Tradition ranks the Moon by sign, and it gives the Moon two strong seats. One is Cancer, the Moon’s own home. The other is Taurus, where the Moon is exalted, an honored guest. Put a Taurus Moon with a Cancer Moon and both partners hold a Moon at full strength. Among the 66 pairs of two different Moon signs, this is the only one where that happens.
The two signs also sit two apart on the wheel. That angle is a sextile, one of the two links Ptolemy counted as harmony. So on paper, this pair ticks the boxes the old books cared about. This page explains those boxes, adds figures from our own count of eight centuries of Moon positions, and shows the one check that can undo the whole match.
First, the honest frame. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. The sociologist David Voas tested love signs in 2007 on about ten million married couples from the census of England and Wales. He found no link between Sun signs and who marries whom. A census has no birth times, so no one has tested Moons this way. Read what follows as a way to talk about needs, not as a forecast.
Two strong seats for one Moon
Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon held when you were born. In a chart it stands for your private self: what calms you, what you need, how you show care.
Each planet has ranks by sign, called dignities. A planet in its own sign, its domicile, is at home. A planet in its exaltation is a guest of honor. Across the wheel from these sit the weak spots, detriment and fall.

The ranks are old. Ptolemy set them out in book one of the Tetrabiblos. He gave Cancer to the Moon because it is the most northern sign, closest to the top of the sky in the Greek world. He gave the Moon its exaltation in Taurus because that is where the young Moon begins to grow after she meets the Sun in Aries. Vettius Valens used the same ranks, and William Lilly listed them again in Christian Astrology in 1647.
Here is the fine point. A home and an exaltation are not the same kind of strength. At home, the Moon is in charge. The Cancer Moon owns its moods and acts on them. As a guest of honor, the Moon is well served but not in charge. The Taurus Moon is calm and steady, and it leans on its host, Venus, the ruler of Taurus.
Why the sextile matters
An aspect is a set angle between two points. Count the signs from one Moon to the other. Taurus to Cancer is two signs, or 60 degrees. That is a sextile.
Ptolemy counted only two aspects as harmony: the sextile and the trine. In his book on marriage, part of book four, he looks for the Sun and Moon of two charts to meet in these angles. Modern Moon matching keeps a small piece of that rule. This pair passes it.
The two signs share more ground. Taurus is earth and Cancer is water. The old grid calls this a good mix, since water makes soil rich. Both signs also belong to the same half of the zodiac, the quiet or “feminine” signs, which look inward. Where they differ is in mode. Taurus is fixed, steady and slow to change. Cancer is cardinal, a sign that starts things when a season turns.

What the pair looks like day to day
Stephen Arroyo, in his 1975 book on the four elements, reads earth as the practical world and water as the world of feeling. In this pair each one feeds the other. The Cancer Moon picks up a mood before a word is said. The Taurus Moon turns that mood into something solid, like dinner or a quiet night in.
- Home is the center for both of you. Neither needs to be sold on a night in.
- The Cancer Moon remembers dates and small stories. The Taurus Moon keeps the rituals going year after year.
- When one of you is sad, the Cancer Moon asks and the Taurus Moon cooks.
- Money and safety matter to both. You rarely fight about saving.
- Family, pets and old friends fill the house. You both like it that way.
Where it rubs
The friction sits in the modes. A cardinal Moon moves first when it feels hurt. The Cancer Moon can pull back into its shell, then come out and want to talk it through. A fixed Moon moves last. The Taurus Moon can go still and wait, and the wait can feel cold to the Cancer partner.
Moods are the other test. The Cancer Moon rises and falls like a tide. The Taurus Moon likes the same level every day. A Taurus Moon can read a mood swing as a crisis. A Cancer Moon can read calm as a lack of care.
Both Moons also hold on. Cancer holds memories, and Taurus holds routines and grudges. Letting go of an old hurt is slow work for this pair. None of this is fate. These are the questions the old reading raises, and a couple can answer them.
How close is the sextile, really?
A sign is a slice of thirty degrees. Two Moons in Taurus and Cancer can be anywhere from 31 to 89 degrees apart. The sextile is exact at 60. Astrologers only count it as a tight link when the gap from 60 is small. That allowed gap is called the orb.

We assume each Moon can sit at any degree of its sign with the same chance. Our hourly count of real positions gave the same shares. There is one more case. A Moon at the start of Taurus and a Moon at the end of Cancer are close to 90 degrees apart. By degree that is a square, a hard angle, even though the signs form a sextile. It happens within 8 degrees for 3.56 percent of these couples.
The check that can undo the match
This is where many Taurus-Cancer couples go wrong without knowing it. The Moon stays in one sign for 54.6 hours on average, between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. On 43.92 percent of days it changes sign during the day. On those days a date gives two possible Moon signs.
Free tools that ask only for a date guess noon. From 1600 to 2400, noon gives the wrong Moon sign 10.98 percent of the time, about one chart in nine. For a couple, at least one Moon is wrong in 20.75 percent of cases, about one in five. Only 31.45 percent of couples can know both Moons from their dates alone.
A wrong noon Moon is always one sign off, since no day holds two sign changes. Look at what that does here. A “Taurus” Moon can really be Aries or Gemini. A “Cancer” Moon can really be Gemini or Leo. So one wrong hour can turn this sextile into a square, such as Aries with Cancer or Taurus with Leo. It can also turn it into Taurus with Gemini, a pair Ptolemy called disjunct. New Moon and Full Moon births
One figure does change by sign, and it holds in both of our routes. It is the Moon’s phase at birth. When the Sun and Moon share a sign, you were born near a New Moon. When they sit in opposite signs, you were born near a Full Moon.

Cancer holds both records. Of all twelve Moon signs, it has the highest share of New Moon births and the lowest share of Full Moon births. The reason is the Sun’s pace. The Sun moves slowest in early July, when the Earth is farthest from it. So the Sun lingers in Cancer, and a Cancer Moon finds it there more than in any other sign. For this pair, 16.12 percent of couples include at least one partner born with Sun and Moon in the same sign. In 15.32 percent, at least one was born with them opposite. How we measured it
We used two separate routes over the same window, from 1600 to 2400 in Universal Time. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every Moon sign change to within a tenth of a second and added up the exact time in each sign. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the Moon once an hour, on a grid set half an hour apart from the first. Neither route used random draws. They agree to within 0.04 of a point on every share here.
Noon charts use noon in Universal Time. Couples are built from two random births. The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign, 8.33 to 8.34 percent. So this pair turns up in about one couple in 72, like every mixed pair. The gaps between pairs are too small to rank one above another.
