What a Moon sign is, and what a sextile is

To compare two Moons, astrologers count the signs between them. Cancer and Virgo sit two signs apart. That gap is a sextile, an angle of 60 degrees, one sixth of the circle. Ptolemy, the Greek author of the Tetrabiblos, put the sextile with the trine in his group of harmonious angles. He put the square and the opposition in the other group.
A sextile is a softer bond than a trine. Modern writers compare it to a friendly door that stands open. Nobody is pushed through it. Each partner has to choose to walk in.
Water and earth: two signs of the night
Each sign belongs to one of four elements. Cancer is a water sign. Virgo is an earth sign. The old authors split the elements into two teams. Fire and air are masculine, or day signs. Earth and water are feminine, or night signs. Cancer and Virgo are on the same team.
That is the classic reason a sextile works. The two signs differ in element, yet they share a polarity. In plain words, both Moons lean inward. Both prefer to take in the world before they act on it. Water brings the feeling. Earth brings the form.
Think of a garden. Water without soil runs off. Soil without water cracks. Together they grow things. That is the image most astrologers use for water and earth, and it fits this pair well.
A starter and a finisher
Signs also have a mode, which says how they move. Cardinal signs open a season. Fixed signs hold the middle of it. Mutable signs close it and prepare the change. Cancer is cardinal. Virgo is mutable. So one sign starts and the other one wraps up.

Virgo is ruled by Mercury, the planet of thought and speech. Mercury is also exalted in Virgo, which means honored, like a guest given the best seat. The Moon has neither rank here. The Virgo Moon calms down by making things right. It likes order, clear plans and useful help. It shows love by doing small tasks well. When upset, it can turn to worry or to fixing, instead of saying what it feels.
What the pair looks like at home
These two Moons speak different dialects of the same language. Both care through acts. The Cancer Moon cooks the soup. The Virgo Moon checks that the soup has less salt. Both mean “I love you”.
The friction is quiet. The Cancer Moon wants its feelings held, not solved. The Virgo Moon hears a problem and wants to solve it. The Cancer Moon can feel judged. The Virgo Moon can feel that its help is not wanted.

Is the sextile exact?
A sextile by sign is not always a sextile by degree. Each sign spans 30 degrees. So two Moons two signs apart can sit anywhere from 30 to 90 degrees apart. A Moon at 1 degree of Cancer and a Moon at 29 degrees of Virgo are 88 degrees apart. That is almost a square.

These values are the same for every Moon pair, because the Moon spends about the same time in each degree. With the usual 8 degree orb, fewer than half of these couples have a real sextile. And 3.56 percent have a square by degree across the sign line instead. That is about 1 couple in 28. If you know both birth times, check the degrees.
New moon and full moon births in this pair
Some people are born with the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. That is a new moon birth, by sign. Others are born with the Moon in the opposite sign. That is a full moon birth, by sign. Our page on moon phase compatibility covers the exact phases.
These shares are not flat. The Sun moves slowest in early July, when Earth is farthest from it. So the Sun lingers in the summer signs, and the Moon meets it there a little more. Among people with a Cancer Moon, 8.48 percent also have the Sun in Cancer. That is the highest of the twelve signs. For a Virgo Moon, the share is 8.32 percent, close to average.

The gaps are small, less than one point. But they come from the shape of Earth’s orbit, and both of our routes find them. The Cancer side does most of the work here.
Why a birth date is not enough
The Moon moves fast. It stays in a sign for about 54.6 hours on average, from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. So on 43.92 percent of all days, the Moon changes sign at some hour. A person born on such a day has two possible Moon signs. Only the birth time can settle it.
Free tools fill the gap with a guess, and the usual guess is noon. For one person, a noon chart gives the wrong Moon sign 10.98 percent of the time. That is about one chart in nine. For a couple, the risk nearly doubles. About 20.75 percent of couples get the wrong Moon pair from two noon charts. That is one couple in five.
Put the other way, only about 31 percent of couples have two Moons that are sure from dates alone. If you think you are a Cancer Moon and Virgo Moon pair, check both birth times first.
How common is a Cancer Moon and Virgo Moon couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in every sign. Over the eight centuries from 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. Cancer and Virgo are no rarer than the rest.
So the odds for a random couple are simple. Two people with Moons in two given different signs make about 1 couple in 72. Two people with the same Moon sign make about 1 couple in 144. The tiny gaps between signs are smaller than the error of our method, so we do not rank the Moon pairs by how rare they are.
How we got these numbers
We used two separate routes. They share no code and no star tables.
Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. We found every time the Moon and the Sun changed sign from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. We then added up the time in each sign, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the Moon’s sign every hour over the same eight centuries, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That is more than seven million points. Neither route used random draws.
The two routes agree within 0.04 points on every Moon figure on this page. All shares are for the tropical zodiac, as seen from Earth.
What the research says about sign matches
The best test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. He tested Sun signs, not Moon signs. No study of the same size exists for Moon signs.
So a Cancer Moon and a Virgo Moon are not blessed by the sextile. The symbols give you words for two ways of giving care: by feeling and by doing. What you do with those words is up to you.
