Virgo Moon and Aquarius Moon compatibility starts from a blank in the old books. Virgo and Aquarius sit five signs apart. Ptolemy, the Greek astronomer who set the rules for sign links, gives this pair no aspect, no bond of command, and no bond of equal days. He calls such signs “disjunct,” which means unlinked. Of the 78 possible Moon pairs, only 16 are cut off this completely. This is one of them.
That is the thesis of this page. With no classical tie, the couple has no ready-made script. What joins them is what they build. This page explains what “no tie” means, and what it does not mean. Three ties, none of them here
Your Moon sign is the part of the sky the Moon stood in when you were born. Astrologers read it as the private self: what calms you and how you care for people. To compare two Moons, they check for links between the two signs. Ptolemy, in Book 1 of the Tetrabiblos, lists three kinds.
The first is the aspect. Signs two, three, four or six apart form a sextile, a square, a trine or an opposition. Five apart is not on his list. The second tie is “command and obey.” It joins signs at the same distance from an equinox. The third is “beholding.” It joins signs whose days have the same length. Then he names the leftovers. Signs one or five apart, with none of these ties, are disjunct, or averse. They are said to have no way to see each other.

What “no tie” does not mean
An averse pair is not a doomed pair. The word describes a sight line in the sky, not two people. Think of two rooms in one house with no door between them. You can still live well in both rooms. You just have to walk around through the hall.
Modern astrologers gave the 150 degree gap a name, the quincunx, or inconjunct. They read it as a gap that asks for constant small changes. Neither sign shares an element, a mode or a kind with the other. So nothing lines up by default. Every habit has to be agreed on, one at a time.
Earth and air, mutable and fixed
Virgo is an earth sign. Earth takes in the world through the senses. It trusts what it can touch and check. Aquarius is an air sign. Air takes in the world through ideas. It trusts what it can explain.
The modes cross too. Virgo is mutable, a sign that closes a season and adapts. Aquarius is fixed, a sign that holds the middle of a season and keeps its course. So Virgo bends and Aquarius holds. That can work well. Virgo adjusts the plan, and Aquarius keeps the goal steady. It can grate as well. Virgo wants to fix the detail today. Aquarius wants to stick to the principle, whatever the detail.
Last, the kind of sign. Virgo is a night sign, inward and private. Aquarius is a day sign, outward and social. A Virgo Moon rests at home with a short list. An Aquarius Moon rests among friends, or in a cause bigger than the two of them.
The Virgo Moon: care as a task

The Aquarius Moon: care as a principle
The Moon has no major rank in Aquarius either. So neither partner starts with an edge. An Aquarius Moon turns a feeling into a question. Within seconds, it wants to know what happened and why. It is loyal to a principle first, and to a person through that principle. When upset, it steps back to think.

Where they meet anyway
Two unlinked signs can still share a lot. Here, the shared ground is cool heads. Mercury, the host of Virgo, deals in facts and words. Saturn, the host of Aquarius, deals in rules and time. Neither host is a warm planet. Both Moons would rather understand a feeling than drown in it.
That gives the couple a common tool: the calm talk. A Virgo Moon and an Aquarius Moon can sit down, name the problem, and plan. What they miss is the warm step before the talk. Neither one leads with a hug. So the couple works best when one of them makes that step on purpose.

Do the two Moons form an angle?
Signs five apart are 150 degrees apart on average. But each Moon can sit anywhere inside its sign. Here is the share of couples whose two Moons are within a set orb of an exact 150 degrees. An orb is the slack astrologers allow around an exact angle.

These values hold for every Moon pair, since the Moon spends close to the same time in each degree. Now the twist. Some couples in this pair do form one of Ptolemy’s angles, across the sign line. Take a Moon at 29 degrees of Virgo and a Moon at 1 degree of Aquarius. The gap is 122 degrees, close to a trine. Take a Moon at 1 degree of Virgo and one at 29 degrees of Aquarius. The gap is 178 degrees, close to an opposition.
With an 8 degree orb, about 7.1 percent of Virgo Moon and Aquarius Moon couples form a trine or an opposition this way. For them, the signs are averse, but the Moons are not. The antiscia, a mirror link by degree, gives nothing here: no couple in this pair has one. Only a birth time can tell you which group you are in.
New moon and full moon births
Here is a small pattern that is real. A person born with the Moon and the Sun in the same sign is a new moon birth, by sign. One born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun is a full moon birth, by sign. For exact phases, see our page on moon phase compatibility.
The Sun does not move at one speed. It is slowest in early July and fastest in early January. So the Moon meets it, or faces it, a little more in some signs than in others.

Read it like this. Of all people with an Aquarius Moon, 8.43 percent have the Sun in Leo, the opposite sign. The Sun crosses Leo in late July and August, when it is still slow. It crosses Aquarius in late January and February, when it is fast. So Aquarius Moons lean toward full moon births, and Virgo Moons lean toward new moon births.
In a couple, the two leanings almost cancel out. In 15.63 percent of Virgo Moon and Aquarius Moon couples, at least one partner is a new moon birth. In 15.81 percent, at least one is a full moon birth.
How common is this couple?
The Moon spends almost the same time in each sign. From 1600 to 2400, each sign holds between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of the time. So any pair of two different Moon signs comes up about 1 time in 72. A same-sign pair comes up about 1 time in 144. We do not rank the Moon pairs. The gaps between them are smaller than the error of our method.
A birth time decides the pair
The Moon moves fast. It stays in one sign for about 54.6 hours on average, and between 46.9 and 61.1 hours. So on 43.92 percent of days, it changes sign at some hour. A person born on such a day has two possible Moon signs.
Many free tools guess a birth time of noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign to about one person in nine, or 10.98 percent. For a couple, about 20.75 percent get the wrong Moon pair from two noon charts, one couple in five. Only 31.45 percent have both Moons fixed by the date alone. For this pair, the stakes are high. A Virgo Moon born late in the day could be a Libra Moon. Libra and Aquarius form a trine, a very different match.
How we measured
We used two routes that share no code and no star tables. Route one used the Astronomy Engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun from 1600 to 2400, each to a tenth of a second. It then summed the time interval by interval. The noon test used a chart set at 12:00 UTC on each day.
Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris. It read the Moon’s sign every hour over the same span, on a grid set half an hour apart from route one. That makes over seven million points. Neither route drew random numbers. On every Moon figure here, the two routes agree within 0.04 points. All values use the tropical zodiac, seen from Earth.
What the research says
The largest test of sign matches used the 2001 census of England and Wales. The sociologist David Voas checked 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who married whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from errors in data entry. His paper, “Ten million marriages,” came out in 2007. It covered Sun signs. No test of that size exists for Moon signs.
So “disjunct” is not a sentence, and a missing tie is not a missing bond. It is a symbol. A Virgo Moon and an Aquarius Moon share a cool, clear way of handling feelings. The symbols say the link is not given in advance. The couple writes it.
