What a Moon sign shows
Your Moon sign is the sign the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your private self. It is the part of you that reacts before you think. It shows what soothes you and how you look after the people you love.
Two Moons are compared by the number of signs between them. When both sit in the same sign, the distance is zero. Astrologers call this a conjunction by sign. Our moon sign compatibility guide covers every distance between two Moons.
Two Moons in exile
Tradition gives each planet four special signs. The home is where the planet rules. The exaltation is where it is an honored guest. The exile sits opposite the home. The fall sits opposite the exaltation. For the Moon, these are Cancer, Taurus, Capricorn, and Scorpio.
Ptolemy, the Greek scholar who wrote the Tetrabiblos around 150 AD, gave the two lights the two summer signs. Leo went to the Sun and Cancer went to the Moon. Saturn, the coldest planet he knew, got the two signs across from them. Capricorn faces Cancer, and Aquarius faces Leo. William Lilly kept the same map in his Christian Astrology of 1647.
So a Capricorn Moon is in exile. The Moon is soft, moist, and quick to change. Capricorn is cold, dry, and slow. The guest wants comfort, and the house wants rules. Among the 78 Moon pairs, only three put both Moons in a weak sign. This is one. The other two are Scorpio with Scorpio and Scorpio with Capricorn.
A small help after dark
Exile is not the whole picture. In Book 1 of the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy also sorts the signs into four triangles, one per element. He gives the earth triangle of Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn to Venus by day and to the Moon by night. Lilly repeats this in his table.
A night birth means the Sun was below the horizon. For a Capricorn Moon born at night, the Moon holds this minor rank, called triplicity, in its own exile. It does not undo the exile. It gives the guest one key to the house.
In a couple, this can split. One partner born by day and one born by night have the same Moon sign, but not the same standing in the old reading. Your birth hour decides it.
One host for both Moons: Saturn
Every sign has a ruling planet, the host of anything placed there. Saturn rules Capricorn. So both Moons answer to the same host. In old texts, Saturn stands for time, limits, and duty. It is slow, and it builds to last.
A shared host is a shared language. Both Moons feel safe when a plan is in place. Both show love by doing, not by saying. Both keep their word, and both notice when the other does not. Neither needs to be told that care can look like a paid bill or a fixed shelf.
The cost hides in the same place. Two Saturn-led Moons can run a home like a firm. Tasks get done, and feelings wait their turn. When both partners wait, the turn does not come.
The record for full moon births

For a Capricorn Moon, a new moon birth needs the Sun in Capricorn. A full moon birth needs the Sun in Cancer, the sign across. Here are the shares, measured over 800 years.

The cause is the Sun’s speed. The Earth’s orbit is not a perfect circle. So the Sun seems to move fastest in early January and slowest in early July. From 1600 to 2400, it spends about 29.4 days in Capricorn, its shortest stay. It spends about 31.5 days in Cancer, its longest.

In a couple, the lean doubles. 16.24 percent of Capricorn Moon and Capricorn Moon couples include at least one full moon birth. That is the highest of all 78 pairs. Only 15.25 percent include at least one new moon birth. That is the lowest of all 78.
Read as a symbol, a full moon is a peak, not a start. The light is full and the Sun and Moon face each other. Two Capricorn Moons are more likely than any other couple to carry that face-to-face image. The gap is small, about one point. It is real in the sky, but it is not a rule about people.
How close are the two Moons?
A conjunction by sign is not always a conjunction by degree. A Moon at 1 degree of Capricorn and a Moon at 29 degrees of Capricorn share the sign. Yet they sit 28 degrees apart. Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle. That slack is called an orb.

These values hold for every Moon pair, because the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. So with an 8 degree orb, fewer than half of these couples have Moons that truly meet. The rest share a sign and a host, but not a point.
What Ptolemy’s quiet links say
Ptolemy names two quiet ties between signs. Some signs “command and obey”. Others “behold” each other, which means they see each other on equal terms. His list can be read two ways.
- By degree, as Lilly read it, signs behold each other when they mirror across the solstice points. Those mirror points are called antiscia. Capricorn’s mirror is Sagittarius. Two Capricorn Moons mirror each other only near 0 degrees of Capricorn, in 0.5 percent of couples within 3 degrees.
- By whole signs, as F. E. Robbins lists them in the Loeb edition (note 83), five pairs of signs behold each other. Cancer and Capricorn are the two signs left without a partner. Robbins’ note 80 adds that Cancer commands Capricorn.
So on the whole-sign reading, the one sign Capricorn answers to is Cancer, the Moon’s own home. Read as a symbol, two Capricorn Moons do not lean on each other for comfort. They look across the wheel for it.
What each partner brings
Capricorn is earth, the element of the body and of things you can hold. It is cardinal, so it opens a season: the northern winter. Among the 78 Moon pairs, this is the only one with both Moons in cardinal earth.
A Capricorn Moon calms down by taking charge. It makes a list, sets a plan, and works through it. It shows love by being there, on time, year after year. When upset, it goes quiet and keeps working. It rarely asks for help, and it rarely says it is tired.
Two of them in one home make a steady team. Bills are paid. Plans are kept. Neither partner makes a scene. The risk sits in what goes unsaid. Each can wait for the other to speak first, and both are good at waiting.

How common is a Capricorn Moon and Capricorn Moon couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. Any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. We do not rank the Moon pairs by how common they are. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.

Check the hour before you trust the sign
The Moon stays in one sign for 54.6 hours on average, and between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. On 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour. A Capricorn Moon born early in the day could be a Sagittarius Moon. A Capricorn Moon born late could be an Aquarius Moon.
Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. Two noon charts give the wrong Moon pair to 20.75 percent of couples, about one couple in five. The hour also decides the night rank above. So a birth time matters twice for this pair.
How we measured
We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. It then summed the time, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. The Sun’s days per sign are averages over 1600 to 2400, the site’s reference window. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
What the research says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.
So the exile, the shared host, and the full moon record are not warnings. They are symbols. Two Capricorn Moons build with care and keep their word. The symbols point to where that shared strength helps, and where one of them has to put down the list and speak first.
