What this page can and cannot do
Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. The largest test of love signs came from the sociologist David Voas in 2007. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales, with 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom.
A census has no birth times, so no one has run that test on Moon signs. Read this page as a map of old ideas and real sky facts. It can open a talk between two people. It cannot judge them.
One house, one owner, two guests
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 17, he hands out the signs to the planets. The Sun and Moon, the two lights, get one sign each: Leo for the Sun, Cancer for the Moon. Every other planet gets two.
So Leo is the Sun’s only home. The Moon in Leo is a guest there. William Lilly, writing Christian Astrology in 1647, used the word peregrine for a planet with no rank in its sign. It means a traveler with no house of its own in town. Peregrine is not weak. It means the planet leans on its host.

Now put two such Moons in one home. Each partner brings the same need to be noticed. Each one also knows that need from the inside. That is the gift and the risk of this couple in one line.
Fire and fixed, twice over
Leo is a fire sign. Fire gives heat, speed and open feeling. A fire Moon shows what it feels, fast and in full color.
Leo is also a fixed sign, one that holds on once it has chosen. A fixed fire need does not fade on its own. It waits, and it keeps its ground.
Two fixed fire Moons agree on a lot. Both like warmth in plain sight: gifts, plans, words said out loud. Both are loyal once they commit. Both are proud. When a hurt lands, both are slow to say so, since saying so feels like a loss of rank.

What we measured: Leo Moons and the new moon
Here is the sky fact on this page. A person born near a new moon has the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. A person born near a full moon has the Moon opposite the Sun. You would expect the two cases to come out even. For Leo Moons, they do not.

Only Cancer and Gemini Moons have a higher new moon share. The cause is the Earth’s orbit. The Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July, so the Sun moves slowest in the northern summer. It spends more days in Leo than in Aquarius. More days with the Sun in Leo means more new moons in Leo.

For the couple, the gap grows. In 16.15 percent of Leo Moon couples, at least one partner has the Sun in Leo too. That is near the top of all 78 Moon pairs. In 15.29 percent, at least one partner was born near a full moon, with the Sun in Aquarius.
What does that mean in a reading? A new moon birth joins the self and the needs in one sign, with no built-in counterweight. About one Leo Moon couple in six includes a partner with both lights in the Sun’s house. That partner shines, and needs the light returned. Same sign is not same degree
Two Moons in the same sign form a conjunction by sign. In degrees, they can sit anywhere from 0 to 30 degrees apart. Astrologers allow a margin around the exact angle, called an orb. The Moon moves at a near even pace through each sign, so plain geometry gives the share of couples inside each orb.

These shares hold for every Moon pair, so they are geometry, not a Leo trait. We checked them against the true spread of Moon positions over eight centuries, and they match. The point for this couple is simple. More than half of Leo Moon pairs are not close in degree, even with a wide orb. Your two Moons can share a sign and still sit far apart within it.
How common is a Leo Moon couple?
The Moon spends close to the same time in each sign, between 8.33 and 8.34 percent. So a couple drawn at random has both Moons in Leo about once in 144 times. Every same sign couple comes out at that rate. No Moon pair is rare in any way worth a claim. Anyone who sells you a rare Moon match is selling air.

Check both Moons first
A reading needs two correct Moon signs. The Moon stays in a sign for 54.6 hours on average, from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. It changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. A birth on such a day has two possible Moons.

How we measured
We used two separate routes over the years 1600 to 2400, with all moments weighted the same. Route one used the astronomy-engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun to within a tenth of a second, then added up the exact time in each case. Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris and checked the sky once an hour, on a grid shifted by half an hour. The two routes agree to within 0.05 points.
