Two Moons that hold on

Home twice: what domicile means
Tradition gives each planet signs where it is strong or weak. These ranks are called dignities. Ptolemy set them out in Book 1 of the Tetrabiblos, around 150 AD. William Lilly gave the same list in Christian Astrology in 1647.
For the Moon, the list is short. It rules Cancer. It is exalted, or honored, in Taurus. It is weak in Capricorn, across from its home. It falls in Scorpio, across from its exaltation.

A planet at home is its own host. It answers to no other planet. Astrologers call the ruler of a sign the dispositor. For a Cancer Moon, the dispositor is the Moon itself. Read as a symbol, each partner’s feelings stand on their own feet. Neither Moon has to borrow a style from another planet.
That is a strength and a risk. The strength is ease. Each partner knows what they need. The risk is that each one expects the other to need the same thing, in the same way, at the same time.
Why this pair leans toward the new moon
Some people are born with the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. That is near a new moon. Others are born with the Moon in the sign across from the Sun. That is near a full moon.
Across all signs, each case covers about 8.2 in 100 births. But the share shifts by sign, and the shift is real. It does not come from noise in our counts.

Here is the reason. A Cancer Moon at a new moon needs the Sun in Cancer too. The Earth moves slowest around the Sun in early July. So the Sun lingers in Cancer, and the Moon has more time to catch it there.
A Cancer Moon at a full moon needs the Sun in Capricorn. The Earth moves fastest in early January. So the Sun rushes through Capricorn, its shortest stay of the year. That gives the Moon less time to stand across from it.
Now take two Cancer Moons. The chance that at least one partner was born near a new moon is 16.24 in 100. That is the top value of all 78 Moon pairs. The chance that at least one was born near a full moon is 15.21 in 100. That is the lowest of all 78.
The gap is small. It is about half a couple in a hundred above a typical pair. But it is steady, and both of our counting routes show it. Our guide to moon phase compatibility shows how to find each partner’s phase.
Read as a symbol, a new moon birth is a start. The Sun and Moon stand together, and the Moon’s light is hidden. Astrologers link it to instinct more than to reflection. In this pair, the old image of two private people, both looking inward, gets a small push.
Same sign, but how close?
Two Moons in Cancer form a conjunction by sign. That does not mean they sit together. The real gap runs from 0 to 30 degrees, depending on where each Moon falls.
The Moon spreads evenly through each sign. So the share of couples near an exact conjunction is simple to work out.

These shares hold for every same-sign Moon pair. The plain result is that more than half of all Cancer Moon couples are not close in degrees. They share a sign, not a spot.
The old books add one more link, based on mirror points. Lilly calls them antiscia. Two degrees are mirrors when they sit at the same distance from the summer solstice point, one on each side. Cancer’s mirror sign is Gemini. So two Cancer Moons almost never mirror each other. Only about half a couple in 100 comes within 3 degrees of that.
What Ptolemy adds, and does not
Ptolemy calls Cancer a solstice sign. In Book 1, chapter 11, he says the Sun “turns” as it enters Cancer, which brings summer. So both Moons here sit in a sign that starts a season. Modern books call that cardinal.
Ptolemy has one more rule, in chapter 15. Signs the same distance from a solstice sign “behold” each other. Counted by whole signs, the Robbins notes leave Cancer without a partner. Our page on Cancer and Cancer Sun sign compatibility walks through those notes for two Suns.
So the old texts give this pair its dignity and its season. They do not give it a special bond beyond the shared sign.
Can you trust your Moon pair?
The Moon spends about 54.6 hours in each sign on average, from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. It changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. On those days, a birth date alone gives two possible Moon signs.
Free tools set the birth time to noon. Over the years 1600 through 2400, that guess gives the wrong Moon sign 10.98 percent of the time. For a couple, both guesses must be right. How we counted
Every figure here comes from one table of 78 Moon pairs, built for this site. It covers every moment from the year 1600 to the year 2400, in the tropical zodiac, as seen from the Earth. Two separate routes built it.
The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each Moon sign change to a tenth of a second and summed the exact time in each sign. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris, on an hourly grid set half an hour apart from the first. No random draws were used. Days and noon charts use Greenwich time.
The two routes agree within 0.05 points on every Moon figure. That check sets a limit. Each Moon sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of all time. The gap between signs is smaller than the gap between routes. So we do not rank Moon pairs by rarity. Any two Moons in the same sign meet in about 1 couple in 144. The new moon and full moon shares are different. They come from the Sun’s pace, and they are larger than the gap between routes.
What the evidence says about love signs
The largest test of sign matching used the Sun, not the Moon. In 2007 the sociologist David Voas studied the 2001 census of England and Wales. He looked at about 10.3 million married couples. He found no link between Sun signs and who marries whom.
He did find a small excess of same-sign couples. It came from errors in filling in the forms, not from the stars. Our page on Virgo and Virgo Sun sign compatibility tells that story.
