A Moon sign in plain words
Your Moon sign is the part of the sky the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your private self. It is the part of you that reacts before you think. It shows what calms you and how you protect the people you love.

The Moon’s two hardest signs
Tradition gives each planet four special signs. The home is where the planet rules. The exaltation is where it is an honored guest. The exile sits opposite the home. The fall sits opposite the exaltation.
The Moon’s home is Cancer, so its exile is Capricorn, the sign across from it. Ptolemy puts the Moon’s exaltation in Taurus, so its fall is Scorpio. William Lilly, in his Christian Astrology of 1647, lists both. That makes Scorpio and Capricorn the Moon’s two hardest signs.
A hard seat is not a verdict on a person. A Scorpio Moon is not cruel, and a Capricorn Moon is not cold. In the old reading, both feel a great deal and show little. Fall and exile are not the same thing
The two weak seats work in different ways. Exile means the planet is in the sign across from its own home. It is like living in a house built for someone else. The rules there are not yours. The Capricorn Moon handles this by building its own rules: routines, duties, and goals.
Fall means the planet is across from the place where it is most honored. It is like a guest who arrives at the wrong party. It still works, but it has to work harder to be seen. The Scorpio Moon handles this by going deep and staying guarded. Trust comes slowly.
Read as a symbol, the pair shares one thing. Neither Moon expects feelings to be easy. That shared view can be a relief. Neither partner asks the other to be sunny on demand.
The Scorpio Moon: the keeper

Here is the detail that ties the two rulers together. In Ptolemy’s list of exaltations, Mars is exalted in Capricorn. So the planet that hosts the Scorpio Moon is an honored guest in the Capricorn Moon’s sign.

What the sextile does
A sextile joins signs of friendly elements. Here that is water and earth. Water keeps earth alive, and earth gives water a bed to run in. Both signs are night signs, which Ptolemy calls feminine. So both Moons sit in signs of their own kind. Neither one wants to air its feelings in public.
The modes add texture. Scorpio is fixed and holds on. Capricorn is cardinal and pushes ahead. In a good week, Capricorn sets the goal and Scorpio stays with it. In a bad week, both dig in and wait for the other to speak first.

Is the sextile exact?
A sextile by sign is not always a sextile by degree. A Moon at 1 degree of Scorpio and a Moon at 29 degrees of Capricorn are two signs apart. Yet the real gap is 88 degrees. That is nearly a square, a tense angle. Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle, called an orb.

These values hold for every Moon pair, because the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. With an 8 degree orb, fewer than half of Scorpio Moon and Capricorn Moon couples have an exact sextile. In about 3.6 percent, the two Moons form a square across the sign line instead.
Ptolemy also names two quieter ties. Some signs “command and obey”, and some “behold” each other. Scorpio and Capricorn share neither, on any reading. The sextile is their whole classical link.
Fewer new moons, more full moons

The cause is the Sun’s speed. The Sun moves fastest in the northern winter and slowest in the northern summer. It crosses Capricorn in the shortest time of any sign, so a Capricorn Moon has the fewest days to meet it. It crosses Cancer in the longest time, so a Capricorn Moon has the most days to face it.
Capricorn Moons have the lowest share of new moon births of all twelve Moon signs, and the highest share of full moon births. In a couple, the lean adds up. 15.36 percent of Scorpio Moon and Capricorn Moon couples include at least one new moon birth. That puts the pair 72nd of the 78. But 16.1 percent include at least one full moon birth, which puts it 7th.

The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank the Moon pairs by frequency. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.
Check your Moons before you read on
The Moon moves fast. It stays in one sign for about 54.6 hours on average, and between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. So on 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour. A person born on such a day has two possible Moon signs.
Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. Two noon charts give the wrong Moon pair to about 20.8 percent of couples, one couple in five. Only about 31 percent of couples have both Moons fixed by the date alone. A Scorpio Moon born late in the day could be a Sagittarius Moon. A Capricorn Moon born early could be one too.
How we measured
We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. It then summed the time, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
What the research says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.
So the fall and the exile are not warnings, and the sextile is not a promise. They are symbols. A Scorpio Moon and a Capricorn Moon both guard their feelings and prove their love by staying. The symbols point to where that shared reserve helps, and to where it needs words.
