First, what a Moon sign is
Your Moon sign is the part of the sky the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as the private self. It is the part that reacts before you think. It shows what calms you, what upsets you, and how you care for the people close to you.
To compare two Moons, you count the signs between them. Virgo and Sagittarius sit three signs apart. That gap is a square. In Book 1 of the Tetrabiblos, the Greek astronomer Ptolemy sorts the angles into two groups. The trine and the sextile are harmonious. The square and the opposition are not. Two hosts, each exiled in the other’s sign
Each sign has a ruling planet in the old scheme. Think of it as the host of the house. When your Moon sits in a sign, it is a guest, and the host sets the tone.
Tradition gives each planet two homes, apart from the Sun and the Moon. Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo. Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces. The sign opposite a home is called the exile, or detriment. There, the planet works against the grain. So Mercury is in exile in Sagittarius and Pisces. Jupiter is in exile in Gemini and Virgo. William Lilly sets out this table in his Christian Astrology of 1647, and it follows Ptolemy’s scheme of houses.
Now put the two Moons side by side. The Virgo Moon’s host is Mercury. Mercury is at its worst in Sagittarius, the other partner’s Moon sign. The Sagittarius Moon’s host is Jupiter. Jupiter is at its worst in Virgo, the first partner’s Moon sign. Each Moon lives in the place its partner’s host finds hardest.
Read as a symbol, that is easy to picture. Mercury loves detail, lists and exact words. In Sagittarius, the big picture drowns the detail. Jupiter loves scope, faith and room. In Virgo, the detail crowds out the scope. Each partner’s comfort zone looks, to the other, like a room with the wrong furniture.

The Virgo Moon: the fixer

Where the square rubs
Earth and fire do not share a quality in the old scheme. Earth is cold and dry. Fire is hot and dry. They share dryness, which is why both like facts and plans, but they part on heat. Earth waits. Fire jumps.
Both signs are mutable. A mutable sign closes a season and adapts to change. Virgo ends the summer. Sagittarius ends the fall. So both partners bend. The trouble is that they bend in different ways. Virgo adapts by adjusting the detail. Sagittarius adapts by changing the whole plan.

Is the square exact?
A square by sign is not always a square by degree. Take a Moon at 1 degree of Virgo and a Moon at 29 degrees of Sagittarius. They are three signs apart. Yet the real gap is 118 degrees. That is almost a trine, the smoothest angle of all.
Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle, called an orb. Here is the share of couples whose two Moons form a true square.

These values hold for every Moon pair. The Moon spends close to the same time in each degree, so the math is plain. With an 8 degree orb, fewer than half of Virgo Moon and Sagittarius Moon couples have an exact square. In about 7.1 percent, the Moons form a trine or a sextile across the sign line instead. For those couples, the square exists by sign but not by degree. Only a birth time can tell you which group you are in.
What Ptolemy does not add
Ptolemy lists ties between signs that go beyond the aspects. Some signs “command and obey.” Others “behold” each other, which means they have days of the same length. Two ways of counting exist for both ties, one by whole sign and one by degree. Under both, Virgo and Sagittarius have no such tie. The only link Ptolemy gives this pair is the square.
They are not averse, either. Ptolemy calls signs one or five apart “disjunct,” or unlinked. Three signs apart is a real aspect. So the two Moons can see each other plainly. They just see each other at an angle.
A Virgo Moon leans new, a Sagittarius Moon leans full
Here is a small pattern that is real. A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. A person born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.
The Sun does not move at one speed. It is slowest in early July and fastest in early January. So the Moon meets it, or faces it, a little more in some signs than in others.

Read the table like this. Of all people with a Virgo Moon, 8.32 percent have the Sun in Virgo too. Of all people with a Sagittarius Moon, 8.44 percent have the Sun in Gemini. The Sun crosses Gemini in June, when it is slow. It crosses Sagittarius in December, when it is fast.
So the two partners lean in opposite ways. Virgo Moons lean toward new moon births. Sagittarius Moons lean toward full moon births. In a couple, the two leanings almost cancel out. In 15.62 percent of Virgo Moon and Sagittarius Moon couples, at least one partner is a new moon birth. In 15.82 percent, at least one is a full moon birth.
How common is this couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank the Moon pairs. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.
Check both Moons before you read on
The Moon moves fast. It stays in one sign for about 54.6 hours on average, and between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. So on 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour. A person born on such a day has two possible Moon signs.
Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. For a couple, the risk adds up. About 20.75 percent of couples get the wrong Moon pair from two noon charts, one couple in five. Only 31.45 percent have both Moons fixed by the date alone. A Virgo Moon born early in the day could be a Leo Moon. A Sagittarius Moon born late could be a Capricorn Moon.
How we measured
We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. It then summed the time interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
What the research says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.
So the square is not a warning, and the swap of hosts is not a curse. They are symbols. A Virgo Moon and a Sagittarius Moon both bend with change. The symbols point to where they bend in opposite ways, and to what each one can lend the other.
