Cancer Moon and Scorpio Moon compatibility starts with an easy fact. Both Moons sit in water signs, four signs apart. Astrologers call that link a trine, and the old books count it as the most harmonious angle of all.
The old ranks tell a second story. Cancer is the Moon’s home. Scorpio is the Moon’s fall, the sign where it is weakest. And Mars, the ruler of Scorpio, falls in Cancer. So each sign is the low point of the other sign’s ruler. That is a rare mirror inside a gentle angle.

A word on what astrology can prove
Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that two Moon signs predict how a couple will do. The largest test of love signs came from the sociologist David Voas in 2007. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales, with 10.3 million married couples. Sun signs had no effect on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors on the forms.
No one can run that test on Moon signs, since a census has no birth times. So read this page as a map of old ideas and real sky facts. Use it to start a talk, not to grade a couple.
The trine: harmony by angle
Claude Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 13, he names four aspects. An aspect is a fixed angle between two points of the sky. The four are the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile.
He calls the trine and the sextile harmonious. His reason is that both join signs of the same kind. Cancer and Scorpio are both feminine signs in his scheme. That word is an old label for the receptive signs. It says nothing about the gender of the people.
In Book 4, on marriage, he adds a rule. Unions last, he writes, when the lights of the two charts sit in trine or sextile. The lights are the Sun and the Moon. Modern Moon matching keeps one piece of that rule, the Moon of one chart against the Moon of the other.
Water is the element of feeling in modern astrology. Two water Moons read moods fast and speak the same inner language. A look or a silence carries as much as a speech. For this couple, that shared code is the core of the trine.
The ranks: home meets fall
Old astrology grades how comfortable a planet is in each sign. These grades are called dignities. Ptolemy set them out in Book 1, and William Lilly listed them again in Christian Astrology in 1647.
Cancer: the Moon at home
Ptolemy explains the choice in Book 1, chapter 17. Cancer and Leo are the most northern signs, the ones closest to the top of the sky in summer. So they went to the two lights. Leo went to the Sun, and Cancer went to the Moon. A planet in its own sign is called in domicile. It acts as itself, with nothing to prove.

Scorpio: the Moon in fall
In chapter 19, Ptolemy gives each planet a sign of honor, its exaltation. The sign across the wheel is its fall, or depression in his words. The Moon is exalted in Taurus. So its fall is Scorpio, straight across.
His reason is the new moon in spring. The Moon meets the Sun in Aries and shows its first light in Taurus. There it grows. In Scorpio, the opposite sign, it loses that lift. A Moon in fall does not mean a bad person. It means the Moon works against the grain of the sign. Scorpio holds feeling under pressure and shows it in stages.

The mirror: each ruler falls in the other sign
Every sign has a ruler, a planet that owns it. In the old scheme, the Moon rules Cancer and Mars rules Scorpio. Now look at where each ruler is weakest.

Ptolemy gives the reason for Mars in the same chapter. Mars is hot and fiery. It is at its best in Capricorn, where it sits farthest south. Cancer is the opposite sign, so Mars falls there.
The result is a neat mirror. Each partner’s Moon sits in the sign where the other sign’s ruler loses strength. Read as a symbol, each one lives on ground that humbles the other’s planet. The Cancer side has no taste for the open fight that Mars likes. The Scorpio side has little room for the soft, open mood the Moon likes.
That does not make the couple weak. It points to a clear task. Each partner holds something the other one finds hard to do in public. The Cancer Moon can hold the soft part. The Scorpio Moon can hold the hard truth. The trine gives them a calm channel to trade.

One triangle, three rulers
Ptolemy sorts the twelve signs into four triangles, one per element. In chapter 18 he gives the water triangle to Mars, since Scorpio is one of Mars’s houses. The Moon rules it with him by night, and Venus by day.
So both Moons sit in a group the Moon helps to govern. And both sit in a group Mars governs. The two planets that fall in each other’s sign share the same triangle. Read as a symbol, the couple shares one house with two keys.
The two signs differ in mode. Cancer is a cardinal sign. Cardinal signs open a season, and Cancer opens summer. Scorpio is a fixed sign. Fixed signs hold the middle of a season. Ptolemy notes that Cancer sits near the summer circle and Scorpio lies near the winter one.
In practice, the Cancer Moon moves first. It reaches out, starts the talk and makes the nest. The Scorpio Moon holds. It keeps a feeling for a long time, for good and for bad. Among the 78 Moon pairs, this is the only water trine between a cardinal and a fixed sign.
What we measured: new moon and full moon births
A person born near a new moon has the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. A person born near a full moon has the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun. For each Moon sign, we counted both cases over the years 1600 to 2400.

The Cancer Moon has the highest new moon share of all twelve signs. It has the lowest full moon share too. The cause is the Earth’s orbit. The Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July, so the Sun moves slowest then. It lingers in Cancer, and the Moon has more time to meet it there.
The Scorpio Moon leans the other way. Its full moon happens with the Sun in Taurus, in late spring, when the Sun is slower than average. Its new moon needs the Sun in Scorpio, in the fall, when the Sun is faster.
For the couple, 15.86 percent include at least one partner born with the Moon in their own Sun sign. In 15.59 percent, at least one partner has the Moon opposite their Sun. The gap is small. It will not decide anything, but it is a true feature of the sky.

How many couples have an exact trine?
A trine by sign is not always 120 degrees in the sky. Astrologers allow a margin around the exact angle. This margin is called an orb. The Moon moves at a near even pace through a sign, so geometry gives the share of couples inside each orb. We checked it on the true spread of Moon positions.

These shares hold for every Moon pair. They are geometry, not a trait of this couple. One edge case is special, though. A late Cancer Moon and an early Scorpio Moon can sit about 90 degrees apart. That is a real square hidden inside a trine by sign. It happens in 3.56 percent of couples with an 8 degree orb.
Check both Moons before you read
Every mixed Moon pair shows up in about 1 couple in 72. The Moon spends close to the same time in each sign, so no Moon pair is rare. Same-sign pairs come to about 1 couple in 144. That is the only solid gap.
The harder problem is the birth time. The Moon stays in a sign for 54.6 hours on average, from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. It changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. A birth on such a day has two possible Moons.
Free tools with no birth time use noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign in 10.98 percent of charts. For a couple, it gives the wrong pair in about 1 case in 5. Only 31 percent of couples have both Moons fixed by their dates alone. Our pivot page on Moon sign compatibility gives the full count.
For this pair, a Cancer Moon near a sign change might be a Gemini or Leo Moon. A Scorpio Moon might be a Libra or Sagittarius Moon. The birth time settles it.

How we measured
We used two separate routes over the years 1600 to 2400, with every moment given the same weight. Route one used the astronomy-engine library. It found each sign change of the Moon and the Sun to a tenth of a second. It then added up the exact time in each case. Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris and checked the sky once an hour, on a grid shifted by half an hour. The two routes agree to within 0.05 points.
The noon test uses calendar days in Greenwich time, with a chart at 12:00. For the old rules, we read the Tetrabiblos, Book 1, chapters 13 to 19, and Book 4, in the Robbins translation. We checked the ranks against Lilly’s Christian Astrology.
