Libra Moon and Capricorn Moon compatibility is a square between two cardinal signs. Libra opens the northern autumn. Capricorn opens the northern winter. Both Moons like to start things, and they meet at a right angle.
The old books add a twist that most guides skip. The Capricorn Moon is in exile, its hardest seat. Its host is Saturn. And Saturn is exalted in Libra, the sign of the other Moon. So the partner with the weaker Moon has a host who is honored in the other partner’s sign.
This page reads that thread, the square, and the numbers behind them. One thing first: astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. Read what follows as a lens, not a forecast.
The pair at a glance
| Question | Short answer. |
|---|---|
| Distance between the signs | Three signs, a square of 90 degrees. |
| Elements and modes | Air and earth, both cardinal. |
| Rulers | Venus for Libra, Saturn for Capricorn. |
| Moon strength | No major rank in Libra, in exile in Capricorn. |
| Hosts in each other’s sign | Saturn exalted in Libra, Venus with a minor rank in Capricorn. |
| How common is the pair? | About 1 couple in 72, like any pair of two signs. |
| How close is the square? | Within 8 degrees in 46 percent of couples. |
What a Moon sign shows
Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your private self. It is the part of you that reacts before you think. It shows what soothes you and how you care for the people you love.
Two Moons are compared by the number of signs between them. Libra and Capricorn sit three signs apart. That gap is a square, an angle of 90 degrees. Our moon sign compatibility guide covers every distance between two Moons.
The Capricorn Moon: in exile
Tradition gives each planet four special signs. The home is where the planet rules. The exaltation is where it is an honored guest. The exile sits opposite the home. The fall sits opposite the exaltation.
The Moon’s home is Cancer. Capricorn sits straight across from it. So in Capricorn, the Moon is in exile. Ptolemy and William Lilly, in his Christian Astrology of 1647, agree on this. An exiled Moon still works. It is a guest in a house built for someone else, so it holds back and does its job.
The picture has one soft edge. Ptolemy gives each group of three signs of one element a pair of rulers, called triplicity rulers. For the earth signs, Venus rules by day and the Moon rules by night. So a Capricorn Moon born at night keeps a minor rank, even in exile. It is a small detail, but it shows the seat is not all bad.
For the exile in detail, see our page on the Moon in Capricorn.
The Libra Moon: a plain guest
Libra is none of the Moon’s four special signs. The Moon there has no major rank, so the sign neither helps nor hurts it. Lilly gives it one small rank, called a face, in the first ten degrees of Libra. That rank is minor.
So one partner starts from a neutral seat, and the other from a hard one. That is not a verdict on either person. It says which Moon has to work harder to feel at ease and be seen. For the other side, see our page on the Moon in Libra.
Saturn’s honor in Libra
Every sign has a ruling planet, the host of anything placed there. Venus rules Libra. Saturn rules Capricorn. So the Libra Moon lodges with Venus, and the Capricorn Moon lodges with Saturn.
Now look at where each host stands in the other’s sign. Ptolemy puts Saturn’s exaltation in Libra. His reason was seasonal: in Libra the days grow short and the cold starts to rise, which suits a cold planet. Lilly marks the exact point at 21 degrees of Libra. So the host of the exiled Moon is an honored guest in the Libra Moon’s sign.
The link runs the other way too, in a smaller way. Venus is the day ruler of the earth signs, so she keeps a minor rank in Capricorn. Neither link is a full exchange of homes. But each host has standing in the other’s world.
Read as a symbol, this is a meeting point. Saturn stands for rules, time, and duty. Libra is the sign of fair terms. A Capricorn Moon feels safe when the rules are clear, and Libra is where Saturn’s rules turn into justice. The Libra Moon can offer the fairness the Capricorn Moon trusts.
Two cardinal Moons at a right angle
In Book 1 of the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy lists four angles between signs: the opposition, the trine, the square, and the sextile. He calls the square a hard angle. His reason is gender. The old books class fire and air as masculine, and earth and water as feminine. Libra is masculine and Capricorn is feminine, so the square joins two signs of opposite kinds.
Among the 78 Moon pairs, this is the only square between cardinal air and cardinal earth. Both signs want to lead. Libra leads through talk and consent. Capricorn leads through plans and results.
Ptolemy also names two quieter links, and there are two ways to read his list. By degree, as Lilly read it, signs link when they mirror across the solstice or equinox points. Libra mirrors Pisces and Virgo, and Capricorn mirrors Sagittarius and Gemini, so these two do not mirror. By whole signs, as F. E. Robbins lists them in the Loeb edition (notes 80 and 83), Libra stands outside the command scheme and Capricorn beholds no sign at all. So the square is the whole classical bond here.
Is the square exact?
A square by sign is not always 90 degrees by degree. A Moon at 1 degree of Libra and a Moon at 29 degrees of Capricorn are three signs apart. Yet the real gap is 118 degrees, close to a trine. Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle. That slack is called an orb.
| Orb allowed | Share of couples with a true square. |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees | 19 percent of couples. |
| Within 6 degrees | 36 percent of couples. |
| Within 8 degrees | 46 percent of couples. |
| Within 10 degrees | 56 percent of couples. |
These values hold for every Moon pair, because the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. With an 8 degree orb, about 3.6 percent of these couples have a trine across the sign line instead. Another 3.6 percent have a sextile. For those couples, the tense angle by sign is a soft one by degree.
What each partner brings
Libra is air, the element of talk and links between people. A Libra Moon calms down by restoring balance. It weighs both sides before it reacts. It shows love through kind words, grace, and time together. Under stress, it smooths things over and feels the hurt later.
Capricorn is earth, the element of form and results. A Capricorn Moon calms down by getting things done. It trusts actions more than words. It shows love by showing up, fixing things, and building for the long run. Under stress, it goes quiet and works harder.
The square shows where the two styles grind. The Libra Moon wants to talk a feeling through. The Capricorn Moon wants to solve it and move on. Libra can read the silence as coldness. Capricorn can read the talk as delay.
- The Capricorn Moon says one feeling in words, even a short one.
- The Libra Moon names a need plainly, without waiting for the right mood.
- Both agree that a plan can be a gift, and so can a kind word.
- Both keep one evening a week with no tasks and no guests.
A level Moon and a full-moon Moon
A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.
| Moon sign | New moon births, Sun in the same sign | Full moon births, Sun in the opposite sign. |
|---|---|---|
| Libra Moon | 8.19 percent, Sun in Libra | 8.20 percent, Sun in Aries. |
| Capricorn Moon | 7.94 percent, Sun in Capricorn | 8.48 percent, Sun in Cancer. |
The cause is the Sun’s speed. The Earth’s orbit is not a perfect circle, so the Sun seems to move fastest in early January. It spends about 29.4 days in Capricorn, its shortest stay in any sign. So a Capricorn Moon has the fewest days of all to meet it. Six months later, the Sun is slowest and lingers in Cancer, across the wheel. So a Capricorn Moon has the most days of all to face it. Of the 12 Moon signs, Capricorn has the lowest share of new moon births and the highest share of full moon births.
Libra and Aries sit near the Sun’s average pace, so the Libra Moon stays level. In a couple, 15.48 percent include at least one new moon birth, which puts the pair 64th of the 78. And 15.98 percent include at least one full moon birth, which puts it 13th. The lean comes from the Capricorn side alone.
How common is a Libra Moon and Capricorn Moon couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank the Moon pairs by how common they are. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.
Check the birth time first
The Moon stays in one sign for 54.6 hours on average, and between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. On 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour. So the date alone does not always settle the Moon sign.
Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. Two noon charts give the wrong Moon pair to 20.75 percent of couples, about one couple in five. A Capricorn Moon born early could be a Sagittarius Moon, and one born late could be an Aquarius Moon. A Libra Moon could be a Virgo or a Scorpio Moon.
How we measured
We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. It then summed the time, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
What the research says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.
So the exile and the square are not warnings, and Saturn’s honor in Libra is not a promise. They are symbols. A Libra Moon and a Capricorn Moon both want a life that is fair and well built. The symbols show where each reaches it by a different road.

Frequently asked questions
Are a Libra Moon and a Capricorn Moon compatible?
Astrology reads them as a square between two cardinal signs, air and earth. The square is a tense angle. No study has shown that Moon signs predict a couple’s future, so treat it as a lens.
Why is the Moon in exile in Capricorn?
The Moon’s home is Cancer, and the exile is the sign opposite the home. That sign is Capricorn. In Libra, the Moon has no major rank.
What does Saturn’s exaltation in Libra mean for this pair?
Saturn hosts the Capricorn Moon and is exalted in Libra, the other Moon’s sign. Read as a symbol, the Capricorn Moon’s host is honored in the Libra Moon’s world.
How common is a Libra Moon and Capricorn Moon couple?
About 1 random couple in 72. The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign, so every pair of two different Moon signs has the same odds.
Why do Capricorn Moons lean toward full moon births?
The Sun crosses Capricorn fastest and Cancer slowest. So a Capricorn Moon has few days to meet the Sun and many days to face it: 7.94 and 8.48 percent.
