Cancer Moon and Capricorn Moon compatibility sits on the most telling line of the zodiac. Cancer is the Moon’s home. Capricorn, straight across the wheel, is the Moon’s exile. This couple joins the Moon at its most natural and the Moon at its least.
The two signs mark the two solstices. The Sun enters Cancer on the longest day of the year and Capricorn on the shortest. So the couple faces each other across summer and winter, warmth and cold, a nest and a wall.

Before anything: what astrology is not
Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will fare. The largest test of love signs came from the sociologist David Voas in 2007. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales, with 10.3 million married couples. Sun signs had no effect on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors on the forms.
Moon signs need birth times, and a census has none. So treat this page as a guide to old ideas and real sky facts, not as a verdict on your couple.
The dignity axis
Old astrology grades how comfortable a planet is in each sign. These grades are called dignities. Ptolemy set them out in the Tetrabiblos, written in Alexandria around 150 AD. William Lilly listed them again in Christian Astrology in 1647.
Why Cancer is home
In Book 1, chapter 17, Ptolemy gives the two lights the two most northern signs. These are the signs closest to the top of the sky in summer. Leo went to the Sun and Cancer went to the Moon. Why Capricorn is exile
Ptolemy then hands out the other signs in order. Saturn is the coldest and farthest planet he knew. So Saturn gets the two signs opposite the lights: Capricorn, across from Cancer, and Aquarius, across from Leo. Cold faces warmth across the wheel.
The sign opposite a planet’s home is its exile, also called detriment. A planet in exile is like a guest in a house with rules it did not write. The Moon is moist, soft and quick to change. The rulers swap places
The same line works the other way. Saturn rules Capricorn, and Saturn is in exile in Cancer. So each partner’s Moon sits in the sign where the other sign’s ruler is least at home. The Cancer Moon lives on ground that makes Saturn uneasy. The Capricorn Moon lives on ground that makes the Moon uneasy.
Among the 78 Moon pairs, this is the only one that joins the Moon’s home with its exile. It is the dignity axis itself, drawn as a couple.
A small counterweight
Exile is not the full story for a Capricorn Moon. In chapter 18, Ptolemy groups the signs into four triangles, one per element. He gives the earth triangle, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, to the Moon by night and Venus by day. So the Moon keeps a share in Capricorn’s element, even in exile. For a night birth, that share counts a little more in the old method.
The solstice line
Both signs are cardinal. A cardinal sign opens a season. Cancer opens summer in the north, and Capricorn opens winter. Ptolemy calls these two the tropical signs, from a Greek word for turning. At each one, the Sun turns back.
In practice, both Moons like to act, not wait. Both want to lead the plan. The Cancer Moon leads with care for the people inside the home. The Capricorn Moon leads with care for the structure that keeps the home up. When both push at once, the opposition shows.
The elements help more than the angle does. Water and earth are both feminine signs in Ptolemy’s scheme, an old label for the receptive signs. Water gives earth life, and earth gives water a shape. That is why many readers count this opposition among the easier ones.
What Ptolemy says about the pair
In Book 1, chapter 13, Ptolemy names four aspects. An aspect is a fixed angle between two points in the sky. He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious, and the square and the opposition hard. An opposition joins signs that face each other on one straight line.
His next two chapters add ties of rank. His translator, Frank Robbins, spells out the pairs in two notes.

The first rule pairs signs at the same distance from Aries, the sign of the spring equinox. Cancer is three signs after Aries, and Capricorn is three signs before it. The sign in the summer half of the year commands, because its days are longer. So by that list, the Cancer Moon holds the lead.
The second rule pairs signs whose days are the same length. Cancer has the longest days and Capricorn the shortest. No other sign matches either one. So these two stand alone, each at an end of the year. Read as a symbol, each partner holds an extreme the other cannot copy.

What we measured: the Sun in Cancer, twice
A person born near a new moon has the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. A person born near a full moon has the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun. We counted both cases for each Moon sign over the years 1600 to 2400.

The table is a perfect mirror. The Cancer Moon has the highest new moon share of all twelve signs. The Capricorn Moon has the highest full moon share. In both top cases, the Sun sits in Cancer. In both bottom cases, the Sun sits in Capricorn.
The cause is the Earth’s orbit. The Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July, so the Sun moves slowest then. It lingers in Cancer. Six months later, near the start of January, the Earth is closest and the Sun rushes through Capricorn. So a Moon has more chances to meet or face a Cancer Sun than a Capricorn Sun.
For the couple, the two effects cancel out. In 15.75 percent of couples, at least one partner has the Moon in their own Sun sign. In 15.73 percent, at least one partner has the Moon opposite their Sun. Tradition reads a new moon birth as will and needs pointing one way, and a full moon birth as a pull between them. This couple has both in near equal measure.

How many couples have an exact opposition?
An opposition by sign is not always 180 degrees in the sky. Astrologers allow a margin around the exact angle, called an orb. The Moon moves at a near even pace through each sign, so geometry gives the share of couples inside each orb.

These shares hold for every Moon pair. One point is special, though. For signs six apart, no other major aspect can form across the sign line. Every Cancer and Capricorn Moon couple stays between 150 and 210 degrees apart. The opposition is the only classic aspect in reach.
Check both Moons first
Every mixed Moon pair shows up in about 1 couple in 72. The Moon spends close to the same time in each sign, so no Moon pair is rare. Same-sign pairs come to about 1 couple in 144.
The birth time matters more. The Moon stays in a sign for 54.6 hours on average, and changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. Free tools with no birth time use noon. How we measured
We used two separate routes over the years 1600 to 2400, with every moment given the same weight. Route one used the astronomy-engine library. It found each sign change of the Moon and the Sun to a tenth of a second, then added up the exact time in each case. Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris and checked the sky once an hour, on a grid shifted by half an hour. The two routes agree to within 0.05 points.
The noon test uses calendar days in Greenwich time, with a chart at 12:00. For the old rules, we read the Tetrabiblos, Book 1, chapters 13 to 19, in the Robbins translation, with his notes 80 and 83. We checked the ranks against Lilly’s Christian Astrology.
