Taurus Moon and Aquarius Moon compatibility starts with a hard angle. The two signs sit three places apart on the zodiac wheel. Astrologers call that a square, and they read it as friction. Yet the oldest rule book in the trade gives this square a softer name. Ptolemy called signs placed like these “commanding” and “obeying.” That is a tie, not a clash.

Why a square reads as friction
Count from Taurus to Aquarius around the wheel and you pass three signs. That makes a square, an angle of 90 degrees. In the old books, a square is a hard link. The two signs share no element and no gender. Taurus is an earth sign, cool and practical. Aquarius is an air sign, social and abstract.
Yet they share one trait. Both are fixed signs. Fixed signs sit in the middle of a season, when the weather has settled. Astrologers read them as steady and slow to change. So this is a square between two people who both dig in. Neither one moves first by habit.
Our data table marks this mix as unique. Of all 78 Moon pairs, this is the only square between an earth sign and an air sign that are both fixed. Three other squares join two fixed signs, but each one mixes a different pair of elements.
Ptolemy’s chain of command
Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in the second century. In Book 1, chapter 14, he says that signs the same distance from an equinox sign “command” and “obey.” His reason is that they rise in equal times and sit on equal parallels. The sign in the half of the year with long days commands. The sign in the short-day half obeys.
Measured in degrees from the spring equinox point, Taurus and Aquarius are mirror twins. Taurus runs from 30 to 60 degrees past that point. Aquarius runs from 30 to 60 degrees before it. There is a second reading. A note in the Robbins translation pairs whole signs by counting from Aries itself. That puts Taurus with Pisces and Aquarius with Gemini. By that count, the pair has no tie at all.
We give you both, since the text supports both. Only two squares make the degree list: this one, and Leo and Scorpio. Each of them keeps its friction, but gains a bond of rank. For a Moon pair, you can read the label as a hint about who sets the pace at home. It is a symbol, not a rule.
How close is the square, in real degrees?
A square by sign is not always a square by degree. Each sign spans 30 degrees. If one Moon sits at 2 degrees Taurus and the other at 28 degrees Aquarius, the gap is 64 degrees. That is closer to a sextile, a 60-degree link, than to a square.
Astrologers allow some leeway around the exact angle. They call it the orb. So we asked what share of these couples form a square within a given orb. The Moon moves fast and fills each sign evenly, so the answer comes from simple geometry. Our long count of real positions gave the same result.

These figures hold for every pair of different Moon signs. They are not special to Taurus and Aquarius. Still, they change how you should read the label. At a common orb of 8 degrees, fewer than half of these couples have the square the sign names promise.
There is a twist at the edges. In about 7 couples in 100, the two Moons form a different major angle within 8 degrees. An early Taurus Moon and a late Aquarius Moon can make a sextile. A late Taurus Moon and an early Aquarius Moon can make a trine, the 120-degree link read as the easiest of all. So a few “square” couples have a soft angle by degree.
Lilly’s mirror points
William Lilly wrote Christian Astrology in 1647. He used mirror points called antiscia and contra-antiscia. A contra-antiscion is the point that mirrors a degree across the line from Aries to Libra. For Taurus and Aquarius, two degrees mirror each other when they add up to 30. So 10 degrees Taurus mirrors 20 degrees Aquarius.
Lilly read contra-antiscia as hard, like a square or an opposition. How many couples have their two Moons on such mirror points? Within 1 degree, about 6.6 couples in 100 do. Within 3 degrees, 19 in 100 do. For those couples, the old rules stack two hard links on top of the tie of rank.
The Moon’s rank in each sign
Tradition gives each planet signs where it is strong or weak. These ranks are called dignities. Ptolemy and Lilly agree on the Moon’s list. It rules Cancer, which is its home. It is exalted in Taurus, which means honored, like a guest of state. It is weak in Capricorn, across from its home, and in Scorpio, its fall.
So the Taurus partner has the Moon in one of its two best seats. The Aquarius partner has the Moon with no major rank. The Moon is a plain traveler there. Old texts call that peregrine, which means foreign. Lilly also lists small shares called faces, ten degrees each. The Moon holds one face in each of these two signs, the middle ten of Taurus and the last ten of Aquarius.
Rank speaks to how easily the Moon does its job in a chart. It says nothing about which partner is kinder. An Aquarius Moon is not a weak person.
The sign rulers add one more layer. Venus rules Taurus. Saturn rules Aquarius. In chart reading, the ruler of the Moon’s sign colors how the Moon acts. So the Taurus Moon answers to Venus, the planet of pleasure. The Aquarius Moon answers to Saturn, the planet of limits and structure. One seeks what feels good. The other seeks what holds up. Both can build a home, but on different plans.
New moon and full moon births in this pair
Here the two signs do differ, and the gap is real. Some people are born with the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. That is a birth near the new moon. Others are born with the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun. That is a birth near the full moon.
The share depends on the season. The Sun moves slowest in early July and fastest in early January. So it spends about 31 days in Taurus but only about 29.6 in Aquarius. A longer stay gives the Moon more time to pass through the same sign as the Sun.

So a Taurus Moon leans a little toward new moon births. An Aquarius Moon leans a little toward full moon births, since the Sun lingers in Leo. Can you trust your Moon pair?
The Moon moves fast. It spends about 54.6 hours in each sign on average, and anywhere from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. It changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. On those days, a birth date gives two possible Moon signs.
Free tools fill the gap with a guess. They set the birth time to noon. Across all moments from 1600 to 2400, that guess gives the wrong Moon sign 10.98 percent of the time. For this pair, both Moons are safe without a birth time in about 31 couples in 100. That happens when each partner was born on a day with no sign change. Everyone else should check the clock. A Taurus Moon born late in the day can turn out to be a Gemini Moon. An Aquarius Moon born early can turn out to be a Capricorn Moon.
How we counted
Every figure here comes from one table of 78 Moon pairs, built for this site. It covers every moment from 1600 to 2400, in the tropical zodiac, as seen from the Earth. Two separate routes built it. The first used the Astronomy Engine library. It found each Moon sign change to a tenth of a second and added up the exact time spent in each sign. The second used the Swiss Ephemeris, with a regular hourly grid set half an hour apart from the first. No random draws were used.
The two routes agree within 0.05 points on every figure. That check also sets a limit. The twelve Moon signs each hold between 8.331 and 8.336 percent of all time. The gap between signs is smaller than the gap between routes. So we do not rank Moon pairs by rarity. Any two different Moon signs meet in about 1 couple in 72, and two Moons in the same sign meet in about 1 couple in 144.
What the evidence says about love signs
The best test of sign matching used the Sun, not the Moon. In 2007 the sociologist David Voas studied the 2001 census of England and Wales. He looked at about 10.3 million married couples. He found no link between Sun signs and who marries whom. A small excess of same-sign couples came from data entry errors.
No census records birth times, so no one can run that test on Moons. Treat this pair as a lens for talk, not as a verdict on your future.
Living with the square
If you share this pair, the old reading gives you a few plain prompts.
Name the need under the habit. The Taurus partner wants comfort that can be touched and kept. The Aquarius partner wants space to think before it feels. Neither need is wrong.
Build routines with gaps in them. A fixed weekly dinner can suit the Taurus Moon. A night off for friends can suit the Aquarius Moon. Both are fixed signs, so both keep a routine once they agree to it.
Decide who leads on what. Ptolemy’s label puts Taurus in the lead. Real couples split the lead by topic. Talk about which one of you holds the home and which one holds the plans.
Check the degrees. If your two Moons are more than 10 degrees from an exact square, the friction the books describe is weak by their own rules.
