Aries Moon and Leo Moon compatibility is the classic fire match. Both signs are fire, and they sit four signs apart, which makes a trine. Most guides stop there and call it easy.
The old texts add a detail that most guides skip. Both signs belong to the Sun. The Sun rules Leo. The Sun is also exalted in Aries, which means it is an honored guest there. And by day, the Sun runs the whole fire group. So the two Moons in this pair live in two houses held by one planet.
This page sets out that link, how many couples have an exact trine, and why the Moon itself holds no rank in either sign. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a Moon sign predicts how a couple will do.

Two signs that answer to the Sun
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. Book I sets out the ranks a planet can hold in a sign. Three of them tie the Sun to this pair.
First, the house. In chapter 17, the Sun takes Leo as its one home. Leo is a northern sign, close to the top of the summer sky, so Ptolemy gave it to the greatest light.
Second, the exaltation. In chapter 19, the Sun is exalted in Aries. Ptolemy gives the reason. In Aries the Sun crosses into the northern half of the sky, and the days start to grow longer than the nights.
Third, the triangle. In chapter 18, Ptolemy groups the signs in four sets of three, one per element. The fire set is Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. He gives it to the Sun by day and to Jupiter by night. Mars rules Aries, yet he leaves Mars out, since Mars is not of the Sun’s party.

Frank Robbins, who made the standard English version, adds a note that fits this pair. Aries is square to Cancer, the Moon’s home. It is also in trine to Leo, the Sun’s home. So Aries faces the Moon with friction and the Sun with ease.
For a couple, the reading is simple. Both partners feel through a sign that the Sun favors. The Leo Moon lives in the Sun’s own house. The Aries Moon lives where the Sun is honored.
A Moon with no rank in fire
Now the other side. The Moon holds no rank in Aries or in Leo. It rules Cancer and is exalted in Taurus. It has no share in the fire set, which belongs to the Sun and Jupiter.
William Lilly, in Christian Astrology in 1647, calls a planet with no rank peregrine. The word means a wanderer or a guest. So both Moons in this pair are guests. The host of the Aries Moon is Mars. The host of the Leo Moon is the Sun.

A starter and a keeper
The two signs share an element but not a mode. A mode is the part of a season a sign covers. Aries is cardinal, which means it opens a season. Leo is fixed, which means it holds the middle of one.
Out of 78 possible Moon pairs, this is the only fire trine that joins a cardinal sign and a fixed sign. The other two fire trines each include Sagittarius, a mutable sign, which means a sign that closes a season.
In the old reading, that gives each partner a job. The Aries Moon lights the fire. The Leo Moon keeps it burning. One wants to begin, and the other wants to stay.
Is the trine exact in degrees?
A sign match is not a degree match. Each sign spans 30 degrees, and each Moon can sit anywhere inside its sign.
Astrologers call the allowed gap an orb. A trine is exact at 120 degrees apart. With an orb of 8 degrees, anything from 112 to 128 degrees still counts. We measured how many Aries and Leo couples fall inside each orb.

These shares hold for every Moon pair, since the Moon spreads evenly across each sign. So a fire trine by sign is a real trine in the sky for fewer than half of these couples.
A few couples even form a square in degrees. Say the Aries Moon sits at 28 degrees and the Leo Moon at 2 degrees. The gap is 94 degrees, which is a square. At an 8 degree orb, 3.6 percent of Aries and Leo couples land in that spot. For them the easy match by sign is a hard link in the sky.
Born near a new Moon or a full Moon
The Moon’s sign also hints at its phase. A phase is the Moon’s angle to the Sun. If the Moon is in the same sign as the Sun, the birth came near a new Moon. If it is in the opposite sign, the birth came near a full Moon.
Leo leans toward the new Moon, and the lean is real. Of all people with a Leo Moon, 8.43 percent also have the Sun in Leo. Only 7.96 percent have the Sun in Aquarius, across the wheel. The cause is the Sun’s speed. Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July, so the Sun moves slowly through the summer signs. The Moon has more time to catch it there.
For an Aries Moon, the two shares sit near the middle, at 8.21 and 8.18 percent. Aries lies at the spring point, where the Sun’s speed is close to average.

The birth-time trap
The Moon moves fast. It stays in a sign for 54.6 hours on average, and each stay runs from about 47 to 61 hours. So it changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days.
Most free tools ask only for a date and place the birth at noon. On a day when the Moon changes sign, noon can give the wrong one. Across all birth moments, a noon chart names the wrong Moon sign 10.98 percent of the time.
A couple has two charts, so the risk adds up. With noon charts for both, 20.75 percent of couples get the wrong Moon pair. That is about 1 couple in 5. Only 31.45 percent of couples can skip the clock, because both were born on a day with no Moon change.

Reading the pair the traditional way
In a chart, the Moon stands for the private self. It is the part that reacts before it thinks. Stephen Arroyo reads a lot of fire as a need for freedom and action. Liz Greene treats the Moon as an old emotional pattern, one you did not choose. Here is how the old grid reads this pair. None of it has been tested.
Where the two Moons meet
- Warmth. Both Moons show what they feel. There is little to decode.
- Play. Fire likes games, trips and bold plans. Shared fun feeds the bond.
- Courage. Both back each other in public. Neither hides a partner’s win.
- Quick repair. Anger in fire burns hot and short. A clash rarely turns into a cold war.
Where they rub
- Pace. The Aries Moon moves on fast. The Leo Moon holds a hurt longer, as fixed signs do.
- Pride. Leo needs to be seen, and Aries needs to win. Both can wait for the other to give way first.
- Attention. Two fire Moons can both want the stage at once.
- Quiet care. Neither Moon reaches first for soft, slow comfort. Both can forget to offer it.
The degree gap from above matters here too. A tight trine is read as two people who react in tune. A wide one shares the style but not the timing.
What the evidence says
No study has tested Moon signs in couples at scale. The data does not exist. A census gives dates, not birth times, and a Moon sign needs the clock on more than 4 days in 10.
The best test of love signs used the Sun. In 2007 the sociologist David Voas looked at the 2001 census of England and Wales. He studied 10.3 million married couples. He found no link between Sun signs and who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from form errors, not from the stars.
So treat the Aries and Leo reading as a prompt for a talk about pace and pride. It is not a verdict on the couple.
How we measured it
We used two separate routes over the years 1600 to 2400. Every moment counts the same.
Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each Moon sign change to within a tenth of a second, 128,335 of them. It then summed the time in each sign, with no random draws.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It placed the Moon once an hour, on a grid shifted by 30 minutes from the first. That gave 7,012,656 moments. The two routes agree to within 0.04 points on every Moon figure on this page.
The degree shares assume two people born at unrelated moments. Days and noon charts use Greenwich time. The Ptolemy quotes come from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 17 to 19.
