Venus in Aries and Venus in Leo compatibility starts with an easy fact. Both signs are fire. They sit four signs apart, in a trine, the angle the old books call the smoothest of all. Most guides stop there. But Venus never strays far from the Sun, and that changes who these two people are likely to be.
We ran the sky from 1600 to 2400 to find out. The result is the thesis of this page. An Aries Venus and a Leo Venus can share only one Sun sign, and it is Gemini. For every other couple, the two partners were born under different Suns. Below you will find how common this pair is, which Suns go with it, and how the trine looks in real degrees.
One point first. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do. Read what follows as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast.
What a Venus sign is
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. Your Sun sign is a different thing. It is the sign the Sun was in, the one most people know. Search engines also see this pair written as Aries Venus and Leo Venus. It is the same question.
Venus is never more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, as seen from Earth. Astrologers call that gap the elongation. We measured the widest one at 47.28 degrees over our 800 years. So a Venus sign can only sit with five Sun signs: its own, and two on each side. That rule is the key to this page.
How common this pair is
Venus does not spend the same time in each sign. It speeds up, slows down and sometimes runs backward, which astrologers call retrograde. Over a long window the shares settle close to one in twelve. Here are the two signs in this pair.

Pick two people at random. The chance that one has Venus in Aries and the other has Venus in Leo is 1.40 percent. That is about one couple in 71. It ranks 25th of the 78 possible Venus pairs, near the middle. So this is neither a rare pair nor a common one. It is an ordinary pair with an unusual Sun pattern.

Now look for a sign that sits in both lists. There is just one: Gemini. It is the last sign an Aries Venus can reach, and the first one a Leo Venus can reach. Both edges are thin. Fewer than one in ten people on each side has a Gemini Sun.
So how many of these couples share a Sun sign? Multiply the two Gemini shares. You get 0.75 percent. That is about one Aries Venus and Leo Venus couple in 134. In all the others, the two Suns differ.
The couple you are most likely to meet
Which Sun pair turns up most in this Venus pair? It is a Taurus Sun with the Aries Venus and a Cancer Sun with the Leo Venus. That combination covers 8.92 percent of these couples. It is the top line, but it is still less than one couple in eleven. Treat it as a lean, not a rule.
Look at what that top couple means. A Taurus Sun born with Venus in Aries has Venus one sign behind the Sun. That Venus rises before the Sun, so it is a morning star. A Cancer Sun born with Venus in Leo has Venus one sign ahead. That Venus sets after the Sun, so it is an evening star. The most common version of this couple is one morning Venus and one evening Venus, born in spring and in early summer.
Another number helps. In 41.84 percent of these couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign. That means an Aries Sun with an Aries Venus, or a Leo Sun with a Leo Venus. In 5.63 percent, both do. Those are the couples a Sun sign column describes well. For the rest, the Venus layer tells a different story from the Sun.
The trine in real degrees
By sign, Aries and Leo are always in trine. By degree, the gap between two Venuses can run from 90 degrees to 150. The true trine is 120. So we asked how many couples come close to it. The table uses the real spread of Venus inside each sign, not a guess.

An orb is the slack an astrologer allows around an exact angle. At a common orb of 8 degrees, fewer than half of these couples have a true trine. In 3.64 percent, the two Venuses form a different major angle across the sign line instead. Late Aries with early Leo can make a square. Early Aries with late Leo can make a wide quincunx, which is not a major angle. So check the degrees before you call this trine easy.

What the old books say about Aries and Leo
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book I he names the aspects, the angles that link two signs. The trine joins signs four apart. He calls it one of the two harmonious angles, with the sextile. The square and the opposition he calls disharmonious.
He also sorts the signs into four sets of three, one per element. The fire set is Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. He gives this set to the Sun by day and to Jupiter by night. Venus has no part in running it. So both Venuses in this pair are guests in a fire house.
Ptolemy adds two more links between signs. Some pairs command and obey. Others behold each other, because the days are the same length when the Sun is in either one. Aries and Leo fall into neither group. The trine is their only bond, and it is enough.

Each planet has signs where the tradition says it works well or badly. Venus rules Taurus and Libra. She is exalted in Pisces. She is in detriment, also called exile, in Aries and Scorpio. She is in fall in Virgo.

In Leo, Venus holds no major rank. The old writer William Lilly called such a planet peregrine, which means a guest. Her host is the Sun, and the Sun is never far. Here is a small twist. The Sun is exalted in Aries, says Ptolemy. The Sun also rules Leo. So the Sun is honored in both signs of this pair, while Venus is honored in neither. As a symbol, both partners love in a solar way: bright, open and a little proud.
How the pair plays out
Read as symbols, the two Venuses share a pace. Both like love to be clear and warm. Neither enjoys long silences or hints. Both show care through action more than words.
The difference is in the mode. Aries is cardinal, which means it opens a season. Leo is fixed, which means it holds the middle of one. What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So this page does not claim that a Venus trine makes a good match. It gives you the real sky behind the label. It tells you which Suns go with each Venus, how many couples have a close trine, and what the old books meant by it.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second. It then added up the time, interval by interval. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour on a grid set half an hour off the first one. That is more than seven million points.
Neither method drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, the two agree within 0.01 points. The trine shares come from the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. The couple figures assume two people born at unrelated moments. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
