Gemini Moon and Capricorn Moon compatibility looks like a pair with nothing to share. The signs sit five signs apart, an angle called a quincunx. Ptolemy did not count that angle as an aspect. Air meets earth, and a quick sign meets a careful one.
Yet Ptolemy did give these two signs a bond, and a strict one. In his system, Gemini commands and Capricorn obeys. Add one more twist: the Moon sits in exile in Capricorn, far from its home. So the old books pair a neutral Moon that gives the orders with a Moon out of place that follows them.

Before anything else
Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. The largest test of love signs came from the sociologist David Voas in 2007. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales, with 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom.
A census holds no birth times, so no one has run that test on Moon signs. Read this page as a map of old ideas and real sky facts. Use it to talk, not to judge.
Two Moons, two kinds of comfort
Your Moon sign is the part of the sky the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as your inner weather: what calms you, what you need when tired, and how you show care.

The quincunx: no aspect at all
To compare two Moons, astrologers count the signs between them. Gemini and Capricorn sit five signs apart. Modern astrologers call that distance a quincunx, from a Latin word for five twelfths.
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 13, he lists only four angles: the sextile, square, trine and opposition. The quincunx is not one of them. In chapter 16, he calls signs one or five apart disjunct, which means alien to each other.
But he adds a key clause. Signs are only fully disjunct when no other rule links them. For Gemini and Capricorn, another rule does.
- Element: Gemini is air, the element of thought. Capricorn is earth, the element of form and work.
- Mode: Gemini is mutable and adapts. Capricorn is cardinal and starts things.
- Ruler: Mercury rules Gemini. Saturn rules Capricorn.
Among all 78 Moon pairs, this is the only quincunx between an air sign and an earth sign where one is mutable and the other cardinal.
Gemini commands, Capricorn obeys
In Book 1, chapter 14, Ptolemy links signs that sit at the same distance from the start of Aries. Picture the wheel folded along the line from Aries to Libra. Signs that land on top of each other form a pair.
Gemini sits 60 to 90 degrees after the start of Aries. Capricorn sits 60 to 90 degrees before it. So they fold onto each other. Ptolemy says such signs rise in the same span of time, and lie on the same parallel. He calls the sign in the summer half the one that commands. The sign in the winter half obeys.
Gemini is a summer sign, so Gemini commands. Capricorn is a winter sign, so Capricorn obeys. The bond runs one way.
That makes this pair rare. It has no aspect, yet it is not disjunct. In our table of 78 Moon pairs, only four share that mix of no aspect and a command link. We read it by whole signs here, as the chapter sets it out.
What the command means, and what it does not
The rule is about signs, not people. It does not say the Gemini partner should lead. In the old frame, it says the Gemini Moon sets the tone, and the Capricorn Moon answers it. The Moon in Gemini speaks first. The Moon in Capricorn listens, then acts.
The mirror points of Lilly
William Lilly, in Christian Astrology in 1647, read the same fold in degrees. He called the mirror point across the Aries to Libra line the contra-antiscion. Two points mirror each other when their degrees in the two signs add up to 30. So 10 degrees Gemini mirrors 20 degrees Capricorn.
Lilly read a contra-antiscion like a square or an opposition, a hard contact. The friendly mirror, across the Cancer to Capricorn line, he read like a trine or sextile. So the two readings of this fold do not agree. Ptolemy’s whole-sign rule sees a bond of rank. Lilly’s degree rule sees a point of friction.

So the degree link is real in about one couple in five, at a 3 degree margin. In the rest, only the whole-sign bond applies. We show both readings. Neither is a test result.
The Moon in exile
Old astrology rates how at ease a planet is in each sign. The Moon’s home is Cancer. The sign straight across, Capricorn, is its exile, also called detriment. A planet in exile is like a guest in a house with rules it did not write.
In Book 1, chapter 17, Ptolemy explains the pattern. The Sun and Moon own Leo and Cancer, the warm signs of summer. Saturn, the cold and distant planet, owns the two signs across from them, Capricorn and Aquarius.
That rank rates the Moon’s comfort, not the person. A Capricorn Moon is a Moon that waits for proof before it trusts. The Gemini Moon has no major rank. So in this pair, the commanding sign holds a neutral Moon, and the obeying sign holds a Moon in exile. Hidden angles in degrees
A quincunx by sign is not always 150 degrees in the sky. Astrologers allow a margin around an exact angle, called an orb.

Those shares hold for every Moon pair. They come from geometry. The edge cases are more useful. A late Gemini Moon and an early Capricorn Moon can sit about 180 degrees apart, a real opposition. An early Gemini Moon and a late Capricorn Moon can sit about 120 degrees apart, a real trine. At an 8 degree orb, each case covers 3.56 percent of couples, or 7.11 percent in all.
A sky fact: the full moon lean
A person born near a new moon has the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. A person born near a full moon has the Moon in the sign across from the Sun. The shares differ by sign, and the gaps are real.

The two Moons lean in opposite ways. The Gemini Moon leans to the new moon. The Capricorn Moon has the highest full moon share of all twelve signs. Both leans come from the Sun’s slow pace in early summer, when the Earth is farthest from it.
For the couple, 15.76 percent include at least one partner born near a full moon. In 15.72 percent, at least one partner has Moon and Sun in the same sign. The gap is tiny. Our guide to moon phase compatibility shows how to find your own phase.
Daily life with these two Moons
Take a problem at home. The Gemini Moon wants to talk about it, test ideas and hear the other side. The Capricorn Moon wants a plan and a first step. Talk without action feels empty to it. Action without talk feels cold to Gemini.
They can split the work well. Gemini brings options and news. Capricorn picks one and sees it through. The risk is that Gemini feels unheard and Capricorn feels rushed. A short talk, then a clear plan, suits both.
Get both Moons right first
A reading needs two correct Moon signs. The Moon stays in a sign for 54.6 hours on average, and changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. A birth on such a day has two possible Moons.
Tools with no birth time use noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign in 10.98 percent of charts. For a couple, it gives the wrong pair in about 1 case in 5. Only 31 percent of couples have both Moons fixed by their dates alone. Our pivot page on Moon sign compatibility gives the full count.
A Gemini Moon near a sign change might be a Taurus or Cancer Moon. A Capricorn Moon might be a Sagittarius or Aquarius Moon. The birth time settles it.

How we measured
We used two separate routes over the years 1600 to 2400, with all moments weighted the same. Route one used the astronomy-engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun to within a tenth of a second, then added up the exact time in each case. Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris and checked the sky once an hour, on a grid shifted by half an hour. The two routes agree to within 0.05 points.
The degree shares assume each Moon can sit at any point of its sign, and we checked that against the true spread. The noon test uses calendar days in Greenwich time, with a chart at 12:00.
