Cancer Moon and Leo Moon compatibility starts with two famous houses. In the old texts, Cancer is the home of the Moon and Leo is the home of the Sun. Yet Ptolemy, the author of the oldest astrology manual we still read, says these two signs are turned away from each other. They share a wall, but they do not look at each other.

What a Moon sign is
Your Moon sign is the slice of sky the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your inner weather. It shows what calms you, what you need when you are tired, and how you show care. Our guide to moon sign compatibility sets out the method and the old rules behind it.
To compare two Moons, astrologers count the signs between them. Cancer and Leo sit one sign apart. That gap is called a semi-sextile, an angle of 30 degrees. Ptolemy never used it. It came much later, and most modern writers call it a mild link at best.
Why the two lights got Cancer and Leo
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria in the second century. In chapter 17 of book one, he explains why each planet rules its signs. He starts with the Sun and the Moon.
His reason is simple. Cancer and Leo are the most northern signs. In his part of the world, the Sun stands highest in the sky when it passes through them. Those weeks bring the most heat and the longest days. So the ancients gave these two signs to the two greatest bodies in the sky.
Leo, a masculine sign, went to the Sun. Cancer, a feminine sign, went to the Moon. From there, each planet got one sign on each side, in order of speed, out to Saturn with Capricorn and Aquarius.
So in this pair, each Moon sits in the house of a light. The Cancer Moon sits in its own house. The Leo Moon sits in the house of the Sun, its partner in the sky.
Next door, but turned away
Here is the twist. Ptolemy links signs in four ways. There are the classic aspects: the sextile, the square, the trine and the opposition. There are signs that command and obey each other. There are signs that behold each other because they share the same length of day. And there are signs with none of these links.
He calls the last group disjunct, which means cut off. In chapter 16 he says these signs sit one or five signs apart. Signs that sit side by side are, in his words, averted from one another. Think of two people on a bench who face opposite ways.
Cancer and Leo pass every test for that label. Only 16 of the 78 pairs of signs are cut off in this strict way. Cancer and Leo is the only one made of the two houses of the lights.

What “turned away” can mean for two Moons
An averted pair does not mean a bad pair. It means the two signs do not read each other by default. Each one has to turn around to see the other.
Read in symbols, that fits these two Moons. The Cancer Moon looks inward, to the home. The Leo Moon looks outward, to the people who see it shine. Both are warm, but the warmth points two ways.
So the task of this pair is to turn around on purpose. Neighbors have one asset: they are close, even when they face away.

The Leo Moon: a guest in the Sun’s house
Leo is ruled by the Sun. The Moon has no rank there. Astrologers call such a planet peregrine, which means a wanderer. It is not weak. It simply gets no special help from the sign.

What the pair looks like at home
The two signs differ in mode as well. Cancer is cardinal, a sign that opens a season and starts things. Leo is fixed, a sign that holds a course. In a fight, the Cancer Moon retreats, and the Leo Moon stands its ground.
The friction is easy to picture. The Cancer Moon wants a quiet night in. The Leo Moon wants to be seen and praised. Each can feel that the other looks the wrong way.
The bond is just as easy to picture. Both Moons love a warm home. Both are loyal. Both care deeply about the people they claim as their own. Here are four habits that fit the symbols.

When the sign line hides a close pair
A pair by sign is not always the same pair by degree. Each sign spans 30 degrees. So two Moons one sign apart can sit anywhere from 0 to 60 degrees apart.
Picture one Moon at 29 degrees of Cancer and the other at 1 degree of Leo. By sign, they are turned away. By degree, they are only 2 degrees apart. That is a conjunction, the closest bond there is. Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle, called an orb. With the usual 8 degree orb, here is what we find.

So about 1 couple in 28 has two Moons fused across the border, and just as many form a sextile by degree. Those couples read very differently from the sign label. If you know both birth times, check the degrees.
Near the top for new moons, near the bottom for full moons
Some people are born with the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. That is a new moon birth, by sign. Others are born with the Moon in the opposite sign. That is a full moon birth, by sign. Our page on moon phase compatibility covers the exact phases.
These shares are not the same for every sign. The Sun moves slowest in early July, when Earth is farthest from it. So the Sun lingers in Cancer and Leo, and the Moon meets it there a little more. Among people with a Cancer Moon, 8.48 percent also have the Sun in Cancer. That is the highest of all twelve signs. For a Leo Moon, the share is 8.43 percent.
So in 16.2 percent of Cancer Moon and Leo Moon couples, at least one partner is a new moon birth by sign. Only two pairs out of 78 score higher: Cancer with Cancer, and Gemini with Cancer. The full moon side runs the other way. Here it is 15.25 percent, which ranks 76th out of 78.

The gaps are small, less than one point. But they come from the shape of Earth’s orbit, and both of our routes find them.
Why a birth date is not enough
The Moon moves fast. It stays in a sign for about 54.6 hours on average, from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. So on 43.92 percent of all days, the Moon changes sign at some hour. A person born on such a day has two possible Moon signs. Only the birth time can settle it.
Free tools fill the gap with a guess, and the usual guess is noon. For one person, a noon chart gives the wrong Moon sign 10.98 percent of the time. That is about one chart in nine. For a couple, the risk nearly doubles. About 20.75 percent of couples get the wrong Moon pair from two noon charts. That is one couple in five.
Put the other way, only about 31 percent of couples have two Moons that are sure from dates alone. A Cancer Moon born late on its day can be a Leo Moon. Check both birth times first.
How common is a Cancer Moon and Leo Moon couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in every sign. Over the eight centuries from 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. Cancer and Leo are no rarer than the rest.
So the odds for a random couple are simple. Two people with Moons in two given different signs make about 1 couple in 72. Two people with the same Moon sign make about 1 couple in 144. The tiny gaps between signs are smaller than the error of our method, so we do not rank the Moon pairs by how rare they are.
How we got these numbers
We used two separate routes. They share no code and no star tables.
Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. We found every time the Moon and the Sun changed sign from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. We then added up the time in each sign, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the Moon’s sign every hour over the same eight centuries, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That is more than seven million points. Neither route used random draws.
The two routes agree within 0.04 points on every Moon figure on this page. All shares are for the tropical zodiac, as seen from Earth.
What the research says about sign matches
The best test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. He tested Sun signs, not Moon signs. No study of the same size exists for Moon signs.
So a Cancer Moon and a Leo Moon are not doomed because their signs face away. They are not blessed because their signs are royal houses either. The symbols give you words for two ways of needing care. What you do with those words is up to you.
