Leo Moon and Aquarius Moon Compatibility: The Line That Splits the Sun’s Half From the Moon’s

Leo Moon and Aquarius Moon compatibility joins two signs that face each other across the zodiac wheel. Leo is the one house of the Sun. Aquarius is a house of Saturn, set straight across from it. So each partner has a Moon on one side of the same axis.

That axis has a second meaning. In the oldest map of the signs, it is the line that splits the Sun’s half of the zodiac from the Moon’s half. We also measured a sky fact that ties the two Moons to one Sun sign. This page explains the old rules, the numbers, and how we got them.

The short version

Question Answer.
What link do the signs form? An opposition, six signs or 180 degrees apart.
What did Ptolemy call it? An aspect on one straight line, and not a gentle one.
Elements and modes? Fire and air, both fixed.
Who rules each sign? The Sun rules Leo, Saturn rules Aquarius.
Rank of each Moon? No rank in either sign.
What did we measure? Both Moons are likeliest with a Leo Sun.

First, what astrology is not

Astrology is not a science. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple will do. The largest test of love signs came from the sociologist David Voas in 2007. He used the 2001 census of England and Wales, with 10.3 million married couples. He found no effect of Sun signs on who marries whom.

A census holds no birth times, so no one can run that test on Moon signs. Read this page as a map of old ideas and real sky facts. It is there to start a talk, not to grade your couple.

The line between two halves

Ptolemy wrote the Tetrabiblos in Alexandria around 150 AD. In Book 1, chapter 17, he hands out the signs to the planets. He starts with the lights. The Sun gets Leo and the Moon gets Cancer, the two signs of high summer.

Then he cuts the zodiac in two. The half from Leo to Capricorn belongs to the Sun. The half from Aquarius to Cancer belongs to the Moon. Each of the five planets gets one sign in each half.

Now look at this couple. Leo is the first sign of the Sun’s half. Aquarius is the first sign of the Moon’s half. The two Moons sit at the two starting points, one on each side of the cut.

Saturn gets the last seat in the scheme. Ptolemy calls it cold, slow and farthest from the lights. So it takes the signs opposite them: Capricorn, facing Cancer, and Aquarius, facing Leo. He adds a reason in plain words. The aspect across the wheel, he writes, “is not consistent with beneficence.”

That is the old picture of Leo and Aquarius. It is the Sun’s own sign set against the sign of the planet that stands for cold, limits and distance. Our page on Leo Venus and Aquarius Venus compatibility reads the same axis through Venus.

Two Moons with no rank

Old astrology rates how well a planet works in each sign. The Moon owns Cancer and is honored in Taurus. It is in exile in Capricorn and in fall in Scorpio. Leo and Aquarius are on none of these lists.

William Lilly, in Christian Astrology in 1647, used the word peregrine for a planet with no rank in its sign. It means a traveler with no house of its own in town. A peregrine Moon is not weak. It leans on the planet that owns the sign.

So the Leo Moon takes its cue from the Sun. Our guide to the Moon in Leo calls it a need for a witness. The Aquarius Moon takes its cue from Saturn, the old ruler, and from Uranus in modern charts. Our guide to the Moon in Aquarius shows how many people get that sign wrong.

Neither Moon has a rank, good or bad. The contrast comes from the rulers. One Moon answers to the brightest light. The other answers to the planet set farthest from it.

An aspect on one straight line

In Book 1, chapter 13, Ptolemy names four links between signs. The first is the opposition, six signs apart. He says its reason is “immediately obvious,” since it puts the signs on one straight line.

He then sorts the four. The trine and the sextile are harmonious. The square and the opposition are not. His reason is that they join signs of opposite kinds. That reason fits the square well, but it is odd here, since Leo and Aquarius are both masculine signs. Ptolemy still lists every opposition with the hard aspects.

He had two other bonds. Some signs command and others obey. Some signs see each other. These can be counted by exact degree, the way Lilly read them, or by whole signs, as in the notes of the translator Frank Robbins. On both readings, Leo and Aquarius share neither bond. Their one link is the opposition itself.

Modern astrology reads the opposition as a mirror. Each partner sees in the other what they lack. It is a pull and a push at once. Both views are worth knowing, and neither one is a verdict.

Fire meets air

The element of a sign sets the tone of the Moon in it. Leo is fire: warm, quick and open. Aquarius is air: cool, curious and detached. In the old scheme, both are masculine signs.

The Leo Moon shows love up close. It wants eye contact, praise and a sense of being the one. It feels safe when it is chosen in public.

The Aquarius Moon shows love at some distance. It gives space, loyalty and honest talk. It feels safe when it is free to be odd and to have its own friends.

Here is where the two can miss each other. The Leo Moon reads the Aquarius Moon’s calm as a lack of care. The Aquarius Moon reads the Leo Moon’s need for focus as a claim on its freedom. Both are loyal. They show it in opposite ways.

Two fixed signs

Leo and Aquarius are both fixed signs, the ones that hold on once they have chosen. Among the 78 Moon pairs, this is the only opposition between fire and air that joins two fixed signs.

Fixed Moons are steady. They keep a mood, a view and a person for a long time. That makes this pair loyal. It also makes it slow to bend. When the two disagree, neither one likes to move first.

What we measured: one Sun for both Moons

Here is the sky fact on this page. A person born near a new moon has the Moon in the same sign as the Sun. A person born near a full moon has the Moon in the sign opposite the Sun. For this couple, those two cases point to the same Sun signs.

Moon sign New moon type, Sun in the same sign Full moon type, Sun in the opposite sign.
Leo Moon 8.43 percent, with a Leo Sun 7.96 percent, with an Aquarius Sun.
Aquarius Moon 7.97 percent, with an Aquarius Sun 8.43 percent, with a Leo Sun.

Read the table across. A Leo Moon with a Leo Sun, and an Aquarius Moon with a Leo Sun, both come out at 8.43 percent. A Leo Moon with an Aquarius Sun, and an Aquarius Moon with an Aquarius Sun, both sit near 7.96 percent. In both signs, the Moon is likelier with a Leo Sun.

The cause is the Earth’s orbit. The Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July, so the Sun moves slowest in the northern summer. It spends more days in Leo than in Aquarius. More days with the Sun in Leo means more new moons in Leo and more full moons in Aquarius.

For the couple, the two leans cancel out. 15.73 percent of couples include at least one partner born with the Moon in their own Sun sign. 15.72 percent include at least one partner born near a full moon. The two figures are the same within a hundredth of a point.

In the old reading, a full moon birth puts the self and the needs on opposite sides of this same axis. An Aquarius Moon born near a full moon has a Leo Sun. So that partner carries the whole Leo and Aquarius axis inside one chart. Our guide to moon phase compatibility shows how to find your own phase.

Opposite by Sun, ordinary by Moon

Through the Sun, Leo and Aquarius is a well known pair. Our page on Leo and Aquarius Sun sign compatibility checks how many of those couples are truly opposite in degrees.

The Moon does not favor any pair. It spends close to the same time in every sign, between 8.33 and 8.34 percent. Any mixed Moon pair comes out at about 1 couple in 72. So a Leo and Aquarius Moon couple is as common as any other mixed pair.

How close are the two Moons in degrees?

An angle by sign is not always exact in degrees. Astrologers allow a margin around the exact angle, called an orb. The Moon moves at a near even pace through each sign, so plain geometry gives the share of couples inside each orb.

Orb allowed Couples with a true 180 degree angle.
Within 3 degrees 19 percent of couples.
Within 6 degrees 36 percent of couples.
Within 8 degrees 46 percent of couples.
Within 10 degrees 56 percent of couples.

These shares hold for every Moon pair, so they are geometry, not a trait of this one. At the edges, the angle slides toward 150 degrees, the quincunx. That is not one of Ptolemy’s four aspects. So unlike some pairs, this one gains no second major aspect across the sign line. At an 8 degree orb, a bit more than half of Leo and Aquarius Moon couples are opposite by sign only.

Check both Moons first

A reading needs two correct Moon signs. The Moon stays in a sign for 54.6 hours on average, from 46.9 to 61.1 hours. It changes sign on 43.92 percent of all days. A birth on such a day has two possible Moons.

Tools with no birth time use noon. That guess gives the wrong Moon sign in 10.98 percent of charts. For a couple, it gives the wrong pair in about 1 case in 5. Only 31 percent of couples have both Moons fixed by their dates alone. Our pivot page on Moon sign compatibility gives the full count.

A Leo Moon born on a change day can turn out to be a Cancer or a Virgo Moon. An Aquarius Moon can be a Capricorn or a Pisces Moon. Any of those shifts turns this opposition into a different angle. The birth time settles it.

Three talks worth having

  • How close is close? The Leo Moon wants focus and time together. The Aquarius Moon wants room and time with friends. Agree on a rhythm, and name it.
  • How do you show you care? The Leo Moon wants warm words and praise. The Aquarius Moon shows care through honesty and loyalty. Learn to read both signals.
  • Who moves first? Both Moons are fixed and hold their ground. Take turns being the one who bends, and keep count kindly.

How we measured

We used two separate routes over the years 1600 to 2400, with all moments weighted the same. Route one used the astronomy-engine library. It found every sign change of the Moon and the Sun to within a tenth of a second, then added up the exact time in each case. Route two used the Swiss Ephemeris and checked the sky once an hour, on a grid shifted by half an hour. The two routes agree to within 0.05 points, and they give the same new moon and full moon shares.

The noon test uses calendar days in Greenwich time, with a chart at 12:00. For the old rules, we read the Tetrabiblos, Book 1, chapters 13 to 17, in the Robbins translation, and Lilly’s Christian Astrology.

Frequently asked questions

Are a Leo Moon and an Aquarius Moon compatible?

Astrology reads them as opposite Moons, a warm fire Moon facing a cool air Moon, both fixed. One wants closeness, the other wants room. No study has shown that Moon signs predict how a couple does, so use the reading as a lens.

What did Ptolemy say about Leo and Aquarius?

He gave Leo to the Sun and Aquarius to Saturn, across from it. He wrote that this aspect across the wheel is not consistent with beneficence. He also put Leo at the start of the Sun’s half and Aquarius at the start of the Moon’s half.

Is the Moon weak in Leo or in Aquarius?

No. The Moon has no rank in either sign, which tradition calls peregrine. It leans on the ruler of the sign, the Sun for Leo and Saturn for Aquarius.

Why are both Moons likelier with a Leo Sun?

The Sun moves slowest in the northern summer, so it lingers in Leo. That gives more new moons in Leo and more full moons in Aquarius. Both come out at 8.43 percent.

Can I find my Moon sign from my birth date?

On 56 percent of days, yes, since the Moon stays in one sign all day. On the other days, you need a birth time. A noon guess is wrong in about 1 chart in 9.
