The trine, in plain words
Your Moon sign is the part of the sky the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as the private self: what calms you, what upsets you, and how you care for others.
To compare two Moons, you count the signs between them. Virgo and Capricorn sit four signs apart. That gap is a trine, an angle of 120 degrees. In Book 1 of the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. A trine joins two signs of the same element. Capricorn starts, Virgo adjusts
Each sign has a mode. A cardinal sign opens a season. A fixed sign holds the middle of it. A mutable sign closes it and gets ready for change. There are three earth signs, one of each mode: Capricorn is cardinal, Taurus is fixed, Virgo is mutable.
Capricorn opens winter at the December solstice, the shortest day of the year in the north. So a Capricorn Moon calms down by taking charge. It sets a goal and a date. Virgo closes summer, just before the fall equinox. So a Virgo Moon calms down by fixing what is not quite right. It checks, sorts, and improves.
Put together, the roles fit like a two-person crew. Capricorn draws the plan. Virgo finds the flaws in it before they cost anything. Capricorn keeps the course. Virgo keeps the details straight. Neither one needs the other to cheer loudly. Both show love through things done.
The split has a shadow side too. Capricorn can feel that Virgo second-guesses every choice. Virgo can feel that Capricorn decides first and asks later. The trine does not stop the clash. It makes the clash easier to talk about, because both speak the same plain language of tasks.
The exiled Moon
Tradition gives each planet special signs. The Moon’s home is Cancer, where it rules. Its exaltation, where it is an honored guest, is Taurus. The sign opposite the home is the exile, or detriment. For the Moon, that is Capricorn. William Lilly lists it this way in his Christian Astrology of 1647.
A Moon in exile is not a bad Moon. Think of a person living abroad. Things work, but nothing comes for free. The Moon seeks comfort and closeness. Saturn, the host of Capricorn, stands for limits and time. So a Capricorn Moon routes its feelings through duty. It holds a hard feeling for a long time and shows care by fixing things. The Virgo Moon, a guest with no title
The Moon holds no major rank in Virgo. It is not at home, not honored, not in exile and not in its fall. Astrologers call that peregrine, from a Latin word for a traveler. A Virgo Moon earns its ease by being useful. That fits well next to a Capricorn Moon, which earns its ease by being reliable. Neither partner expects comfort to fall from the sky.
Two hosts: Mercury and Saturn
Each sign has a ruling planet, the host of the house. Mercury rules Virgo. Saturn rules Capricorn. In the old scheme, neither host has a major rank in the other’s sign. So there is no swap of favors between the two houses.
What the hosts share is a style. Mercury deals in facts and words. Saturn deals in rules and time. Both are cool planets, not warm ones. Read as a symbol, this couple builds trust through plans kept and words kept. A warm gesture helps, but a promise kept on time helps more.
Ptolemy adds one more layer. In Book 1, chapter 18, he gives each element group, called a triplicity, its own rulers. For the earth signs, the rulers are Venus by day and the Moon by night. So in a night birth, the Moon has a small share of rank in all three earth signs, Virgo and Capricorn included. The two readings stand side by side: exile by house, a share of rank by triplicity at night.
Is the trine exact?
A trine by sign is not always a trine by degree. Take a Moon at 29 degrees of Virgo and a Moon at 1 degree of Capricorn. They are four signs apart. Yet the real gap is 92 degrees. That is a square, the angle of friction.
Astrologers allow some slack around an exact angle, called an orb. Here is the share of couples whose two Moons form a true trine.

These values hold for every Moon pair. The Moon spends close to the same time in each degree, so the math is plain. With an 8 degree orb, fewer than half of Virgo Moon and Capricorn Moon couples have an exact trine. In about 3.6 percent, the Moons form a square across the sign line instead. The reverse case gives a gap near 150 degrees, which Ptolemy does not count as an aspect at all.
Capricorn Moons and full moons
Here is a small pattern that is real. A person born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. One born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.
Of all people with a Capricorn Moon, 8.48 percent have the Sun in Cancer, the opposite sign. That is the highest full moon share of any Moon sign. Only 7.94 percent have the Sun in Capricorn too. That is the lowest new moon share of any Moon sign.
The reason is the Sun’s speed. It moves slowest in early July, when it crosses Cancer. It moves fastest in early January, when it crosses Capricorn. So more birthdays fall with the Sun in Cancer, and fewer with the Sun in Capricorn.

The Virgo Moon leans the other way, toward new moon births. In a couple, the two leanings almost cancel out. In 15.60 percent of Virgo Moon and Capricorn Moon couples, at least one partner is a new moon birth. In 15.86 percent, at least one is a full moon birth.
What the modes mean at home
The trine gives the pair a shared base. The modes decide how the days run. Here are the moments where the split of roles shows most.
- A new project: Capricorn sets the goal, Virgo writes the steps.
- A money choice: Capricorn thinks in years, Virgo checks this month.
- A bad day: Capricorn goes quiet and works, Virgo worries and tidies.
- A fight: Capricorn wants a ruling, Virgo wants the facts sorted first.
Four habits fit the symbols. First, agree on who owns which part of a plan. Second, let Virgo review a plan before it starts, not after. Third, give the Capricorn Moon one plain sentence about feelings, not only tasks. Fourth, set a time to rest that neither one fills with work. Both of these Moons can turn love into labor and forget to stop.
Ptolemy’s other ties
Ptolemy lists links between signs beyond the aspects. Some signs “command and obey.” Others “behold” each other, because their days have the same length. For both ties, two ways of counting exist, one by whole sign and one by degree. Under both, Virgo and Capricorn have no such tie. Their link is the trine alone, and a trine is the strongest of the friendly angles in his list.
How common is this couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank the Moon pairs. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.
Your Moon sign needs a birth time
The Moon stays in one sign for about 54.6 hours on average, and between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. So on 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour. A person born on such a day has two possible Moon signs.
Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. For a couple, about 20.75 percent get the wrong Moon pair from two noon charts. Only 31.45 percent have both Moons fixed by the date alone. A Capricorn Moon born early in the day could be a Sagittarius Moon. A Virgo Moon born late could be a Libra Moon.
How we measured
We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. It then summed the time interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
What the research says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.
So the trine is not a promise, and the exile is not a warning. They are symbols. A Virgo Moon and a Capricorn Moon share a practical way of caring. The symbols point to a crew of two, one who starts and one who adjusts.
