Detriment is not a verdict on a person. It says Venus is speaking in the accent of Mars. As a symbol, this couple holds both halves of an old pair. Mars rules Aries and Venus rules Libra. So the axis between the two Venuses is also the axis between Mars and Venus, the classic figures of desire and charm.

Pick two people at random. The chance that one has Venus in Aries and the other has Venus in Libra is 1.38 percent. That is about one couple in 72 or 73. It ranks 39th of the 78 Venus pairs, right in the middle. Both signs sit just under the even share.
Opposite Venuses, separate Suns
Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees. So each Venus sign can only sit with five Sun signs. The tables show who holds each Venus, as a share of all people with that Venus.

The Aries Venus list runs from Aquarius to Gemini. The Libra Venus list runs from Leo to Sagittarius. No sign sits in both. So the two partners never share a Sun sign. In dates, the Aries Venus crowd is born from late January to late June. The Libra Venus crowd is born from late July to late December. Nobody in this pair is born in the month after the June solstice or the month after the December one.
The most likely Suns form a trine
Which Sun pair turns up most here? It is a Taurus Sun with the Aries Venus and a Virgo Sun with the Libra Venus. That covers 8.99 percent of these couples. No other Venus pair has this exact top Sun pair.
Here is the twist. The Venuses are opposite, 180 degrees apart by sign. The top Suns are Taurus and Virgo, which are four signs apart. That is a trine, and both are earth. So the most common version of this couple has a tense angle in the Venus layer and an easy one in the Sun layer. Still, less than one couple in eleven fits it, so treat it as a lean.
Can the Suns be opposite too? Yes. An Aries Sun with an Aries Venus and a Libra Sun with a Libra Venus make 5.55 percent of these couples. That is the group where both partners have Venus in their own Sun sign. In 41.56 percent, at least one partner does. Only the small group will find its Venus pair mirrored in a Sun sign column.
The opposition in real degrees
By sign, Aries and Libra are always opposite. By degree, the gap between two Venuses can run from 150 to 210. The true opposition is 180. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign to see how many couples come close.

An orb is the slack an astrologer allows around an exact angle. At a common orb of 8 degrees, fewer than half of these couples have a true opposition. But this pair has one clean feature. No couple forms a different major aspect across the sign line. The nearest angles on either side are quincunxes, which Ptolemy did not count. So when the opposition is loose, nothing else takes its place.
What Ptolemy says about Aries and Libra
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book I he names four aspects: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. He calls the trine and sextile harmonious. He calls the square and the opposition disharmonious. So by the oldest rule, this is an angle of tension.
He gives Aries and Libra a special place. The equinox circle runs through both, and on those days the day and night are equal. He calls both signs male and linked to the day. Aries is fire and Libra is air, and both are cardinal, which means each one opens a season. Of all 78 Venus pairs, this is the only fire and air opposition between two cardinal signs.
Ptolemy also sorts some pairs of signs as ones that command and obey, and others that behold each other. Frank Robbins, who made the standard English version, notes that Aries and Libra sit outside both groups. They are the line those groups are built around. They are not averse either, a term for signs that cannot see each other. They see each other fully, face to face.
How the pair plays out
Read as symbols, both Venuses share a trait. Fire and air are both active, and both signs start seasons. So both partners like to begin things together: the plan, the date, the talk. Neither enjoys a stale routine.
The tension is in style. The Aries Venus says what it wants now. The Libra Venus weighs what is fair for both. One can feel the other is too blunt. The other can feel the first is too slow to choose.

What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So an opposition is not a warning, and a home rank is not a promise. This page gives the sky behind the label.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That is more than seven million points. Neither drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, they agree within 0.01 points.
The degree shares use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. They assume two people born at unrelated moments. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. The Ptolemy readings follow the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I.
