Pisces and Virgo sit face to face on the zodiac wheel. Each is the sign right across from the other. And two planets trade places between them. Mercury is honored in Virgo and brought low in Pisces. Venus is honored in Pisces and brought low in Virgo.
This guide reads the pair through that swap. We did not stop at the rule. We counted how many real charts carry it. We also counted US births to see how common a Pisces and Virgo couple is. The answer is about one couple in 70, and we show every step.
One thing first. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Sun signs predict how a couple will fare. What follows is a way to read two people, not a forecast of their fate.
Pisces and Virgo compatibility starts with a straight line
Picture the zodiac as a clock face with twelve signs on it. Virgo sits at one spot. Count six signs on, and you reach Pisces. That is half the circle, or 180 degrees. Astrologers call this angle an opposition.
An angle between two signs is called an aspect. The opposition is the widest one. It links two signs on one straight line through the center of the wheel. So the two signs share an axis, like the two ends of a see-saw.
The pair has more in common than a first look suggests. Both are mutable signs. Mutable means they sit at the end of a season and bend with change. Virgo closes the summer. Pisces closes the winter. Both are also feminine in the old scheme, the quiet, inward half of the signs.
What splits them is the element. Virgo is an earth sign. Earth stands for the body, for work and for what you can touch and count. Pisces is a water sign. Water stands for feeling, mood and what flows under words.
What Ptolemy said about this angle
The oldest full source is the Tetrabiblos. Ptolemy wrote it in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 13, he lists four aspects: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. He calls the square and the opposition disharmonious.
His reason is worth a close look. He says the opposition joins signs of opposite kinds, male and female. That does not fit this pair. In his own scheme, Virgo and Pisces are both feminine. In fact, any two opposite signs share the same kind. The old books are not always tidy, and it is fair to say so.
Ptolemy lists other ties too. Some pairs of signs rise in the same span of time. Others share the same length of day. We checked chapters 14 and 15. Virgo and Pisces fall in neither group. Their only direct tie in his system is the opposition itself.
There is one quiet link through the elements. In chapter 18, Ptolemy gives each group of three signs its rulers. The earth signs go to Venus by day and the Moon by night. The water signs go to Mars, with Venus by day and the Moon by night as partners. So Venus and the Moon have a voice in both signs. Keep Venus in mind. It comes back below.
Do the two Suns truly face each other?
A sign is 30 degrees wide. Every Pisces and Virgo couple is opposite by sign. But an exact opposition in degrees is a different thing. A Virgo born at the start of the sign and a Pisces born at the end sit 150 degrees apart, not 180.
Astrologers allow a margin of error, called an orb. Most use six to ten degrees for the Sun. So we asked a simple question. In a random US couple of a Virgo and a Pisces, what share have the two Suns within the orb?
We found the Sun’s place for every hour of every day from 2000 to 2014. We weighted each hour by the real number of US births that day. Then we paired every Virgo hour with every Pisces hour.
| Orb allowed | Share of Pisces and Virgo couples with a true opposition. |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees | About 19 percent of couples. |
| Within 6 degrees | About 36 percent of couples. |
| Within 8 degrees | About 46 percent of couples. |
| Within 10 degrees | About 56 percent of couples. |
So with a usual orb of eight degrees, fewer than half of these couples have Suns in a real opposition. The rest have the angle by sign only. Births are spread almost evenly inside each sign, so the result is nearly the same as a flat spread. A flat spread gives 36.0 percent at six degrees and 46.2 percent at eight.
In plain terms, the Suns face each other most closely when the two birthdays fall about six months apart. A Virgo born on September 5 and a Pisces born on March 5 are close to exact.
The swap: Mercury and Venus trade places
The old books rank each planet in each sign. These ranks are called dignities. A planet is at home in the sign it rules. It is a guest of honor in one sign, called its exaltation. The sign across from that seat of honor is its fall, a place of low standing.
Now look at this axis. Mercury is exalted in Virgo, so its fall is Pisces. Venus is exalted in Pisces, so its fall is Virgo. Each sign holds one planet high and the other one low. The two planets trade places across the line.
Ptolemy gives both rules in Book 1, chapter 19. His reason is about wet and dry. Venus is moist, he writes, so she grows strong in Pisces, where the moist spring begins. Mercury is drier, so he is exalted in Virgo, the sign of the dry autumn. William Lilly repeats the rule in Christian Astrology, printed in London in 1647. He pins the peaks to exact degrees: 15 Virgo for Mercury and 27 Pisces for Venus.
Is this the only axis with a swap?
No, and many pages get this wrong. We checked the full table in Ptolemy. Seven planets share out seven seats of honor. Those seats fall on four axes. Three of the four hold a swap just like this one.
| Axis | Exalted on one side | Exalted on the other side. |
|---|---|---|
| Aries and Libra | The Sun in Aries | Saturn in Libra. |
| Cancer and Capricorn | Jupiter in Cancer | Mars in Capricorn. |
| Virgo and Pisces | Mercury in Virgo | Venus in Pisces. |
| Taurus and Scorpio | The Moon in Taurus | No planet, so no swap. |
Ptolemy built the first three as matched pairs on purpose. Saturn takes Libra to be opposite the Sun. Mars takes Capricorn in contrast to Jupiter. Mercury takes Virgo in contrast to Venus.
So what does set Virgo and Pisces apart? Mercury is the only planet whose home and seat of honor are the same sign. It rules Virgo and is exalted there too. So Pisces, across the wheel, gets two weak grades for Mercury at once. It is the fall of Mercury, and it is also its detriment, the sign across from a planet’s home. Our page on Mercury in Pisces covers that double weak grade in detail.
One more feature is unique here. Mercury and Venus are the two planets that never stray far from the Sun. That changes everything for this pair, as the next section shows.
How many couples carry the swap in their charts?
The swap is a rule about signs. People are born with planets in real places. So we asked what share of Virgos have Mercury or Venus in Virgo. Then we asked the same for a Pisces.
Seen from Earth, Mercury never strays more than about 28 degrees from the Sun. Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees. So a Virgo has Mercury in Leo, Virgo or Libra, and Venus somewhere from Cancer to Scorpio. A Pisces has Mercury in Aquarius, Pisces or Aries, and Venus somewhere from Capricorn to Taurus.
Those lists never overlap. No Virgo can have Mercury or Venus in Pisces. No Pisces can have them in Virgo. So each partner can only carry the swap on their own side of the line.
| Placement | Its rank in the old books | Share of people with that Sun sign. |
|---|---|---|
| A Virgo with Mercury in Virgo | Home and exalted | 49.5 percent of Virgos. |
| A Virgo with Venus in Virgo | Fall | 23.5 percent of Virgos. |
| A Virgo with both in Virgo | One high, one low | 11.6 percent of Virgos. |
| A Pisces with Venus in Pisces | Exalted | 23.6 percent of Pisces. |
| A Pisces with Mercury in Pisces | Fall and detriment | 49.1 percent of Pisces. |
| A Pisces with both in Pisces | One high, one low | 11.6 percent of Pisces. |
The Virgo figure for Mercury matches our Virgo sign page, which gives 49.50 percent on the same window. Just under one Pisces in four has Venus in Pisces. Our page on Venus in Pisces covers that seat of honor.
Note the mirror in the table. Mercury sits in the Sun’s sign for about half of both groups. Venus sits there for close to a quarter of both. Mercury stays nearer the Sun, so it shares the Sun’s sign more.
What this means for a couple
A person’s Mercury and Venus do not depend on a partner’s chart. So we can multiply the shares to get the odds for a random Pisces and Virgo couple.
| What the couple carries | Share of Pisces and Virgo couples. |
|---|---|
| Each partner holds the planet honored in their own sign: Mercury in Virgo and Venus in Pisces | About 11.7 percent, or 1 couple in 9. |
| Each partner holds the planet in fall in their own sign: Venus in Virgo and Mercury in Pisces | About 11.5 percent, or 1 couple in 9. |
| Both partners hold both planets in their own sign, the full swap | About 1.35 percent, or 1 couple in 74. |
| Neither partner has Mercury or Venus in their own sign | About 15 percent, or 1 couple in 7. |
So the high side and the low side of the swap show up at almost the same rate. In about one couple in nine, the Virgo holds an honored Mercury and the Pisces holds an honored Venus. In just as many, it is the other way round.
The full swap is rare. Only about one of these couples in 74 has all four placements. In those charts, each partner holds one planet high and one low, in mirror image. That is the textbook picture of this pair, and it is the exception.
At the other end, about 85 percent of couples have at least one of these four placements. So the swap is not just a rule in a book. Most Pisces and Virgo couples carry some part of it.
How we measured it
We used two separate routes over the years 1600 to 2400. A long window matters, because Venus repeats its path every eight years and a short span tilts the count.
Route one used the Astronomy Engine code. We placed the Sun, Mercury and Venus every two hours for 800 years. We kept only the hours with the Sun in Virgo or in Pisces, and counted the signs of the other two. Route two used a second code base, PyEphem, with a step of five hours.
The two routes agree to within 0.02 percent on every line. Route one gives 49.50 percent for Mercury in Virgo among Virgos. Route two gives 49.49 percent. For Venus in Pisces among Pisces, they give 23.60 and 23.62 percent. The widest gaps we found were 27.8 degrees for Mercury and 46.8 degrees for Venus.
How common is a Pisces and Virgo couple?
Here is the question no match chart answers. Say you pick two Americans at random. How likely is it that one is a Pisces and the other a Virgo?
If births were spread evenly, each sign would hold one twelfth of people. The odds of this pair would be two in 144, or one in 72. The two is there because either partner can be the Pisces.
But births are not spread evenly. Our reference is the daily count of US births from 2000 to 2014, released by the Social Security Administration. It covers 62.2 million births. We found the Sun’s sign for each part of each day, with the real dates the Sun enters each sign.
| Sign | Share of US births, 2000 to 2014. |
|---|---|
| Virgo | 8.94 percent of births. |
| Pisces | 8.04 percent of births. |
| Even spread, as a baseline | 8.33 percent for each sign. |
Two times 8.94 percent times 8.04 percent gives 1.44 percent. That is about one random couple in 70. So a Pisces and Virgo pair is a little more common than chance alone would give.
The cause is the US birth calendar. More babies arrive in late summer and early fall. Virgo season sits right in that peak, and Virgo is the second most common sign after Leo. Pisces season falls in the quiet stretch of late winter. Pisces is the fourth least common sign. The Virgo gain outweighs the Pisces loss.
One practical note. If you were born on August 22 or 23, September 22 or 23, February 18 or 19, or March 20 or 21, your sign depends on the year and the hour. Check it with our guide to the zodiac signs before you read on.
What ten million marriages showed
Do signs shape who marries whom? One sociologist tested it on a large scale. David Voas used the 2001 census of England and Wales. It held the birth dates of about 10.3 million married couples.
At first, same-sign couples looked a little too common. Voas traced the excess to errors in the forms. Some people wrote the same birthday for both spouses. Once he set that aside, he found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. His paper came out in 2007. The magazine Skeptical Inquirer ran a summary in March 2008.
Our US count points the same way. Pisces and Virgo pair up at about the rate that birth dates alone predict. So read this pairing as a lens on two styles. It is not a score, and it is not a verdict on your couple.
Reading the pair as a lens, not a verdict
With the facts in place, here is how astrologers read the dynamic. These are pictures from the tradition, not rules for your life.
Two ways to care
The swap gives the plot. Mercury is the planet of names, lists and skill. Venus is the planet of love, beauty and what we hold dear. Virgo puts Mercury first. Pisces puts Venus first.
So a Virgo shows care by fixing, sorting and helping. A Pisces shows care by feeling with you and letting go of the score. Both are real love. They just speak through a different planet. A Virgo can read the Pisces way as vague. A Pisces can read the Virgo way as a list of notes.
The see-saw
Modern astrologers such as Robert Hand read an opposition as a mirror. Each side sees in the other the half it has left out. Virgo draws lines. Pisces blurs them. When the pair works, in the tradition’s reading, each borrows a little of the other’s gift. When it jars, each pushes harder on its own end of the see-saw.
Daily life
Both signs are mutable, so both bend. That helps with plans and change. It can also leave no one to set a firm course. Astrologers read this pair as more prone to drift than to open war.
Shared ground
Both signs like to serve. Virgo is the sign of useful work. Pisces is the sign of mercy. Help given to others, a craft, a garden, a cause: these are common ground. The swap, read this way, is less a clash than a trade of gifts.

What the full chart changes
A Sun sign is one planet out of ten. Two charts can share Sun signs and look nothing alike.
The rising sign shows first impressions and daily style. It changes about every two hours, so it needs a birth time. The Moon shows emotional needs. Mars shows drive and desire. And as we saw, Mercury has three possible signs and Venus five for each partner.
Take a Virgo with Venus in Libra and a Pisces with Venus in Aquarius. Their two Venus signs form an easy air trine. That couple can feel nothing like the textbook picture. Astrologers compare full charts to see this. The method is called synastry, which means setting two charts side by side.
Astrologers check Venus before pronouncing on romance, and Virgo and Pisces Venus placements does that for this combination.
Frequently asked questions
Are Pisces and Virgo compatible?
Astrology gives no yes or no. The signs sit 180 degrees apart, in opposition. Mercury is honored in Virgo and low in Pisces, and Venus is the reverse. Read the pair as a lens on two ways to care, not a forecast.
What aspect do Pisces and Virgo make?
They form an opposition: six signs, or 180 degrees, apart. Both are mutable and both are feminine in Ptolemy’s scheme. With an orb of eight degrees, about 46 percent of these couples have Suns in a true opposition.
Is Virgo and Pisces the only axis where two planets swap exaltation and fall?
No. Ptolemy builds three such swaps. The Sun and Saturn trade on Aries and Libra. Jupiter and Mars trade on Cancer and Capricorn. Mercury and Venus trade on Virgo and Pisces. What is unique here is that Mercury also rules Virgo.
How common is a Pisces and Virgo couple?
From US birth data for 2000 to 2014, 8.94 percent of people are Virgo and 8.04 percent are Pisces. Two people picked at random form this pair about once in 70 tries, a little more than the one in 72 of an even spread.
Can a Virgo have Venus in Pisces?
No. Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun. A Virgo has Venus somewhere from Cancer to Scorpio. A Pisces has Venus somewhere from Capricorn to Taurus.
Does it matter who is the man and who is the woman?
Not in the chart. A Pisces man with a Virgo woman and a Virgo man with a Pisces woman have the same angle and the same swap. What changes the reading is the rest of each chart.
