added the quincunx much later. They read it as a pair of signs with nothing in common, where each side has to adjust. That reading matches the plain facts here.
- Element: Gemini is air, the element of thought and talk. Scorpio is water, the element of feeling.
- Mode: Gemini is mutable, a sign that adapts. Scorpio is fixed, a sign that holds on.
- Ruler: Mercury rules Gemini. Mars rules Scorpio in the old scheme.
Among all 78 Moon pairs, this is the only quincunx between an air sign and a water sign where one is mutable and the other fixed.
Disjunct: the pairs Ptolemy left alone
Ptolemy did not stop at angles. In the next chapters of Book 1, he gives two more ways for signs to be linked.
Signs that command and obey
In chapter 14, two signs are linked when they sit at the same distance from the start of Aries. They rise in the same time, so he says one commands and the other obeys. Gemini pairs with Capricorn in this way. Scorpio pairs with Leo. Gemini and Scorpio do not pair.
Signs that behold each other
In chapter 15, two signs are linked when they sit at the same distance from the start of Cancer. They share the same length of day, so he says they behold each other. Gemini pairs with Leo here. Scorpio pairs with Aquarius. Again, Gemini and Scorpio do not pair.
No link at all
In chapter 16, Ptolemy names what is left. Signs one or five apart, with none of these links, are disjunct. He calls them alien to each other. Our count of all 78 pairs finds 16 that meet every part of that test. Gemini and Scorpio are one of them.
What does that mean for a couple? In the old frame, it means the two Moons have no built-in channel. Nothing in the signs makes the talk easy or the clash sharp. The link has to come from the rest of the two charts, or from the two people.
The Moon in its fall
Old astrology also rates how at ease a planet is in each sign. Ptolemy set out the ranks, and William Lilly kept them in Christian Astrology in 1647.
The Moon is exalted in Taurus, its sign of honor. Scorpio sits straight across from Taurus, so it is the Moon’s fall. A planet in fall is like a guest who is not made welcome. The Moon stands for comfort and care, and Scorpio makes that comfort work hard.

The Gemini Moon has no major rank. The Moon is not at home in Gemini, and not in exile either. So this couple joins a neutral Moon with a Moon in its lowest seat.
The aspect that can hide inside
A quincunx by sign is not always 150 degrees in the sky. Each Moon can sit anywhere in its sign, from the first degree to the last. So the real gap between two Moons moves around.
Astrologers allow a margin around an exact angle, called an orb. Within that margin, they count the aspect as real. Here is how many couples have a true quincunx in degrees.

Those shares are the same for every Moon pair. They come from geometry, not from this pair.
The edge cases are more telling. A late Gemini Moon and an early Scorpio Moon can sit about 120 degrees apart. That is a real trine, the easy angle, across a sign line. An early Gemini Moon and a late Scorpio Moon can sit about 180 degrees apart. That is a real opposition.
At an 8 degree orb, each case covers 3.56 percent of couples. Together, 7.11 percent of Gemini and Scorpio Moon couples have a true trine or a true opposition. So about one couple in 14 has a real Ptolemy aspect after all. Astrologers call that an aspect out of sign.
A sky fact: births near the new moon
A person born near a new moon has the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. A person born near a full moon has the Moon in the sign across from the Sun. For each Moon sign, the two shares are close to 8.3 percent. They are not equal, and the gap is real.

The Gemini Moon leans hard toward the new moon. Only the Cancer Moon leans further. The cause is the Earth’s path. The Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July. So in late spring the Sun moves slowly and stays longer in Gemini. More Moons pass through that sign while the Sun is still there.
For the couple, 15.83 percent include at least one partner born with Moon and Sun in the same sign. That is a little above the 15.62 percent with one partner born near a full moon. The gap will not decide anything. Our guide to moon phase compatibility shows how to find your own phase.
How the two Moons meet in daily life
Take a hard day. The Gemini Moon wants to talk it through, right now, from three sides. The Scorpio Moon wants quiet, then one honest talk when it feels safe. Each way works. Each looks wrong to the other.
To the Scorpio Moon, fast talk can feel like a feeling brushed aside. To the Gemini Moon, silence can feel like a door shut in its face. Neither reading is true. Both are Moons doing what calms them.
The two Moons meet on one point. Both want to know what is really going on. Gemini finds out by asking. Scorpio finds out by watching. A couple that sees this can use it. One asks, one reads the room, and they compare notes.
Check both Moons before you read
A reading needs two correct Moon signs. The Moon stays in a sign for 54.6 hours on average, and changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. A birth on such a day has two possible Moons.
Tools with no birth time use noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign in 10.98 percent of charts. For a couple, it gives the wrong pair in about 1 case in 5. Only 31 percent of couples have both Moons fixed by their dates alone. Our pivot page on Moon sign compatibility gives the full count.
For this pair, a Gemini Moon near a sign change might be a Taurus or Cancer Moon. A Scorpio Moon might be a Libra or Sagittarius Moon. The birth time settles it.
Three talks worth having
- How long can a silence last? Agree on it. The Gemini Moon can wait if it knows the talk will come.
- What counts as private? The Scorpio Moon needs some things kept close. Name them out loud.
- How do we check in? A short, plain question each day helps both Moons more than a long talk once a month.

How we measured
We used two separate routes over the years 1600 to 2400, with all moments weighted the same. Route one used the astronomy-engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun to within a tenth of a second, then added up the exact time in each case. Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris and checked the sky once an hour, on a grid shifted by half an hour. The two routes agree to within 0.05 points.

Are a Gemini Moon and a Scorpio Moon compatible?
Astrology reads them as a quincunx, five signs apart, with no link in Ptolemy’s system. That means no built-in ease and no built-in clash. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple does.
What does disjunct mean?
Ptolemy used it for signs one or five apart that share no aspect, no equal rising time and no equal length of day. Only 16 of the 78 Moon pairs are fully disjunct, and this is one.
