Aries Moon and Capricorn Moon compatibility is a pair of two starters. Both signs open a season. Aries opens spring. Capricorn opens winter. Both want to move first, and they want to move in different ways.
The old books add a twist that most pages skip. The planet that rules Aries is Mars. Mars reaches its peak in Capricorn. The planet that rules Capricorn is Saturn. Saturn sinks to its low point in Aries. Each Moon sits in a sign where the other partner’s ruler is either lifted up or pulled down. On top of that, the Capricorn Moon sits in exile, its weakest sign by rank.
This page walks through those old rules, checks them in the source texts, and adds the numbers we measured over eight centuries of real Moon positions. One thing first. Astrology is not a science. Read this as a lens for talking about needs, not as a forecast.

What a Moon sign is, in one minute
Your Moon sign is the slice of sky the Moon stood in when you were born. The sky is cut into twelve slices of 30 degrees each. The Moon crosses all twelve in about 27.3 days. So it spends a little over two days in each sign.
Astrologers read the Sun as your will and your public face. They read the Moon as your inner weather. It is what calms you down, what you need when you are tired, and how you give care. Liz Greene and Stephen Arroyo both give the Moon a central place in their books on love.

First, what no one can promise
No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. The largest test we know looked at Sun signs, not Moons. David Voas used the 2001 census of England and Wales. He checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of the signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from typing errors in the forms.
No one has run a test that large on Moon signs. So we make no claim either way. This page gives the pair no score. It uses the old symbols to put words on two ways of feeling.
Two starters: what cardinal means
The old books sort the signs into three modes. Cardinal signs open a season. Fixed signs hold the middle of it. Mutable signs close it and hand over to the next.
Aries and Capricorn are both cardinal. The Sun enters Aries on the first day of spring. It enters Capricorn on the first day of winter. So both Moons, in the old reading, like to start things. They want to act on a feeling rather than sit with it.
The trouble is the pace. Aries is fire. Fire acts at once and cools down fast. Capricorn is earth. Earth acts on a plan and keeps going. An Aries Moon wants to deal with a hurt tonight. A Capricorn Moon wants to deal with it once there is a plan. Both are trying to fix things. They just run on different clocks.
The square: why the old books call it hard
Count along the wheel from Aries. Taurus is one step, Gemini two, Cancer three. Go the other way and Capricorn is also three steps back. Signs three apart sit at 90 degrees. That angle is a square.
Claudius Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria, around 150 AD. In book one he names four classic aspects. An aspect is a set angle between two points in the sky. The four are the trine, the sextile, the square and the opposition. He calls the trine and sextile harmonious. He calls the square and the opposition hard.
Ptolemy explains the square by its signs. Signs in a square belong to clashing kinds. Here, fire meets earth, and a masculine sign meets a feminine one. These are old labels for signs that take turns around the wheel.
So the square is a pair of two strong wills that face in different ways. In book four, on marriage, Ptolemy looks at the Sun and Moon of both partners. He says unions last when these lights sit in a trine or sextile. By his own rule, a square between two Moons is the harder case. But hard is not the same as doomed. Many readers see a square as the pair that does the most work together.
Only one pair has this exact mix
Many pairs are squares. But each square joins its own kinds of sign. We sorted all 78 Moon pairs by three things: the aspect, the two elements and the two modes.
Aries and Capricorn came out alone. It is the only pair where a fire sign squares an earth sign and both signs are cardinal. The other fire and earth squares join fixed signs, such as Leo and Taurus, or mutable ones, such as Sagittarius and Virgo. The other cardinal squares join fire and water, water and air, or air and earth.
The closest cousin is Libra and Capricorn. It is also a cardinal square that involves Capricorn. But Libra is air, so the mix differs. You can compare our page on Libra and Capricorn Moons.
Where each Moon stands in rank
The old books give each planet ranks in the signs. They are called dignities. There are four main ones. A planet’s home is the sign it rules. Its exaltation is the sign where it is lifted up. Its exile is the sign across from its home. Its fall is the sign across from its exaltation.
For the Moon, William Lilly’s Christian Astrology of 1647 lists them plainly. Home is Cancer. Exaltation is Taurus. Exile is Capricorn. Fall is Scorpio.

Exile does not mean bad. It means the Moon works in a sign whose nature is far from its own. The Moon is soft, wet and quick to change. Capricorn is dry, cold and slow. The Aries Moon holds no main rank at all. The old word is peregrine, meaning a wanderer. A wanderer is neither helped nor hurt by its sign. It acts on its own terms, which fits the Aries style of quick, direct feeling. Our page on the Moon in Aries covers that side in full.
The crossed rulers: Mars rises, Saturn falls
This is the part most compatibility pages leave out. Every sign has a ruling planet. Aries is ruled by Mars. Capricorn is ruled by Saturn. Now look at where each ruler stands in the other partner’s sign.
Ptolemy lists the exaltations in book one, chapter 19. Mars is exalted in Capricorn. Saturn is exalted in Libra, and so its fall is in Aries, the sign across the wheel. Lilly gives the same table fifteen centuries later.

Read as a symbol, the lesson is lopsided. The Aries partner’s energy gets stronger when it works inside Capricorn’s frame. Aim a quick fire at a clear goal, and it does its best work. Meanwhile, the Capricorn partner’s caution loses force on Aries ground. Saturn’s slow, careful mood does not hold in a sign that wants action now.
So in this couple, the old rules hint at who should set the pace for what. Aries brings the push. Capricorn brings the shape. When Aries tries to rush the shape, or Capricorn tries to slow the push, the square bites.
What the pair can build
Here is how a reader of the old symbols would sum up the couple. It is a way of talking, not a verdict.
- Both partners want to fix a problem rather than soak in it.
- Aries names a feeling fast. Capricorn keeps a promise long after the mood has passed.
- Aries can teach Capricorn that a need is allowed to be urgent.
- Capricorn can teach Aries that a need is best met more than once.
- Fights run hot on one side and cold on the other.
- Repair works best with a time set for it: a talk tonight, then a plan by the weekend.
New Moon and Full Moon births in this pair
Some people are born when the Moon and the Sun share a sign. That is close to a New Moon. Others are born with the Moon in the sign across from the Sun. That is close to a Full Moon. These two cases are not the same size for every Moon sign, and the gap is real.
The reason is the Sun’s speed. Earth moves fastest around the Sun in early January and slowest in early July. So the Sun lingers longer in the summer signs. A Capricorn Moon at Full Moon needs the Sun in Cancer, a summer sign. So it comes up more.

For the couple, that gives two shares. In about 15.5 percent of Aries and Capricorn Moon couples, at least one partner was born with the Moon in their Sun sign. How common this pair is
We measured the Moon’s place from the year 1600 to the year 2400. Each Moon sign holds almost exactly one twelfth of the time, between 8.33 and 8.34 percent. The small gaps between signs are smaller than the gap between our two methods. So they mean nothing.
That makes the math plain. A random couple has two partners with two different Moon signs in 11 cases out of 12. Any one mixed pair, such as Aries and Capricorn, comes up for about 1 couple in 72. A pair of the same Moon sign comes up for about 1 couple in 144. No Moon pair is rare, and none is common. Any page that ranks Moon pairs by rarity is reading noise.
Is the square exact? Only about a third of the time
A square by sign is not always a square by degree. Two Moons in these signs can sit anywhere from 60 to 120 degrees apart. A chart reader counts an aspect only when the angle is close to 90. The room allowed is called the orb.
With the Moons spread evenly through their signs, the shares are simple to work out. About 19 percent of couples sit within 3 degrees of a true square. About 36 percent sit within 6 degrees. About 56 percent sit within 10 degrees. The same shares hold for every pair of signs three apart. So only about one Aries and Capricorn couple in three has a square that a careful reader would call tight.
Check the birth time first
The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day. So it changes sign every two and a quarter days. We counted every change from 1600 to 2400. On 43.92 percent of days, the Moon starts in one sign and ends in the next.
A free tool that knows only the date guesses the hour, and the usual guess is noon. That noon guess gives the wrong Moon sign for about 11 percent of births, or 1 in 9. Pair two such charts, and the Moon pair comes out wrong for about 21 percent of couples. That is 1 couple in 5.
So before you read anything into this pair, check both birth times. An Aries Moon born early in the day could be a Pisces Moon. A Capricorn Moon born late could be an Aquarius Moon. Only about 31 percent of couples have both Moon signs fixed by the date alone.
How we measured it
We used two separate methods. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every time the Moon, Sun and Venus changed sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second. It then added up the time in each sign. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It stepped through the same eight centuries once an hour, shifted half an hour from the first grid.
The two methods agree within 0.04 points on every Moon share. Days and noon charts use Greenwich time. The dignity tables come from Ptolemy’s Tetrabiblos, book one, and Lilly’s Christian Astrology.
