Leo Moon and Virgo Moon compatibility joins two signs that sit side by side on the zodiac wheel. Leo belongs to the Sun. Virgo belongs to Mercury, the planet that never strays far from the Sun. So this couple sets a Moon in the Sun’s house next to a Moon in the house of the Sun’s closest companion.
We also found a sky fact that ties the two together. Both Leo Moons and Virgo Moons are born near a new moon more than near a full moon. That is because the Sun slows down in summer, while it crosses these very signs. This page explains the old rules, the numbers, and how we got them.

First, what astrology is not
Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. The largest test of love signs came from the sociologist David Voas in 2007. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales, with 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom.
A census holds no birth times, so no one can run that test on Moon signs. Treat this page as a map of old ideas and real sky facts. It is there to start a talk, not to grade your couple.
The Sun’s house and its neighbor
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 17, he gives each planet its signs. The Sun takes Leo and the Moon takes Cancer, the two signs of high summer. Then he works outward from them.
Mercury gets the next two signs on each side, Virgo and Gemini. His reason is plain: Mercury never gets more than about one sign away from the Sun. So Mercury’s houses sit right next to the houses of the lights.
That makes Leo and Virgo a matched set. The Sun stands for the self and for being seen. Mercury stands for the mind, speech and useful skill. A Leo Moon finds comfort in being noticed. A Virgo Moon finds comfort in being useful. In the sky, the two planets always travel close together. In the chart, these two Moons carry that same closeness, and the same contrast.
Two Moons with no rank
Old astrology rates how well a planet works in each sign. The Moon owns Cancer, is honored in Taurus, and is weak in Capricorn and Scorpio. Leo and Virgo are on none of those lists.
William Lilly, in Christian Astrology in 1647, used the word peregrine for a planet with no rank in its sign. It means a traveler with no house of its own in town. A peregrine Moon is not weak. It leans on the planet that owns the sign.

Among Moon pairs, this one is plain in rank. Neither partner has a Moon at home, and neither has a Moon in trouble. Both have to earn their ease.
Neighbors with their backs turned
In Book 1, chapter 13, Ptolemy names four links between signs: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. Signs next to each other share none of them. In chapter 16, he calls such signs disjunct, which means cut off.
He had two other bonds. Some signs command and others obey, as mirror images across the start of Aries. Some signs see each other, as mirror images across the start of Cancer. Leo’s partners in those two schemes are Scorpio and Taurus. Virgo is in neither. So Leo and Virgo are one of 16 pairs out of 78 with no old bond at all.
Modern astrology gave the 30 degree angle a name, the semi-sextile. It reads it as a mild link between signs that have little in common. That is a newer idea, and a soft one. Both views are worth knowing, and neither one is a verdict.
Fire meets earth
The element of a sign sets the tone of the Moon in it. Leo is fire: warm, quick and open. Virgo is earth: careful, practical and hands on.
The Leo Moon shows love in a way you can see. Gifts, plans, praise out loud. It wants proof that its love landed.
The Virgo Moon shows love by fixing things. It books the doctor, checks the oil, clears the mess. It says less and does more.
Here is where the two can miss each other. The Leo Moon waits for warm words that the Virgo Moon rarely says. The Virgo Moon gives quiet help that the Leo Moon can fail to notice. Each partner is giving. Neither feels it.
Fixed and mutable
Leo is a fixed sign, one that holds on once it has chosen. Virgo is a mutable sign, one that adjusts and sorts. Among the 78 Moon pairs, this is the only semi-sextile between fire and earth that joins a fixed sign to a mutable one.
In practice, the Leo Moon keeps its mood and its view. The Virgo Moon keeps checking and tweaking. The Leo Moon can hear the tweaks as criticism. The Virgo Moon can see the Leo Moon’s pride as a refusal to improve.
What we measured: two summer Moons
Here is the sky fact on this page. A person born near a new moon has the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. A person born near a full moon has the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun. For both Moons in this couple, the new moon case wins.

The cause is the Earth’s orbit. The Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July, so the Sun moves slowest in the northern summer. It spends more days in Leo and Virgo than in Aquarius and Pisces. More days with the Sun in a sign means more new moons there.
For the couple, 16.05 percent include at least one partner born with the Moon in their own Sun sign. In 15.38 percent, at least one partner was born near a full moon. The gap is small, but it is real, and it holds on both routes we used.

Common by Sun, ordinary by Moon
Through the Sun, Leo and Virgo is a special pair. Our page on Leo and Virgo Sun sign compatibility shows it is the most common mixed couple in US births, because late summer is peak birth season.
The Moon does not work that way. It spends close to the same time in every sign, between 8.33 and 8.34 percent. Any mixed Moon pair comes out at about 1 couple in 72. So a Leo and Virgo Moon couple is as common as any other mixed pair. The Sun fact and the Moon fact do not mix.
How close are the two Moons in degrees?
An angle by sign is not always exact in degrees. Astrologers allow a margin around the exact angle, called an orb. The Moon moves at a near even pace through each sign, so plain geometry gives the share of couples inside each orb.

These shares hold for every Moon pair, so they are geometry, not a trait of this one. Two edge cases matter here. A late Leo Moon and an early Virgo Moon can sit side by side, a real conjunction across the sign line. An early Leo Moon and a late Virgo Moon can sit 60 degrees apart, a real sextile. At an 8 degree orb, each case covers 3.56 percent of couples.
Check both Moons first
A reading needs two correct Moon signs. The Moon stays in a sign for 54.6 hours on average, from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. It changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. A birth on such a day has two possible Moons.
Tools with no birth time use noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign in 10.98 percent of charts. For a couple, it gives the wrong pair in about 1 case in 5. Only 31 percent of couples have both Moons fixed by their dates alone. Our pivot page on Moon sign compatibility gives the full count.
This pair has a special trap. The two signs touch, so a late Leo Moon can turn out to be an early Virgo Moon. A couple read as Leo and Virgo might be Virgo and Virgo, or Leo and Leo. The birth time settles it.

How we measured
We used two separate routes over the years 1600 to 2400, with all moments weighted the same. Route one used the astronomy-engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun to within a tenth of a second, then added up the exact time in each case. Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris and checked the sky once an hour, on a grid shifted by half an hour. The two routes agree to within 0.05 points, and they give the same new moon and full moon shares.
The noon test uses calendar days in Greenwich time, with a chart at 12:00. For the old rules, we read the Tetrabiblos, Book 1, chapters 13 to 17, in the Robbins translation, and Lilly’s Christian Astrology.

Are a Leo Moon and a Virgo Moon compatible?
Astrology reads them as neighbors with no old bond, a fire Moon beside an earth Moon. One shows love with words, the other with help. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple does, so use the reading as a lens.
Why are Leo and Virgo called disjunct?
Ptolemy’s four aspects need signs two, three, four or six apart. Signs next to each other fit none of them, and share no other old link. So he said they cannot see each other.
Is the Moon weak in Virgo or in Leo?
No. The Moon has no rank in either sign, which tradition calls peregrine. It leans on the ruler of the sign, the Sun for Leo and Mercury for Virgo.
Why are Leo and Virgo Moons born near the new moon more?
The Sun moves slowest in the northern summer, so it lingers in Leo and Virgo. That gives more new moons in those signs. 8.43 percent of Leo Moons and 8.32 percent of Virgo Moons share their sign with the Sun.

On 56 percent of days, yes, since the Moon stays in one sign all day. On the other days, you need a birth time. A noon guess is wrong in about 1 chart in 9.
