Gemini Moon and Leo Moon compatibility joins two signs that stand on either side of Cancer, the Moon’s own home. Gemini sits one sign before it. Leo sits one sign after it, in the home of the Sun. So this couple brings together the two Moons that frame the Moon’s house, with the house itself left empty between them.
That picture has a long history. Ptolemy set Cancer and Leo apart as the homes of the two lights, the Moon and the Sun. His later editor listed Gemini and Leo as the first pair of signs that “behold” each other across that center. This page looks at what the old rules say, and at what we measured over eight centuries of real Moon positions.
One point first. Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. Read what follows as a way to talk about needs, not as a forecast.

So one partner wants to discuss the mood. The other wants the mood to be noticed. Both are ways to reach out. Neither pulls away, which is one reason the old books count this pair as friendly.
Two signs around the Moon’s home
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in the second century. In Book 1, chapter 17, he explains why the Sun and the Moon rule the signs they do. Cancer and Leo lie closest to the top of the sky in the northern summer. They bring the most heat and light. So he gave Leo to the Sun and Cancer to the Moon.
Every other planet then takes a sign on each side of that pair. Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun, takes the next two out: Gemini and Virgo. Venus takes Taurus and Libra. Mars, Jupiter and Saturn follow in turn.
Put the two Moons of this couple on that map. The Gemini Moon sits in a house of Mercury, right next to the Moon’s own home. The Leo Moon sits in the house of the Sun, the Moon’s partner light. Neither partner has the Moon at home. Both have it close to home, one on each side.
A Moon with no rank, twice
Tradition gives each planet signs where it is strong or weak. These ranks are called dignities. Ptolemy and William Lilly agree on the Moon’s list. It rules Cancer. It is exalted, or honored, in Taurus. It is weak in Capricorn, across from its home, and in Scorpio, where it is said to fall.
Gemini and Leo are on none of those lists. A planet with no rank in its sign is called peregrine, which means foreign. Lilly’s table has smaller ranks too. None of them gives the Moon a share of Gemini or Leo either.
Lilly splits each sign into three faces of ten degrees. Gemini’s faces go to Jupiter, Mars and the Sun. Leo’s go to Saturn, Jupiter and Mars. He also gives each group of three signs a set of lords, called the triplicity. The air group goes to Saturn and Mercury. The fire group goes to the Sun and Jupiter. The Moon holds a seat in neither.
So both Moons here are guests, with no minor claim at all, on either side of the couple.
A foreign planet takes its cue from the lord of the sign it sits in. Astrologers call that lord the dispositor. A Gemini Moon answers to Mercury, the planet of speech and trade. A Leo Moon answers to the Sun, the planet of pride and purpose. In a reading, the Gemini partner seeks comfort through talk, and the Leo partner through being valued. None of this rates the people. It only rates how easily the Moon works in each chart.
Do Gemini and Leo behold each other?
In Book 1, chapter 15, Ptolemy names signs that “behold” each other. To behold means to see, or to be linked by light. These are signs the same distance from a solstice. The solstices are the two turning points of the year. When the Sun is in either sign of such a pair, the days have the same length.
Readers take that rule in two ways. The first counts whole signs. Frank Robbins made the standard English version in 1940. In his note 83, he lists the pairs this way, and Gemini and Leo come first. The logic is plain. Gemini is one sign before Cancer, where the June solstice falls. Leo is one sign after it.
The second counts degree by degree. William Lilly worked this way in Christian Astrology, in 1647. Each degree has a mirror point across the solstice line, called its antiscion. On that reading, Gemini mirrors Cancer, and Leo mirrors Taurus. Gemini and Leo meet at a single point, where both signs begin.
We checked how many couples of this pair land on such mirror points. Within 1 degree, about 6 couples in 10,000 do. Within 3 degrees, about 5 in 1,000 do. So by degrees, this pair almost never beholds.

The sextile, by sign and by degree
Signs two apart form a sextile, an angle of 60 degrees. Ptolemy counts it among the friendly angles in Book 1, chapter 13. Both signs here are masculine, or daytime, signs. Air and fire feed each other in the old theory, like wind on a flame.
There is a catch. A sign is 30 degrees wide, so a sextile by sign is not always 60 degrees by degree. Astrologers allow some leeway around an exact angle. They call it the orb. We asked what share of these couples have Moons within a given orb of 60 degrees.

These values hold for every pair of different Moon signs. The Moon crosses each sign at an even pace over a long span, so the answer is plain geometry. Our long count of real positions gave the same values.
At the edges, the picture changes. An early Gemini Moon and a late Leo Moon can sit close to 90 degrees apart. That is a square, a tense angle. Within 8 degrees, about 3.6 couples in 100 have that hidden square instead. A late Gemini Moon and an early Leo Moon sit near 30 degrees apart, which is no major angle at all. If your Moons sit near the border, read the degrees, not the sign names.
The new moon lean
Here the signs do differ, and the gap is real. Some people are born with the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. That is a birth near the new moon. Others are born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun. That is a birth near the full moon.
The share depends on how long the Sun stays in a sign. The Earth moves slowest around the Sun in early July. So the Sun lingers in the summer signs. The longer it stays, the more time the Moon has to pass through the same sign with it. The short winter signs work the other way.

Both signs sit in the slow summer stretch. So this couple leans toward new moon births. Some 16.17 in 100 of these couples include at least one partner born with the Sun and Moon in the same sign. That ranks fifth of all 78 Moon pairs. It is the highest of the twelve sextile pairs.
The full moon side runs the other way. Only 15.28 in 100 include a partner born with the Moon opposite the Sun. That ranks 74th of 78. The gaps are small, but both of our counting routes give them. Our guide to moon phase compatibility shows how to find each partner’s phase.
Can you trust your Moon pair?
The Moon spends about 54.6 hours in each sign on average, from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. It changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. On those days, a birth date alone gives two possible Moon signs.
Many free tools set the birth time to noon. From 1600 to 2400, that guess gives the wrong Moon sign 10.98 percent of the time. For a couple, both guesses must be right. So about one couple in five reads the wrong Moon pair from dates alone. For this pair, the figure is 20.8 in 100.
For this pair, a wrong guess slides one sign. A Gemini Moon born late in the day can turn out to be a Cancer Moon. A Leo Moon born early can turn out to be a Cancer Moon as well. How we counted
Every figure here comes from one table of 78 Moon pairs, built for this site. It covers every moment from 1600 to 2400, in the tropical zodiac, as seen from the Earth. Two separate routes built it.
The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each Moon sign change to a tenth of a second and summed the exact time in each sign. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris, on an hourly grid set half an hour apart from the first. No random draws were used.
The two routes agree within 0.05 points on every figure. That check sets a limit. Each Moon sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of all time. The gap between signs is smaller than the gap between routes. So we do not rank Moon pairs by rarity. Any two different Moon signs meet in about 1 couple in 72.
What the evidence says about love signs
The best test of sign matching used the Sun, not the Moon. In 2007 the sociologist David Voas studied the 2001 census of England and Wales. He looked at about 10.3 million married couples. He found no link between Sun signs and who marries whom.
No census records birth times, so no one can run that test on Moons. Treat this pair as a lens for talk, not a verdict.
Living with a Gemini Moon and a Leo Moon
