To compare two Moons, astrologers count the signs between them. Cancer and Libra sit three signs apart. That distance is a square, an angle of 90 degrees, a quarter of the circle. Ptolemy, the Greek author of the Tetrabiblos, sorted the angles into two groups. He called the trine and the sextile harmonious. He called the square and the opposition disharmonious.
Ptolemy also listed other links between signs. Some signs command others. Some behold each other, because they share the same length of day. Cancer and Libra have none of these extra links. The square is all they have.
Two signs that open a season

The friction reads like this. The Cancer Moon wants its partner to side with it, fully and at once. The Libra Moon wants to see both sides first. To the Cancer Moon, that feels cold. To the Libra Moon, the demand feels unfair.

Is the square itself real?
A square by sign is not always a square by degree. Each sign spans 30 degrees. So two Moons three signs apart can sit anywhere from 60 to 120 degrees apart. A Moon at 1 degree of Cancer and a Moon at 29 degrees of Libra are 118 degrees apart. That is closer to a trine than to a square.

These values are the same for every Moon pair, because the Moon spends about the same time in each degree. With the usual 8 degree orb, fewer than half of these couples have a real square. With the same orb, 7.11 percent have a trine or a sextile across the sign line instead. That is about 1 couple in 14.
A solstice sign and an equinox sign, in numbers
Some people are born with the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. That is a new moon birth, by sign. Others are born with the Moon in the opposite sign. That is a full moon birth, by sign. Our page on moon phase compatibility covers the exact phases.
These shares follow the seasons. The Sun moves slowest in early July, when Earth is farthest from it, and fastest in early January. So the Sun lingers in Cancer, and the Moon meets it there a little more. Among people with a Cancer Moon, 8.48 percent also have the Sun in Cancer, the highest of all twelve signs. Only 7.92 percent have the Sun in Capricorn, the lowest.
Libra is the opposite case. Among people with a Libra Moon, 8.19 percent have the Sun in Libra and 8.20 percent have it in Aries. The two shares are almost equal. The same holds for Aries, the other equinox sign.

For the couple, at least one partner is a new moon birth by sign in 15.98 percent of cases. At least one is a full moon birth in 15.47 percent. The gaps are small, less than one point. But they come from the shape of Earth’s orbit, and both of our routes find them.
Why a birth date is not enough
The Moon moves fast. It stays in a sign for about 54.6 hours on average, from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. So on 43.92 percent of all days, the Moon changes sign at some hour. A person born on such a day has two possible Moon signs. Only the birth time can settle it.
Free tools fill the gap with a guess, and the usual guess is noon. For one person, a noon chart gives the wrong Moon sign 10.98 percent of the time. That is about one chart in nine. For a couple, the risk nearly doubles. About 20.75 percent of couples get the wrong Moon pair from two noon charts. That is one couple in five.
Put the other way, only about 31 percent of couples have two Moons that are sure from dates alone. If you think you are a Cancer Moon and Libra Moon pair, check both birth times first.
How common is a Cancer Moon and Libra Moon couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in every sign. Over the eight centuries from 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. Cancer and Libra are no rarer than the rest.
So the odds for a random couple are simple. Two people with Moons in two given different signs make about 1 couple in 72. Two people with the same Moon sign make about 1 couple in 144. The tiny gaps between signs are smaller than the error of our method, so we do not rank the Moon pairs by how rare they are.
How we got these numbers
We used two separate routes. They share no code and no star tables.
Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. We found every time the Moon and the Sun changed sign from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. We then added up the time in each sign, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the Moon’s sign every hour over the same eight centuries, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That is more than seven million points. Neither route used random draws.
The two routes agree within 0.04 points on every Moon figure on this page. All shares are for the tropical zodiac, as seen from Earth.
What the research says about sign matches
The best test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. He tested Sun signs, not Moon signs. No study of the same size exists for Moon signs.
So a Cancer Moon and a Libra Moon are not doomed by the square. The symbols give you words for two ways to find peace: through safety and through fairness. What you do with those words is up to you.
