Gemini Moon and Virgo Moon compatibility pairs two Moons that answer to the same planet. Mercury rules both signs. So when astrologers ask whose lead each Moon follows, both partners give the same answer. Yet the two signs stand at a square, the angle the old books call hard.
That mix is unusual. Of all 78 Moon pairs, this is the only square between an air sign and an earth sign where both signs are mutable, or changeable. This page sets out what the tradition says about that shape, with numbers we measured over eight centuries of real Moon positions.

Two Moons, one ruler

Both Moons think before they feel. That is the Mercury thread. The Gemini partner thinks out loud. The Virgo partner thinks with the hands.
Why Mercury matters here
Tradition gives each planet signs where it is strong or weak. These ranks are called dignities. The Moon rules Cancer. It is exalted, or honored, in Taurus. It is weak in Capricorn and in Scorpio. Neither Gemini nor Virgo is on that list. So in both charts the Moon is peregrine, a word that means foreign.
A foreign planet takes its cue from the lord of the sign it sits in. Astrologers call that lord the dispositor. For both of these Moons, the dispositor is Mercury. In a reading, that makes each partner’s Mercury the key to how their Moon is served. Where Mercury sits, and how it is placed, tells the story of each Moon.
Ptolemy explains why Mercury got these signs, in Tetrabiblos Book 1, chapter 17. He gave Cancer and Leo to the Moon and the Sun. He then gave the next sign on each side to Mercury, since Mercury never strays far from the Sun. So Gemini and Virgo sit on either side of the two lights, with Mercury as their shared lord.
Mercury is even stronger in Virgo than in Gemini. Ptolemy and William Lilly both place Mercury’s exaltation in Virgo, as well as its home. So the Virgo partner’s Moon answers to a lord at full strength in its own sign. The Gemini partner’s Moon answers to a lord at home, but not exalted. This rates the planets, not the people.
The Virgo Moon’s small seat at night
Lilly’s table of dignities has smaller ranks too. One of them is the triplicity. The zodiac splits into four groups of three signs, one for each element. Each group has lords who share its care.
Ptolemy gives the earth group, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, to Venus by day and the Moon by night. He sets this out in Book 1, chapter 18. So a Virgo Moon born at night, with the Sun below the horizon, holds a real seat in its sign. It is a minor rank, not a home. But it is more than a guest can claim.
The Gemini Moon has no such seat. The air group goes to Saturn and Mercury. Lilly gives the faces of Gemini, three slices of ten degrees, to Jupiter, Mars and the Sun. The Moon has no terms in any sign. So a Gemini Moon holds no rank of any size.
So the balance tips a little toward Virgo, and only for night births. That is the old view. It is a detail of the chart, not a ranking of the couple.
A square between two double signs
Signs three apart form a square, an angle of 90 degrees. In Book 1, chapter 13, Ptolemy calls the square out of harmony. His reason is simple. The two signs are of different kinds. Gemini is a masculine, daytime sign. Virgo is a feminine, night sign.
Yet the two signs share a mode. Both are mutable, the signs that close each season. Ptolemy calls them bicorporeal, or double-bodied, in chapter 11. So both partners sit at the turn from one season to the next.
The tradition reads that as a shared rhythm. Both Moons adapt. Both can drop a plan and pick up a new one. The square adds the friction of style. One adapts through talk. The other adapts through method.

How close are the Moons in real degrees?
A sign is 30 degrees wide, so a square by sign is not always 90 degrees by degree. Astrologers allow some leeway around an exact angle. They call it the orb. We asked what share of these couples have Moons within a given orb of 90 degrees.

These values hold for every pair of different Moon signs. The Moon crosses each sign at an even pace over a long span, so the answer is plain geometry. Our long count of real positions gave the same values.
The edges hold a surprise. A late Gemini Moon and an early Virgo Moon can sit close to 60 degrees apart. That is a sextile, a friendly angle. An early Gemini Moon and a late Virgo Moon can sit close to 120 degrees apart. That is a trine, the easiest angle of all.
Within 8 degrees, about 7.1 couples in 100 have one of those soft angles hidden under the square. That is twice the share for a sextile or a trine pair, since a square can slip either way. If your Moons sit near a border, read the degrees, not the sign names.
The new moon and full moon count
Some people are born with the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. That is a birth near the new moon. Others are born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun. That is a birth near the full moon. These shares differ by sign, and the gap is real.
The reason is the Sun’s speed. The Earth moves slowest around the Sun in early July. So the Sun lingers in the summer signs. The longer it stays in a sign, the more time the Moon has to pass through the same sign with it.

Put the two together. Some 16.07 in 100 of these couples include at least one partner born near a new moon. That ranks 11th of all 78 Moon pairs. Some 15.37 in 100 include a partner born near a full moon, which ranks 68th. The Gemini side drives most of the lean. Virgo, late in the summer, sits closer to the average. Can you trust your Moon pair?
The Moon spends about 54.6 hours in each sign on average, from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. It changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. On those days, a birth date alone gives two possible Moon signs.
Many free tools set the birth time to noon. From 1600 to 2400, that guess gives the wrong Moon sign 10.98 percent of the time. For a couple, both guesses must be right. So about one couple in five reads the wrong Moon pair from dates alone. For this pair, the figure is 20.8 in 100.
A wrong guess slides one sign. A Gemini Moon can turn out to be a Taurus or a Cancer Moon. A Virgo Moon can turn out to be a Leo or a Libra Moon. Either slip breaks the Mercury link. How we counted
Every figure here comes from one table of 78 Moon pairs, built for this site. It covers every moment from 1600 to 2400, in the tropical zodiac, as seen from the Earth. Two separate routes built it.
The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each Moon sign change to a tenth of a second and summed the exact time in each sign. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris, on an hourly grid set half an hour apart from the first. No random draws were used.
The two routes agree within 0.05 points on every figure. That check sets a limit. Each Moon sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of all time. The gap between signs is smaller than the gap between routes. So we do not rank Moon pairs by rarity. Any two different Moon signs meet in about 1 couple in 72.
What the evidence says about love signs
The best test of sign matching used the Sun, not the Moon. In 2007 the sociologist David Voas studied the 2001 census of England and Wales. He looked at about 10.3 million married couples. He found no link between Sun signs and who marries whom.
No census records birth times, so no one can run that test on Moons. Treat this pair as a lens for talk, not a verdict.
Living with a Gemini Moon and a Virgo Moon

Name the job before you start. The Virgo partner feels better with a clear task. The Gemini partner feels better with a clear topic. Agree on both.
