Taurus Moon and Leo Moon compatibility starts with a paradox. Most guides call this pair a square, the hard angle of the zodiac. Yet the oldest rule book in astrology puts Taurus and Leo in a small, friendly club. Ptolemy says these two signs “behold” each other. Only six pairs of signs share that bond, and just two of them are squares.

What a Moon sign is, and why this pair gets two labels
Your Moon sign is the slice of sky the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your inner weather. It shows what calms you, what you need when you are tired, and how you show care. To compare two Moons, astrologers count the signs between them. Taurus and Leo sit three signs apart. That distance is called a square. A square is an angle of 90 degrees, a quarter of the circle. Ptolemy, the Greek author of the Tetrabiblos, sorted the angles into two groups. He called the trine and the sextile harmonious. He called the square and the opposition disharmonious. So by the plain rule, a Taurus Moon and a Leo Moon clash.
But Ptolemy had more than one rule. In chapter 15 of book one, he adds a second kind of link. It has nothing to do with angles. It has to do with daylight.
Signs that behold each other: Ptolemy’s daylight rule
Think of the year as a wheel with the longest day at the top. In the north, the longest day comes when the Sun enters Cancer, in late June. Two signs that sit at the same distance from that point share the same length of day.
Taurus ends 30 degrees before Cancer begins. Leo starts 30 degrees after it. More exactly, Taurus runs from 30 to 60 degrees of the zodiac. Leo runs from 120 to 150 degrees. The start of Cancer, at 90 degrees, sits right in the middle.
So when the Sun is in Taurus in May, the days are as long as when the Sun is in Leo in August. Ptolemy wrote that such signs are “of equal power”. He added that they “behold” each other. The same rule links Gemini to Cancer, Aries to Virgo, and three pairs on the winter side.
That makes six beholding pairs out of 78. Here is the key point. Of those six, two are squares. Taurus and Leo is one of them, and Scorpio and Aquarius is the other. So the pair holds a clash angle and a bond of equal days at the same time. Few other Moon pairs carry such a mixed label.

Two readings of “beholding”, and what each one says here
Old authors used the rule in two ways. Ptolemy spoke of whole signs. For him, any Taurus Moon and any Leo Moon behold each other. There is nothing to check.
William Lilly, in Christian Astrology (1647), used the rule by degree. He called the mirror point an antiscion. The antiscion of a point is its reflection across the line of the longest and shortest days. For our pair, 5 degrees of Taurus mirrors 25 degrees of Leo. The two degrees always add up to 30. Lilly read a planet on the mirror point of another as a kind of hidden link, close to a trine or a sextile in effect.
How often does a Taurus Moon and Leo Moon couple hit that mirror point? We measured it. With a gap of 1 degree or less, it happens in 6.56 percent of couples. That is about 1 couple in 15. With a gap of 3 degrees, it rises to 19 percent, about 1 couple in 5.
So the two readings split the pair. Under Ptolemy, every couple has the bond. Under Lilly, only a few do, and they are the ones where the two Moons sit at mirror degrees.
Is the square itself real?
There is a second check that most guides skip. A square by sign is not always a square by degree. A Moon at 1 degree of Taurus and a Moon at 29 degrees of Leo are three signs apart. Yet the true gap between them is 118 degrees. That is closer to a trine than to a square.
Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle. They call that slack an orb. Here is how often the sign square is also a true square, for any pair of Moons three signs apart.

These values are the same for every Moon pair. The Moon spends about the same time in each degree, so the math is simple. But the result matters. With the usual 8 degree orb, fewer than half of Taurus Moon and Leo Moon couples have a real square. With the same orb, 7.11 percent have a trine or a sextile across the sign line instead.
A Taurus Moon: the exalted one
Tradition gives each planet signs where it works well and signs where it struggles. The Moon is at home in Cancer. It is exalted in Taurus. Exalted means honored, like a guest given the best seat. In plain words, the Taurus Moon wants calm that it can touch. It likes the same good meal twice. It trusts slow proof over big words. It shows love by staying, by feeding, by fixing the chair. When upset, it goes quiet and waits. It hates to be rushed out of a mood.
A Leo Moon: the one who wants a witness
Leo is ruled by the Sun. The Moon has no rank there. Astrologers call such a planet peregrine, which means a wanderer. It is not weak. It simply has no special help from the sign.

What the square and the bond look like at home
Both signs are fixed. Fixed signs hold a course. They do not shift ground in a fight, and they do not give up on a bond. That is the good news and the bad news of this pair.
The friction reads like this. The Taurus Moon shows care in quiet ways. The Leo Moon wants care that is visible and said out loud. One partner cooks the dinner. The other one wants to hear the words. Each can feel that the other misses the point.

How common is a Taurus Moon and Leo Moon couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in every sign. Over the eight centuries from 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. Taurus and Leo are no rarer than the rest.
So the odds for a random couple are simple. Two people with Moons in two given different signs make about 1 couple in 72. Two people with the same Moon sign make about 1 couple in 144. The tiny gaps between signs are smaller than the error of our method, so we do not rank the Moon pairs.
Why a birth date is not enough
The Moon moves fast. It stays in a sign for about 54.6 hours on average, from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. So on 43.92 percent of all days, the Moon changes sign at some hour. A person born on such a day has two possible Moon signs. Only the birth time can settle it.
Free tools fill the gap with a guess, and the usual guess is noon. For one person, a noon chart gives the wrong Moon sign 10.98 percent of the time. That is about one chart in nine. For a couple, the risk doubles. About 20.7 percent of couples get the wrong Moon pair from two noon charts. That is one couple in five.
Put the other way, only about 31 percent of couples have two Moons that are sure from dates alone. If you think you are a Taurus Moon and Leo Moon pair, check both birth times first.
New moon and full moon births in this pair

These shares are not flat. The Sun moves slower in the northern summer, so the Moon catches it more often in the summer signs. Among people with a Leo Moon, 8.43 percent also have the Sun in Leo. Among people with a Taurus Moon, 8.35 percent also have the Sun in Taurus.
So in 16.08 percent of Taurus Moon and Leo Moon couples, at least one partner is a new moon birth by sign. That ties with Gemini and Virgo for the top spot among the twelve square pairs. The full moon side is lower here, at 15.36 percent, since the matching Sun signs are Scorpio and Aquarius.
How we got these numbers
We used two separate routes. They share no code and no star tables.
Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. We found every time the Moon, the Sun and Venus changed sign from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. We then added up the time in each sign, interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the Moon’s sign every hour over the same eight centuries, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That is more than seven million points. Neither route used random draws.
The two routes agree within 0.04 points on every Moon figure on this page. All shares are for the tropical zodiac, as seen from Earth.
What the research says about sign matches
The best test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages”, came out in 2007. He tested Sun signs, not Moon signs. No study of the same size exists for Moon signs.
So a Taurus Moon and a Leo Moon are not doomed by the square. They are not blessed by the beholding bond either. The symbols give you words for two ways of needing care. What you do with those words is up to you.
