The method is simple. You count the signs between the two Moons. Each distance has a name and a meaning. Taurus and Virgo are four signs apart, so they form a trine. In book one of the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. A trine joins two signs of the same element, so the pair starts from a shared way of being.
Two night signs for a night planet
Ptolemy splits the twelve signs into two kinds, one after the other around the wheel. Aries is masculine and diurnal, or of the day. Taurus is feminine and nocturnal, or of the night. The pattern goes on in turn. So Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces are the night signs.
He also sorts the planets. The Moon and Venus are feminine. The Moon leads the planets of the night. Later authors read a planet in a sign of its own kind as more at ease. It is a small point, not a major rank. But it fits this pair well.
So a Taurus Moon and a Virgo Moon are both night Moons in night signs. Compare that with a Taurus Moon and Leo Moon couple, where the Leo Moon sits in a day sign ruled by the Sun. Of the 66 pairs of two different Moon signs, 15 join two night signs. Six of those 15 are trines, three in earth and three in water. This is one of the earth three.
The Taurus Moon: exalted and steady
Tradition names signs where each planet does well. The Moon’s home is Cancer. Its exaltation is Taurus. An exalted planet is like an honored guest. It is not at home, but it gets the best seat. A Taurus Moon wants calm it can touch. It likes routine, good food and a soft chair. It shows love by being there, day after day. When upset, it slows down and goes quiet. It is hard to push, and it is slow to forgive a real hurt.
The Virgo Moon: careful, and not weak
The Moon has no rank in Virgo. Astrologers call such a planet peregrine, which means a wanderer. Some modern guides call the Virgo Moon weak. Our page on the Moon in Virgo shows that the old sources say no such thing.
A Virgo Moon calms down by sorting things out. It shows love through useful help. It notices what is broken and wants to fix it. When upset, it makes lists, cleans, or worries. It can sound critical when it is only trying to help.
What the trine looks like at home
Earth signs trust what they can see and touch. Both Moons here want a home that works, with meals on time and bills paid. Neither one needs drama to feel loved. That is the shared ground of the trine.
The two modes add the texture. Taurus is fixed. It holds a course and resists change. Virgo is mutable. It adapts, adjusts and improves. In a good week, Virgo tunes the routine and Taurus keeps it going. In a bad week, Virgo keeps fixing what Taurus wants left alone.
The rulers add one more layer. Venus rules Taurus. Mercury rules Virgo. In the old scheme, Virgo is also the sign of Venus’s fall, the place where Venus has the least ease. Read as a symbol, the Virgo Moon can question the comfort that the Taurus Moon holds dear. “Do we need a new sofa?” can start a longer talk than it should.

Is the trine exact?
A trine by sign is not always a trine by degree. A Moon at 29 degrees of Taurus and a Moon at 1 degree of Virgo are four signs apart. Yet the real gap is only 92 degrees. That is closer to a square.
Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle, called an orb. Here is how often a trine by sign is also a true trine.

These values hold for every Moon pair. The Moon spends about the same time in each degree, so the math is plain. With the common 8 degree orb, fewer than half of Taurus Moon and Virgo Moon couples have an exact trine. In 3.56 percent, the two Moons form a square across the sign line instead.
How common is a Taurus Moon and Virgo Moon couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. The gaps are too small to matter.
So for a random couple, any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank the Moon pairs. The tiny gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.
Check your Moons before you read on
The Moon moves fast. It stays in one sign for about 54.6 hours on average. So on 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour. A person born on such a day has two possible Moon signs.
Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. For a couple, two guesses are in play. About 20.7 percent of couples get the wrong Moon pair from two noon charts. That is one couple in five.
Only about 31 percent of couples have both Moons fixed by the date alone. A Virgo Moon born late in the day could be a Libra Moon. A Taurus Moon born early could be an Aries Moon. A birth time settles it.
New moon and full moon births in this pair
A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For the exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.
These shares change with the season. The Sun moves more slowly in the northern summer. So the Moon meets it more often in the signs of late spring and summer. Among Taurus Moons, 8.35 percent also have the Sun in Taurus. Among Virgo Moons, 8.32 percent also have the Sun in Virgo.
Put together, 15.98 percent of Taurus Moon and Virgo Moon couples include at least one new moon birth. That is at the top of the twelve trine pairs, a hair ahead of Gemini and Libra and of Aries and Leo. The full moon side is lower, at 15.45 percent. Those partners have the Sun in Scorpio or in Pisces.
How we measured
We used two routes that share no code and no star tables.
Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon, the Sun and Venus from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. Time in each sign was then summed interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers.
On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
What the research says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, was published in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.
So the easy trine is not a promise. It is a shared vocabulary. A Taurus Moon and a Virgo Moon both speak the language of care through acts. The symbols suggest where they meet, and where one fixes what the other wants kept.
