Venus in Aries and Venus in Virgo compatibility has a hard reputation, and the old books explain part of it. In both signs, the tradition says Venus is out of place. In Aries she is in detriment. In Virgo she is in fall. Only 6 of the 78 Venus pairs put both partners in one of these weak spots.
The sky adds a second fact that few guides mention. We ran Venus and the Sun from 1600 to 2400. An Aries Venus and a Virgo Venus never share a Sun sign. Their Sun lists do not overlap at all. This page shows why, how common the pair is, and what Ptolemy says about two signs five apart. It gives two readings of him, because his own rules point two ways here.
One point first. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Venus signs predict how a couple will do. Read this as a lens for talking about love, not as a forecast.
Two weak spots, two different kinds
Your Venus sign is the sign Venus was in when you were born. In astrology it shows what you find lovely and how you like to be loved. Each planet also has signs where the tradition says it works well or badly. For Venus, the list is short.

So the two weak spots in this pair are not the same. Detriment in Aries comes from the home axis. Aries faces Libra, where Venus rules. In Aries, the host is Mars, the planet of heat and speed. Venus there loves in a direct and quick way. Our page on Venus in Aries covers this style.
Fall in Virgo comes from the exaltation axis. Virgo faces Pisces, where Venus is exalted. The host of Virgo is Mercury, the planet of words and detail. Ptolemy also gives Mercury its exaltation in Virgo. So in Virgo, Venus is a guest in a house where Mercury is doubly strong. She loves through care, repair and small useful acts. Neither rank is a verdict on a person. The old books say how easily Venus shows her nature in a sign. They do not say who can love well. A Venus out of place can still love deeply. It just does so in the accent of its host.
How common this pair is
Venus does not spend the same time in each sign. Over 800 years, the shares settle close to one in twelve.

Pick two people at random. The chance that one has Venus in Aries and the other has Venus in Virgo is 1.39 percent. That is about one couple in 72. It ranks 30th of the 78 Venus pairs. The pair is ordinary in number. It is unusual in its ranks and in its Suns.
No Sun sign in common
Venus never strays more than about 47 degrees from the Sun, as seen from Earth. We measured the widest gap at 47.28 degrees. So each Venus sign can only sit with five Sun signs. Here they are for this pair, as a share of all people with that Venus.

The Aries Venus list runs from Aquarius to Gemini. The Virgo Venus list runs from Cancer to Scorpio. No sign sits in both. So in every couple with this Venus pair, the two partners were born under different Suns. Their birthdays also fall in different parts of the year. The Aries Venus crowd is born from late January to late June. The Virgo Venus crowd is born from late June to late November.
The top Sun pair is a Taurus Sun with the Aries Venus and a Leo Sun with the Virgo Venus. It covers 8.93 percent of these couples, less than one in eleven. That is a lean, not a rule.
In 41.67 percent of these couples, at least one partner has Venus in their own Sun sign: an Aries Sun with an Aries Venus, or a Virgo Sun with a Virgo Venus. In 5.58 percent, both do. Only that small group will find their Venus pair in a Sun sign column. For most, the Aries Moon and Virgo Moon layer or the Sun layer tells a separate story.
Five signs apart: what Ptolemy says
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book I he names four aspects: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. Aries and Virgo are five signs apart, or 150 degrees. That gap makes none of them. Modern writers call it a quincunx. Ptolemy gave it no name.
He calls signs with no tie disjunct, which means turned away. Later writers say averse. But he sets a condition. A pair is only disjunct if it also lacks his two other ties. One is command and obey. The other is beholding, for signs where the Sun makes days of the same length.
Command does not apply here. Frank Robbins, who made the standard English version, notes that Aries and Libra sit outside that scheme. So Aries commands no sign and obeys none.
Beholding is where two readings part ways.
- By degree. The Sun at 10 degrees Aries gives the same day length as the Sun at 20 degrees Virgo. Each degree of Aries has a twin in Virgo. The two degrees always add up to 30. By this daylight rule, the signs behold each other.
- By whole sign. Robbins lists the beholding pairs sign by sign around Cancer. There, Aries pairs with Libra, and Virgo with Taurus. Under that list, Aries and Virgo do not behold each other. They are fully disjunct.
Both readings claim Ptolemy. The daylight rule follows the reason he gives. The whole-sign list follows how Robbins and some old writers applied it. We give both.
Mirror degrees: how many couples have one
William Lilly, in Christian Astrology in 1647, used the daylight rule by degree. He called the twin point of a planet its antiscion. He read a planet on another’s twin point as a hidden link, close to a friendly aspect. For this pair, the test is easy. Add the two Venus degrees. If they make 30, the two Venuses mirror each other.

So about one couple in five has Venuses on mirror degrees at a 3 degree gap. For them, Lilly would say the pair called turned away is linked after all. For the rest, the whole-sign picture stands.
The quincunx in real degrees
The quincunx has its own question. How close to 150 degrees are the two Venuses? The gap can run from 120 to 180. We used the real spread of Venus inside each sign.

An orb is the slack an astrologer allows around an exact angle. Here is a detail that changes the reading. In 7.15 percent of couples, at an 8 degree orb, the two Venuses form a major aspect across the sign line. Late Aries with early Virgo can make a trine. Early Aries with late Virgo can make an opposition. For those couples, the pair is not averse by degree at all.
How the pair plays out
Read as symbols, the two Venuses have different tools. The Aries Venus shows love by acting. It asks first, moves fast and says what it feels. The Virgo Venus shows love by helping. It notices what needs doing and quietly does it.
Aries is fire and cardinal, which means it opens a season. Virgo is earth and mutable, which means it closes one and adjusts. Of all 78 Venus pairs, this is the only fire and earth quincunx between a cardinal sign and a mutable one.
- The Aries Venus can feel judged when the Virgo Venus fixes a plan.
- The Virgo Venus can feel rushed when the Aries Venus skips the details.
- Both show love through doing, not through long talks.
- Both do well when they name the act of care out loud.
A useful habit is to trade roles now and then. Let the Aries partner handle one small task with care. Let the Virgo partner make one bold, unplanned move. Each learns the other’s accent.

What the evidence says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas looked at 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in the data. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It tested Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Venus signs.
So a weak Venus rank is not a warning about a couple. This page gives the sky behind the label, and the old rules in their own words.
How we measured
We used two methods that share no code. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each time Venus and the Sun entered a sign from 1600 to 2400, to a tenth of a second, and added up the time. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris. It checked the sign of Venus every hour, on a grid set half an hour off the first. That is more than seven million points. Neither drew random numbers. On the Venus figures, they agree within 0.01 points.
The degree shares use the real spread of Venus inside each sign, in steps of a tenth of a degree. They assume two people born at unrelated moments. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth. The Ptolemy readings follow the Loeb edition by Frank Robbins, Book I, chapters 13 to 16.
