Virgo Venus and Pisces Venus compatibility sits on a line that runs straight through the rules of the old books. Pisces is where Venus is exalted, her place of highest honor. Virgo, right across the wheel, is where she falls, her place of least ease. No other pair of Venus signs puts the high point and the low point face to face.
This page adds what the sky shows. We ran Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400. The pair is the most common of the six Venus oppositions. And the two partners can never share a Sun sign. We show the numbers, what Ptolemy says about the axis, and how the opposition looks in real degrees.
One point first. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do. Read this as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast.
The high point and the low point
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. The tradition also ranks each sign for each planet. For Venus, the list is short.
| Rank | Signs for Venus | Meaning. |
|---|---|---|
| Home, or domicile | Taurus and Libra | Venus rules the sign and acts in her own style. |
| Exaltation | Pisces | Venus is an honored guest. |
| Detriment, or exile | Aries and Scorpio | The signs across from her homes. |
| Fall | Virgo | The sign across from her exaltation. |
Exaltation and fall come as a pair. The fall is always the sign opposite the exaltation. So Pisces and Virgo are bound together by the rule itself. Detriment works the same way for the homes: Aries faces Libra, and Scorpio faces Taurus.
Ptolemy gives a reason in Book I of the Tetrabiblos. Venus is moist by nature, he says. So she grows strong in Pisces, where the moist spring begins. Virgo sits at the other end of the line. Ptolemy links it with the dry autumn. William Lilly, in Christian Astrology in 1647, pins her peak at 27 degrees Pisces. Our page on Venus in Pisces covers that seat of honor.
Fall is not the same as detriment. In detriment, Venus sits across from one of her own homes. In fall, she is a guest in a house where another planet is strong. In Virgo, that planet is Mercury, the planet of words and detail. Ptolemy gives Mercury both its home and its exaltation in Virgo. So Venus there loves through care, repair and small useful acts. Our page on Venus in Virgo explains the difference.
Neither rank is a verdict on a person. The old books say how easily Venus shows her nature in a sign. They do not say who can love well. A Venus in fall can still love deeply. It just does so in the accent of its host.
A swap across the line
The axis holds a second planet too. Mercury is exalted in Virgo, so its fall is in Pisces. Venus is exalted in Pisces, so its fall is in Virgo. Each sign holds one planet high and the other low. The two planets trade places across the line.
The rulers of the signs trade too. Mercury rules Virgo and is in detriment in Pisces. Jupiter rules Pisces in the old scheme and is in detriment in Virgo. So each partner’s sign is a hard place for the other sign’s ruler.
Read as symbols, this gives the pair its theme. The Pisces Venus loves with feeling first and detail second. The Virgo Venus loves with detail first and feeling second. Each holds high what the other holds low. Our page on Pisces and Virgo compatibility by Sun sign follows the same swap for Mercury.
How common the pair is
Venus does not spend the same time in each sign. Over 800 years, the shares settle close to one in twelve.
| Venus sign | Share of time, 1600 to 2400 | Rank among twelve. |
|---|---|---|
| Venus in Virgo | 8.41 percent | Fifth of twelve. |
| Venus in Pisces | 8.32 percent | Seventh of twelve. |
| Even split | 8.33 percent | One sign in twelve. |
Pick two people at random. The chance that one has Venus in Virgo and the other has Venus in Pisces is 1.40 percent. That is about one couple in 72. It ranks 29th of the 78 Venus pairs.
Among the six pairs of opposite Venus signs, it is the most common. The margin is thin, though. Taurus with Scorpio comes to 1.39 percent. The rarest oppositions, Aries with Libra and Leo with Aquarius, come to 1.38 percent. So the rank is a detail, not a verdict.
Two lists of Suns that never meet
Seen from Earth, Venus never strays far from the Sun. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees. So each Venus sign can only sit with five Sun signs. Here they are for this pair, as a share of all people with that Venus.
| Sun sign | Share of Virgo Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Cancer | 8.65 percent | Venus far ahead of the Sun. |
| Leo | 29.85 percent | The largest group. |
| Virgo | 23.66 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Libra | 28.93 percent | A close second. |
| Scorpio | 8.91 percent | Venus far behind the Sun. |
| Sun sign | Share of Pisces Venus people | Note. |
|---|---|---|
| Capricorn | 9.42 percent | Venus far ahead of the Sun. |
| Aquarius | 28.57 percent | A close second. |
| Pisces | 23.28 percent | Sun and Venus in one sign. |
| Aries | 29.56 percent | The largest group. |
| Taurus | 9.18 percent | Venus far behind the Sun. |
The Virgo Venus list runs from Cancer to Scorpio. The Pisces Venus list runs from Capricorn to Taurus. No sign sits on both. So in every couple with this Venus pair, the two partners have different Sun signs.
The calendar shows it plainly. With the usual Sun sign dates, the Virgo Venus crowd is born from late June to late November. The Pisces Venus crowd is born from late December to late May. Two gaps sit between them. From late November to late December, with the Sun in Sagittarius, nobody is born with either Venus. The same is true from late May to late June, with the Sun in Gemini.
Which Sun pairs are most likely? Four combinations sit almost level.
| Sun pair | Share of these couples | Reading. |
|---|---|---|
| Leo Sun and Aries Sun | 8.82 percent | The top pair, by a hair. |
| Libra Sun and Aries Sun | 8.55 percent | Close behind. |
| Leo Sun and Aquarius Sun | 8.53 percent | Close behind. |
| Libra Sun and Aquarius Sun | 8.27 percent | Close behind. |
In each case, the Virgo Venus partner has the first Sun and the Pisces Venus partner has the second. No single Sun pair covers even one couple in eleven. So the typical couple is a lean, not a rule. A Virgo Sun with a Pisces Sun, the pair that matches the Venus signs, comes to only 5.51 percent.
That last figure is the share of couples where both partners have Venus in their own Sun sign. In 41.43 percent, at least one does. So for most couples with this Venus pair, the Sun signs and the Venus signs tell two separate stories.
What Ptolemy says about the opposition
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book I, chapter 13, he names four aspects: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. The opposition comes first. It joins two signs on one straight line across the circle. Later tradition reads it as a pull between two ends that need each other.
In the next chapters, he adds two more ties. Signs that command and obey sit the same distance from an equinox. Signs that behold each other sit the same distance from a solstice, so their days last the same length. Scholars read these rules in two ways, sign by sign or degree by degree. For many pairs, the two readings disagree. Here they agree.
| Tie | Sign by sign | Degree by degree. |
|---|---|---|
| Command and obey | Virgo pairs with Scorpio, Pisces with Taurus | Virgo pairs with Libra, Pisces with Aries. |
| Behold | Virgo pairs with Taurus, Pisces with Scorpio | Virgo pairs with Aries, Pisces with Libra. |
So Virgo and Pisces share no tie beyond the opposition, in either reading. The sign-by-sign lists come from the notes of Frank Robbins, who made the standard English version. The degree rule is the one Lilly used for his mirror points.
Those mirror points almost never apply here. Lilly read a planet on another’s mirror degree as a hidden link. For this pair, it can only happen at the very edge of both signs, near the end of Virgo and the end of Pisces. At a 3 degree gap, 0.51 percent of couples have one. At a 1 degree gap, 0.06 percent do.
The opposition in real degrees
A sign is 30 degrees wide. So two Venuses in opposite signs can sit anywhere from 150 to 210 degrees apart. How close are they to a true 180?
An orb is the slack an astrologer allows around an exact angle. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree.
| Orb | Couples near 180 degrees | Reading. |
|---|---|---|
| 3 degrees | 18.98 percent | A tight opposition. |
| 6 degrees | 35.95 percent | About one in three. |
| 8 degrees | 46.15 percent | A common working orb. |
| 10 degrees | 55.47 percent | A wide orb. |
So at a common 8 degree orb, fewer than half of these couples have a true opposition by degree. The rest have an opposition by sign only.
Unlike many pairs, this one has no twist at the edges. When the gap drifts away from 180, it moves toward 150 or 210 degrees. Those are quincunxes, which are not among the major aspects. So no couple with this Venus pair gets a trine or a square across the sign line. The opposition by sign is the only major link in play.
How the pair plays out
Both signs are mutable, which means each closes a season and adjusts. Virgo is earth, and Pisces is water. Earth gives water a shape. Water keeps earth from going dry. Of the six Venus oppositions, this is the only one between earth and water in mutable signs.
The Virgo Venus shows love through help. It spots what needs doing and does it without fuss. It likes love to be useful and clear. The Pisces Venus shows love through feeling. It picks up moods before they are spoken. It forgives fast and gives without keeping score.
- The Virgo Venus can feel lost when care stays vague and unspoken.
- The Pisces Venus can feel judged when care turns into a list of fixes.
- Both like to serve the person they love.
- Both adjust easily, so both can give in too much.
A useful habit is to say what each act means. The Virgo partner can say, “I did this because I care.” The Pisces partner can say, “I let that go because I love you.” Each hears the other’s accent a little better.
The opposition also works like a mirror. Each partner sees in the other the trait they hold least. The Virgo Venus meets a partner who loves without a plan. The Pisces Venus meets a partner who loves with one. Neither is the better way.
Other layers and other pairs
Venus is one layer of a chart. The Moon shows emotional needs, and Virgo Moon and Pisces Moon compatibility reads the same two signs through that layer.
Another Venus opposition sets a home against an exile in Venus in Aries and Venus in Libra compatibility. Virgo Venus meets another weak Venus in Venus in Aries and Venus in Virgo compatibility. For all twelve signs at once, see our Venus sign compatibility guide.
What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So a Venus in fall facing a Venus exalted is not a forecast for a couple. This page gives the sky behind the label, and the old rules in their own words.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That is more than seven million points. Neither drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, they agree within 0.01 points.
A long window matters. Venus repeats its path about every eight years, and a short span tilts the count. The couple figures assume two people born at unrelated moments. The degree shares use the real spread of Venus inside each sign. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. The Ptolemy readings follow the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 19.
Frequently asked questions
Are Virgo Venus and Pisces Venus compatible?
The two signs form an opposition, one of Ptolemy’s four aspects. One Venus is in fall and the other is exalted, so the pair sits on a line of contrast. No study shows that Venus signs predict how a couple does.
How common is a Virgo Venus and Pisces Venus couple?
About one couple in 72, or 1.40 percent, over 1600 to 2400. It ranks 29th of the 78 Venus pairs and first of the six oppositions.
Can a Virgo Venus and a Pisces Venus share a Sun sign?
No. A Virgo Venus goes with Suns from Cancer to Scorpio. A Pisces Venus goes with Suns from Capricorn to Taurus. The two lists never meet.
Why is Venus exalted in Pisces and in fall in Virgo?
Ptolemy says Venus is moist, so she is strong in Pisces, where the moist spring begins. The fall is always the sign opposite the exaltation, which is Virgo.
Is Venus in fall a bad sign for love?
No. Fall means Venus acts in a borrowed style, here the careful style of Mercury. It says nothing about how well a person can love.
