Virgo and Aquarius compatibility is a strange case. The two Suns have no link at all in the old books. Ptolemy calls signs placed like this “disjunct,” which means they share no bond. Most guides stop there and call the pair hard work.
We went one step further. Virgo is ruled by Mercury, the planet of speech and thought. So we looked at where each partner’s Mercury sits. The result is a surprise. In about 1 Virgo and Aquarius couple in 3, the two Mercury signs form a trine, the easy angle of four signs. For two people picked at random, that happens in 1 pair in 6. So the Suns do not meet, but the minds get twice the usual chance.
This guide shows each step, so you can check it. Read it as a lens, not a forecast. Astrology is not a science, and no study has shown that a sign predicts how a couple will do.
The short answer, in six lines
| Question | What we found. |
|---|---|
| How common is a Virgo and Aquarius couple? | About 1 random US couple in 71. |
| How far apart are the signs? | Five signs, or 150 degrees, a link called a quincunx. |
| What did Ptolemy call the pair? | Disjunct: two signs with no bond, in both ways of reading him. |
| How many couples have their two Mercury signs in a trine? | In 35.5 percent of couples, about 1 in 3. |
| And for two random people? | In 16.7 percent of pairs, or 1 in 6. |
| Did real marriages favor or avoid the pair? | Neither: the gap was 0.1 percent, well inside chance. |
How many couples are Virgo and Aquarius?
Your Sun sign is the slice of sky the Sun stood in when you were born. Each slice is 30 degrees wide. Virgo season runs from about August 23 to September 22. Aquarius season runs from about January 20 to February 18. The exact hour moves a bit each year. Our guide to the zodiac signs checks each border date against the real sky.
The twelve signs do not get the same share of births. Two things set the count. The first is how long the Sun stays in each sign. The second is how many babies are born per day in that part of the year.
Virgo wins on both. The Sun moves slowly in late summer, so it lingers. And US births peak in August and September. Aquarius loses on both. The Earth is closest to the Sun in early January, so the Sun moves fast then. And US births are low in winter.
| Source of the births | Share born Virgo | Share born Aquarius | Chance a random couple is Virgo and Aquarius. |
|---|---|---|---|
| US births 2000 to 2014, 62.2 million, by exact date | 8.94 percent | 7.93 percent | 1.42 percent, or 1 in 71. |
| US births 1994 to 2003, 39.7 million, by exact date | 8.89 percent | 7.93 percent | 1.41 percent, or 1 in 71. |
| If all twelve signs were equal | 8.33 percent | 8.33 percent | 1.39 percent, or 1 in 72. |
Why times two? A couple can be a Virgo woman with an Aquarius man, or the other way round. Both count. So the chance is two times the Virgo share times the Aquarius share.
There are 78 ways to pair the twelve signs. Twelve pairs join a sign with itself. The other 66 join two different signs. Virgo and Aquarius come 27th of 78, just above the middle. The most common pair is Leo and Virgo, at 1 couple in 62. A big sign meets a small one here, and the two effects nearly cancel out. That is a fact about the calendar, not about love.
What ten million marriages showed
A birth count tells you how common a pair is. It does not tell you if the pair works. The best test we know of comes from Britain.
In 2007, the sociologist David Voas looked at every married couple in the 2001 census of England and Wales. That was 10.3 million couples, with the birth date of both partners. He asked a plain question. Do some sign pairs marry more than chance would predict? Do others marry less?
His answer was no. The one clear excess was couples of the same sign. He traced it to form errors, such as one birthday typed in for both partners. Once he took those out, the table matched chance. His paper is called “Ten million marriages: a test of astrological love signs.” The Skeptical Inquirer printed a version in March 2008.
We pulled the Virgo and Aquarius cells from his cleaned table, Table 7. The expected count is what you get if people chose partners with no regard to sign.
| Couples in the 2001 census | Found | Expected by chance | Gap. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Virgo wife, Aquarius husband | 65,499 couples | 65,259 couples | 0.4 percent more. |
| Aquarius wife, Virgo husband | 64,947 couples | 65,369 couples | 0.6 percent fewer. |
| Both ways together | 130,446 couples | 130,629 couples | 0.1 percent fewer, about 180 couples. |
So the lack of a bond did not keep these two apart. One order came out a bit high, and the other a bit low. Together they land almost on the line. The fair reading is simple. Virgo and Aquarius marry each other at the rate the calendar brings them together.
Five signs apart: the quincunx
Place the twelve signs on a wheel. Count from Virgo to Aquarius and you pass Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Capricorn. That makes five steps, or 150 degrees. An aspect is an angle between two points in a chart that astrologers read as a link. The 150 degree angle is called a quincunx, from the Latin for five twelfths. Some books call it an inconjunct, which means not joined.
Modern writers read the quincunx as two parts of a life that run on different fuel. It is not a fight, like the square. It is not an easy flow, like the trine. It asks for a working deal between two ways of doing things.
But a quincunx by sign is not always a quincunx by degree. A Virgo Sun can sit anywhere from 0 to 30 degrees of Virgo. The same goes for an Aquarius Sun. So the real gap between the two Suns runs from about 120 to about 180 degrees. The leeway astrologers allow around an exact angle is called the orb.
| How close the two Suns are to 150 degrees | Share of couples. |
|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees | About 19 percent, or 1 couple in 5. |
| Within 6 degrees | About 36 percent, or 1 couple in 3. |
| Within 8 degrees | About 46 percent, just under half. |
| Within 10 degrees | About 56 percent, just over half. |
These shares are the same for every sign pair on this site. They come from geometry, not from these two signs. Our page on Cancer and Aquarius compatibility runs the same test on another quincunx.
Here is a rule of thumb for your own couple. Count the days from the Virgo birthday forward to the Aquarius birthday, and ignore the year. We timed the Sun’s trip from each degree of Virgo to the same degree of Aquarius, for every year from 1990 to 2030. It takes 149.5 days on average, and never less than 148.9 or more than 150.2. So if your count lands near 150 days, give or take 3, your Suns form a close quincunx. A Virgo born on September 1 and an Aquarius born on January 28 fit well.
What Ptolemy said: two signs with no bond
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapters 13 to 16, he lists the ways two signs can be tied. Many web pages get these wrong, so we read them in the Robbins translation.
First come the four aspects: the opposition, the trine, the square and the sextile. A gap of five signs is not one of them. Then come two special ties. Signs that “command and obey” sit the same distance from an equinox. Signs that “behold” each other sit the same distance from a solstice, so their days last the same length.
Chapter 16 names the rest. Ptolemy calls them “disjunct” and “alien.” These are signs with none of the ties above, and they are one or five signs apart. He says signs five apart “divide the whole circle into unequal parts.” The true aspects cut it into equal parts.
So we checked the two special ties for this pair, in both ways of reading them.
| Tie in Ptolemy | Read sign by sign | Read degree by degree. |
|---|---|---|
| Command and obey | Virgo pairs with Scorpio, and Aquarius with Gemini | Virgo mirrors Libra, and Aquarius mirrors Taurus. |
| Behold each other | Virgo pairs with Taurus, and Aquarius with Sagittarius | Virgo mirrors Aries, and Aquarius mirrors Scorpio. |
The sign by sign lists come from the notes in the Robbins edition. The degree by degree reading is the one William Lilly uses for his mirror points, in Christian Astrology, from 1647. Some pairs change partners between the two readings. This one does not. Virgo and Aquarius share no tie in either reading. They are disjunct, full stop. Modern writers such as Chris Brennan call this state aversion: two signs that cannot see each other.
Lilly has one simpler list. He calls the six signs from Aries to Virgo commanding and the six from Libra to Pisces obeying. On that list, Virgo commands and Aquarius obeys. Take it as an old label for the sky, not a rule for who leads at home.
Mercury: the planet with a seat in both signs
Here is where the pair stops being strangers. In the old books, a planet can hold rank in a sign in five ways. The two big ranks are the house, a sign the planet rules, and the exaltation, a sign where it is honored. The three small ranks are the triplicity, the term and the face. The triplicity is a share in ruling a whole element. A term is an uneven slice of a sign, and a face is a ten degree slice.
Lilly prints all five in his table of dignities. We read the Virgo and Aquarius lines, and the ruler of each sign in the other.
| Planet | Rank in Virgo | Rank in Aquarius. |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury, ruler of Virgo | House and exaltation, plus a term and a face | Triplicity by night, a term from 6 to 12 degrees, and a face from 10 to 20 degrees. |
| Saturn, ruler of Aquarius | No major rank, only a term from 18 to 24 degrees | House, triplicity by day, and a term from 0 to 6 degrees. |
So the tie runs mostly one way. Mercury holds three small seats in Aquarius. Ptolemy gives the air signs, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, to Saturn by day and to Mercury by night, in Book 1, chapter 18. Saturn holds only one small seat in Virgo, a term. Virgo is the only sign where one planet holds both big ranks, and that planet is Mercury. So Mercury is the natural thread to follow for this pair.
Aquarius has two rulers today. Saturn is the old one. Uranus was found in 1781 and added later. Our Aquarius sign guide covers both. This page uses Saturn, since it carries the whole written tradition.
Where each partner’s Mercury can sit
Mercury never strays far from the Sun. Seen from Earth, it stays within about 28 degrees of it. So your Mercury sign is your Sun sign or one of the two signs next to it.
For a Virgo, that means Leo, Virgo or Libra. For an Aquarius, it means Capricorn, Aquarius or Pisces. The two lists never overlap. So a Virgo and an Aquarius can never share a Mercury sign. That much is known. What we wanted was the split inside each list.
We measured it over 800 years, from 1600 to 2400. A short window can mislead, since Mercury’s loops repeat on cycles of several years. We took the Sun and Mercury every three hours and kept the moments when the Sun was in Virgo or in Aquarius.
| Mercury sign | Share of Virgo natives | Share of Aquarius natives. |
|---|---|---|
| The sign before the Sun | Leo, 14.1 percent | Capricorn, 32.9 percent. |
| The same sign as the Sun | Virgo, 49.5 percent | Aquarius, 52.8 percent. |
| The sign after the Sun | Libra, 36.4 percent | Pisces, 14.3 percent. |
The Virgo figure matches our Virgo sign guide, which found Mercury at home for half of all Virgos. Look at the tilt, though. The Virgo’s Mercury leans forward, into Libra. The Aquarius’s Mercury leans back, into Capricorn. The reason is Mercury’s lopsided orbit. Its swings away from the Sun are not the same size in every season. With the Sun in Virgo, Mercury runs ahead of the Sun 63 percent of the time and can get 27 degrees ahead, but only 19 degrees behind. With the Sun in Aquarius, it is the other way round. Mercury runs behind 61 percent of the time and can fall 27 degrees back.
Seen from the other side, our page on Mercury in Virgo finds that only half of the people born with it are Virgo Suns.
The Mercury trine: 1 couple in 3
Now pair the partners. Each Virgo Mercury sign meets each Aquarius Mercury sign. Nine mixes are possible, and each one forms an angle by sign. We multiplied the shares, since the two births are not linked.
| Angle between the two Mercury signs | Which mixes give it | Share of couples. |
|---|---|---|
| Trine, four signs apart | Virgo with Capricorn, and Libra with Aquarius | 35.5 percent, about 1 in 3. |
| Opposition, six signs apart | Leo with Aquarius, and Virgo with Pisces | 14.5 percent, about 1 in 7. |
| Square, three signs apart | Libra with Capricorn | 12.0 percent, about 1 in 8. |
| Quincunx, five signs apart | The four other mixes | 38.0 percent, about 2 in 5. |
Two people picked at random have a Mercury trine by sign in 2 cases out of 12, or 16.7 percent. Virgo and Aquarius couples have it in 35.5 percent. That is more than twice the usual rate. The two big mixes do the work. A Virgo with Mercury in Virgo meets an Aquarius with Mercury in Capricorn, two earth signs. Or a Virgo with Mercury in Libra meets an Aquarius with Mercury in Aquarius, two air signs.
A trine by sign is not always a trine by degree. So we measured the real angle between the two Mercury points as well.
| Mercury points within this orb of 120 degrees | Virgo and Aquarius couples | Two random people. |
|---|---|---|
| Within 3 degrees | 7.7 percent | 3.3 percent. |
| Within 6 degrees | 15.2 percent, about 1 in 7 | 6.7 percent, about 1 in 15. |
| Within 8 degrees | 20.1 percent, about 1 in 5 | 8.9 percent, about 1 in 11. |
The edge holds at every orb. It is about 2.3 times the random rate. The two Mercury points never come closer than 69 degrees, so they never meet in a conjunction or a sextile.
What does a Mercury trine mean? In the tradition, Mercury rules speech, study, trade and daily plans. A trine is read as ease. So the classic reading is two people who follow each other’s train of thought. Keep the scale in mind, though. Two thirds of these couples do not have it. And a trine is a symbol, not a promise.
Venus and Saturn: the other threads
Venus is the planet astrology ties to love and taste. It stays within about 47 degrees of the Sun. So a Virgo has Venus in Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra or Scorpio. An Aquarius has Venus in Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces or Aries. Those lists never overlap either. We ran the same count. The two Venus signs form a trine in 24.3 percent of couples and an opposition in 19.0 percent. They form no aspect at all in 37.8 percent.
Virgo holds a twist here. It is the sign of Venus’s fall, a place where the old books call her weak. About 23.5 percent of Virgo natives have Venus in Virgo. On the other side, 29.3 percent of Aquarius natives have Venus in Pisces, her exaltation. For how each mix plays out, see our page on Venus sign compatibility for Virgo and Aquarius.
Saturn moves too slowly to follow the Sun. It spends about two and a half years in each sign. So an Aquarius partner has no special chance of Saturn in Aquarius, and a Virgo has no special chance of Saturn in Virgo. Saturn links the pair only through the calendar of birth years, not through the Sun signs.
What the pair can look like day to day
Here is how astrologers read the pair. These are symbols, not a forecast. Any real person will fit some parts and not others.
Virgo is an earth sign and a mutable one. Earth stands for things you can touch and use. Mutable means the sign falls at the end of a season and adapts. So Virgo is read as the sign that fixes, sorts and improves. Aquarius is an air sign and a fixed one. Air stands for ideas and links between people. Fixed means the sign sits in the heart of a season and holds its course. So Aquarius is read as the sign that keeps to a principle.
They differ in element and in mode at once. That is why the old books see no bond. The Virgo partner asks “does this work, down to the detail?” The Aquarius partner asks “is this fair, for everyone?” Both are good questions. They just start from different ends.
They share more than it looks. Both signs are human in form in Ptolemy’s scheme: Virgo is a maiden and Aquarius a man with a water jar. Both are dry in the old sense, more given to thought than to storms of feeling. And Mercury, as we saw, has a seat in both. So a row between them is more likely a debate than a flood.
Stephen Arroyo, in his book on the four elements, reads earth as the urge to make things real and air as the urge to link ideas. A couple that names this can trade on it. The Aquarius partner brings the plan for the future. The Virgo partner brings the steps to reach it. Some plain habits help any couple with this mix. Say changes out loud and early. Leave room for time with friends. Agree on which details matter, and let the rest go.
The rest of the chart counts for more
A Sun sign is one point out of many. The Moon moves through a whole sign in about two and a half days. The rising sign changes about every two hours. Two people with the same Sun signs can have very different charts.
This page shows the point well. The Suns share no bond, yet the Mercury signs form a trine in 1 couple in 3. A full reading lays one chart over the other. Astrologers call that method synastry. For another pair with the same rulers and the same gap, see our page on Gemini and Capricorn compatibility.
How we measured
For the share of births, we used the daily US birth counts from the Social Security Administration for 2000 to 2014. That is 62.2 million births, published by FiveThirtyEight. We checked it against the National Center for Health Statistics file for 1994 to 2003. Each day was split by the exact hour the Sun crossed into a new sign, in Central time.
For Mercury and Venus, we used the astronomy engine library. We took the Sun, Mercury and Venus every three hours from 1600 to 2400, in the tropical zodiac. We kept the moments with the Sun in Virgo or in Aquarius and counted the sign of each planet. We ran it again every five hours with a shifted start, and got the same shares to the first decimal.
As a second, separate check, we pulled daily places for the Sun and Mercury from JPL Horizons, the NASA service, for the same 800 years. It gave the same Mercury shares and the same 35.5 percent trine rate. The degree orbs matched to the first decimal.
The census counts are from Table 7 of the Voas paper. Ptolemy is quoted from the Robbins translation, Book 1, chapters 13 to 18. Lilly’s houses, terms and faces come from his table of essential dignities.
Questions people ask
Are Virgo and Aquarius compatible?
No study has found that Sun signs predict how a couple does. The largest test, 10.3 million marriages in England and Wales, found Virgo and Aquarius couples 0.1 percent under chance. As a symbol, the pair joins earth and air, five signs apart, with no bond in Ptolemy.
What percentage of couples are Virgo and Aquarius?
About 1.42 percent of random US pairings, or 1 in 71. That is based on 62.2 million US births from 2000 to 2014. It ranks 27th of the 78 sign pairs.
What aspect do Virgo and Aquarius make?
The signs sit five apart, or 150 degrees, an angle called a quincunx or inconjunct. Ptolemy calls such signs disjunct. By degree, the two Suns form a close quincunx in about 1 couple in 3, using a 6 degree leeway.
Why does Mercury matter for this pair?
Mercury rules Virgo and is exalted there. In Aquarius, it holds three small ranks: a night share of the air signs, a term and a face. Saturn, ruler of Aquarius, holds only a term in Virgo.
What share of Virgo and Aquarius couples have a Mercury trine?
In about 35.5 percent of couples by sign, or 1 in 3. Two random people have it in 16.7 percent of cases. Within a 6 degree leeway, the rate is 15.2 percent, against 6.7 percent for random pairs.
