Aries Moon and Cancer Moon compatibility starts with an odd fact from the second century. When Ptolemy handed out the signs to the planets, he gave Aries to Mars for one stated reason. Aries sits at a square to Cancer, the Moon’s own home.
So this pair is not a square by chance. In the old scheme, the square is the reason Mars owns Aries at all. One partner carries a Moon in the sign built to clash with the Moon. The other carries a Moon at home.
This page sets out that link, how many couples have an exact square, and why a birth time matters. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a Moon sign predicts how a couple will do.

The square Ptolemy built into Mars
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book I, chapter 17, he explains why each planet owns its signs. The Sun took Leo and the Moon took Cancer, the two signs nearest the top of the sky in summer. The other planets were then placed by their aspect to those two homes.
Jupiter got the signs that make a trine to the Sun and Moon, the kind link. Venus got the signs that make a sextile, the friendly one. Mars got Aries and Scorpio. Ptolemy says why in plain terms. Mars is harsh by nature, so it took signs in quartile, his word for a square, to the two lights.
Frank Robbins, who made the standard English version, spells it out in his note. Aries is quartile to the Moon’s house, Cancer. So when an Aries Moon meets a Cancer Moon, the old texts see the clash that gave Mars its home.
The same book adds a second twist in chapter 19. Each planet has a sign where it is weakest, called its fall. Mars falls in Cancer. So the ruler of Aries is at its lowest in the partner’s sign. The Moon, for its part, has no rank at all in Aries.

A planet with no rank in a sign is called peregrine, which means a wanderer. William Lilly used the word in Christian Astrology in 1647. It is not a flaw. It says the Moon takes its tone from its host, and the host of Aries is Mars.
So the pair holds a clear imbalance. The Cancer Moon speaks in its own voice. The Aries Moon speaks in the voice of Mars, the planet that is weakest in Cancer.
Two signs that start a season
Aries and Cancer are both cardinal. Cardinal is the old word for the four signs that open a season. Aries opens spring, at the equinox. Cancer opens summer, at the longest day.
Out of 78 possible Moon pairs, this is the only one that joins fire and water across a square between two cardinal signs. Libra and Capricorn complete the set of season signs, but they pair air and earth.
What does that mean in the old reading? Both Moons want to begin. Neither is built to wait. The Aries Moon begins by acting. The Cancer Moon begins by guarding what it holds. Two starters with two different aims can pull a shared plan in two ways at once.
Is the square exact in degrees?
A sign match is not a degree match. Each sign spans 30 degrees, and each Moon can sit anywhere inside its sign.
Astrologers call the allowed gap an orb. A square is exact at 90 degrees apart. With an orb of 8 degrees, anything from 82 to 98 degrees still counts. We measured how many Aries and Cancer couples fall inside each orb.

These shares hold for every Moon pair, since the Moon spreads evenly across each sign. The rule is one minus the square of what is left. For 8 degrees, that is one minus 22/30 squared.
There is a twist at the edges. Some couples form a different aspect in degrees than in signs. Say the Aries Moon sits at 2 degrees and the Cancer Moon at 29 degrees. The gap is 117 degrees, which is close to a trine. Now say the Aries Moon sits at 28 degrees and the Cancer Moon at 1 degree. The gap is 63 degrees, which is close to a sextile.
At an 8 degree orb, 7.1 percent of Aries and Cancer couples form one of those softer links in degrees. For them the clash by sign is a trine or a sextile in the sky. So look up both degrees before you read this pair as a hard square.
Born near a new Moon or a full Moon
The Moon’s sign also hints at its phase. A phase is the Moon’s angle to the Sun. If the Moon is in the same sign as the Sun, the birth came near a new Moon. If it is in the opposite sign, the birth came near a full Moon.
Cancer stands out here, and the gap is real. Of all people with a Cancer Moon, 8.48 percent also have the Sun in Cancer. That is the highest share of the twelve signs. Only 7.92 percent have the Sun in Capricorn, across the wheel. That is the lowest full Moon share.
The reason is the Sun’s speed. Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July. The Sun then crawls through Cancer, so the Moon has more time to catch it there. For an Aries Moon, the two shares sit near the middle, at 8.21 and 8.18 percent.

The birth-time trap
The Moon moves fast. It stays in a sign for 54.6 hours on average, and each stay runs from about 47 to 61 hours. So it changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days.
Most free tools ask only for a date and place the birth at noon. On a day when the Moon changes sign, noon can give the wrong one. Across all birth moments, a noon chart names the wrong Moon sign 10.98 percent of the time.
A couple has two charts, so the risk adds up. With noon charts for both, 20.75 percent of couples get the wrong Moon pair. That is about 1 couple in 5. Only 31.45 percent of couples can skip the clock, because both were born on a day with no Moon change.

Reading the pair the traditional way
In a chart, the Moon stands for the private self. It is the part that reacts before it thinks. Stephen Arroyo reads it as the way you seek comfort and the way you give it. Liz Greene treats it as an old emotional pattern, one you did not choose.

Where the two Moons meet
- Drive. Both signs start things. A shared goal gets moving fast.
- Protection. Mars defends by force, and the Moon in Cancer defends by care. Together they guard a home well.
- Honesty about need. The Aries Moon says what it wants. The Cancer Moon shows what it needs. Neither hides for long.
- Loyalty. Both hold on hard once the bond is set.
Where they rub
- Speed against depth. The Aries Moon wants a fight over by dinner. The Cancer Moon still feels it the next week.
- Heat against shell. A blunt word from fire can send water into its shell. Silence then reads as a punishment.
- Two leaders. Both signs open a season, and both want to set the pace.
- Home or away. The Cancer Moon wants a base. The Aries Moon wants the next thing.
Modern writers such as Robert Hand read the square as a spur, not a verdict. It forces a choice and so builds skill. In this pair, the skill is timing. One partner learns to wait a day. The other learns to say the hurt out loud before it sets.
What the evidence says
No study has tested Moon signs in couples at scale. The data does not exist. A census gives dates, not birth times, and a Moon sign needs the clock on more than 4 days in 10.
The best test of love signs used the Sun. In 2007 the sociologist David Voas looked at the 2001 census of England and Wales. He studied 10.3 million married couples. He found no link between Sun signs and who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from form errors, not from the stars.
So treat the Aries and Cancer reading as a prompt for a talk about pace and repair. It is not a verdict on the couple.
How we measured it
We used two separate routes over the years 1600 to 2400. Every moment counts the same.
Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each Moon sign change to within a tenth of a second, 128,335 of them. It then summed the time in each sign, with no random draws.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It placed the Moon once an hour, on a grid shifted by 30 minutes from the first. That gave 7,012,656 moments. The two routes agree to within 0.04 points on every Moon figure on this page.
The degree shares assume two people born at unrelated moments. Days and noon charts use Greenwich time. The Ptolemy quotes come from the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 17 and 19.
