Taurus Moon and Capricorn Moon compatibility looks easy on paper. Both Moons sit in earth signs, four signs apart. Astrologers call that link a trine, the smoothest angle in the old books. Ptolemy counted it as harmony.
Look at the old ranks, though, and the pair splits in two. The Moon is exalted in Taurus, a place of honor. It is in detriment in Capricorn, the sign facing its own home. So this couple joins the Moon at its proudest and the Moon far from home, inside the easiest link there is.
We also measured a strange fact. A Capricorn Moon is born near a full moon more than any other Moon sign. And at that full moon, the Sun sits in Cancer, the Moon’s own home. This page explains both, with the method.

What astrology cannot tell you
Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. The largest test of love signs came from the sociologist David Voas in 2007. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales, with 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom.
No one can run that test on Moon signs, since a census has no birth times. So treat this page as a map of old ideas and real sky facts. It is there to start a talk, not to grade your couple.
Harmony by angle
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 13, he calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. His reason is that both join signs of the same kind. Taurus and Capricorn are both what he calls feminine signs, a label for receptive signs, not for gender.
In Book 4, on marriage, he goes further. He says unions last when the Sun and Moon of the two charts sit in trine or sextile. Modern Moon matching keeps a piece of that rule, the Moon of one chart against the Moon of the other.
The element adds to the harmony. Earth is the element of the body, work and things you can hold. Two earth Moons share a plain, practical idea of care. A job done and a bill paid count as love for both.

Old astrology also rates how comfortable a planet is in each sign. Ptolemy set out the ranks, and William Lilly repeated them in Christian Astrology in 1647.
Taurus: the honored guest
The Moon is exalted in Taurus. Exaltation is the sign where a planet is honored, like a guest of state. The Taurus Moon calms through the senses: good food, rest, touch and a stable routine. Our guide to the Moon in Taurus covers it in full.
Capricorn: the guest in someone else’s house
The Moon’s home is Cancer. The sign straight across the wheel, Capricorn, is its detriment. A planet in detriment is like a guest in a house with rules it did not write. Saturn rules Capricorn, and Saturn stands for limits, duty and time.
In Book 1, chapter 17, Ptolemy explains why. The Sun and Moon, the two lights, own Leo and Cancer. Saturn, the coldest and farthest planet he knew, gets the two signs opposite them, Capricorn and Aquarius. Cold faces warmth across the wheel.

A rare mix
Only two of the 12 trine pairs join a Moon in dignity with a Moon in debility. This one joins exaltation and detriment. The other, Cancer and Scorpio, joins the Moon’s home and its fall.
The full moon fact
Here is what we measured. A person born near a new moon has the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. A person born near a full moon has the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun. For most signs, the two cases are close. For Capricorn, they are not.

The Capricorn Moon has the lowest new moon share of the twelve signs, and the highest full moon share. At that full moon, the Sun sits in Cancer. That is the sign the Moon itself rules.
The cause is the Earth’s orbit. The Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July, so the Sun moves slowest then. Over the years 1600 to 2400, it spent 31.45 days in Cancer on average, the longest of any sign. It spent 29.45 days in Capricorn, the shortest. The Moon in Capricorn faces the Sun in Cancer on more birthdays than any other Moon faces its opposite.
The Taurus Moon leans the other way. It shares its sign with the Sun more than it faces a Scorpio Sun, since the Sun lingers in Taurus in spring.
For the couple, 15.84 percent include at least one partner born with the Moon opposite their Sun. In 15.63 percent, at least one partner has the Moon in their own Sun sign. The gap is small, about a fifth of a point. It will not decide anything, but it is a true feature of the sky.

Two earth Moons at work
The two Moons agree on the basics. Both prefer deeds to speeches. Both want a secure base and a plan. Both are slow to trust and slow to leave.
They differ in mode. Taurus is a fixed sign, which holds on to what works. Capricorn is a cardinal sign, which starts things and aims for a goal. The Taurus Moon wants to enjoy what they have built. The Capricorn Moon wants to build the next floor.
That can feel like harmony with a hidden cost. One partner rests while the other plans. Neither sees the other as wrong, but each can feel a little alone. Among the 78 Moon pairs, this is the only earth trine between a fixed and a cardinal sign.

How many couples have an exact trine?
A trine by sign is not always 120 degrees in the sky. Astrologers allow a margin around the exact angle, called an orb. The Moon moves at a near even pace through each sign, so geometry gives the share of couples inside it. We checked it on the true spread of Moon positions over eight centuries.

These shares hold for every Moon pair, so they are geometry, not a trait of this one. One edge case is special. An early Taurus Moon and a late Capricorn Moon can sit about 90 degrees apart. That is a real square inside a trine by sign. It happens in 3.56 percent of couples at an 8 degree orb.
Check both Moons first
A reading needs two correct Moon signs. The Moon stays in a sign for 54.6 hours on average, and changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. A birth on such a day has two possible Moons.
Tools with no birth time use noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign in 10.98 percent of charts. For a couple, it gives the wrong pair in about 1 case in 5. Only 31 percent of couples have both Moons fixed by their dates alone. Our pivot page on Moon sign compatibility gives the full count.
For this pair, a Taurus Moon near a sign change might be an Aries or Gemini Moon. A Capricorn Moon might be a Sagittarius or Aquarius Moon. The birth time settles it.

How we measured
We used two separate routes over the years 1600 to 2400, with all moments weighted the same. Route one used the astronomy-engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun to within a tenth of a second, then added up the exact time in each case. Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris and checked the sky once an hour, on a grid shifted by half an hour. The two routes agree to within 0.05 points.
The Sun’s days per sign are averages of all its passages. The noon test uses calendar days in Greenwich time, with a chart at 12:00. For the old rules, we read the Tetrabiblos, Book 1, chapters 13 to 19, and Book 4, in the Robbins translation, and Lilly’s Christian Astrology.
